F-101B Voodoo

Album image #1
Revell’s F-101B. It’s the 1/72 version of Monogram’s 1/48 F-101B so decent detail.

Album image #2
I found this photo of the original. Should have studied it a bit more, discovered only near the end of the build that more backdating was required like removing antenna’s aft of canopy and the intake on the lower left nose (which I already installed)

Album image #3
Removing the prominent “slime lights” for backdating. Of course I ground away a little too much so needed filler to repair...

Album image #4
First subassemblies and first paint on. Installed nosewheel well without the nose gear, which would never survive the build otherwise.

Album image #5
Cockpit installed. First signs of trouble with the overall fit. Not much guidance on location of instrument panels, ground away thick instrument panel shrouds and inside fuselage to make panels fit. Added rear wall to nose wheel well.

Album image #6
Fuselage assembly. Fit not too bad but did end up with more steps at the joint than wished for.

Album image #7
Sprayed intake halves and flap interior white. Did not compare references and kit parts good enough, discovered too late the guide vane is sitting too far inboard (apart from being far too thick). Should have replaced it.

Album image #8
Backseaters radar scope was too small, replaced it. Installed fwd instrument panel shroud. Test fitting seats.

Album image #9
Intake installation. Had a hard time getting a decent fit.

Album image #10
Main wheel wells were not completely walled, so added missing walls and hydraulic lines. Didn’t realise that the half rib halfway in the well was part of parts 45/46.

Album image #11
Painted main wheel wells, installing upper wings.

Album image #12
Intake splitter plates and too-far-back-and-inboard guide vanes. Oh well...

Album image #13
Fit al the lower side not too great so quite a bit of filling and sanding was needed. Not falling together as expected. Opened solid front of afterburner cooling intakes.

Album image #14
And wings are on. Achieved a decent wing-to-fuselage fit, with quite some pressure needed to close the gaps. Filled the remaining small gaps. Speed brakes installed closed, lot’s of sink marks on these, filled these with Mr Surfacer and sanded down.

Album image #15
Sprayed the red bits of wheel doors, flaps and Falcon’s. Used paint that was too old, remained annoyingly sticky forever.

Album image #16
Added sight or projector glass to fwd instrument panel coaming.

Album image #17
Installed windscreen and masking of the glassy bits.

Album image #18
Tailplane installation. Again not a very positive fit.

Album image #19
Ready for painting

Album image #20
Black antiglare panel and pre-shading

Album image #21
Sprayed radome and masked black areas, sprayed Aircraft Grey. Showed up a flew flaws that needed sanding and respraying.

Album image #22
Sprayed darker area under nose present on my subject. Saw it on several other F-101B’s reference pics, had to guess size and color of the area. No idea why this area has a different color. Notice bad fit of missile pallet. My goof...

Album image #23
Unmasked black areas and sprayed gloss coat in preparation for decalling.

Album image #24
Decalling in progress, decals hardly react to Micro Sol which doesn’t help.

Album image #25
Decalling complete, comparison with the reference pic showed that Revell didn’t do their homework flawlessly. The stylized bird is too big, some stencils are wrong, matched pic best I could. Weathered with dark gray pastel powder and final satin coat.

Album image #26
Sprayed the bare metal exhaust area last.

Album image #27
Into final assembly.

Album image #28
Added the yellow edging around the canopy and windscreen panels with painted decal sheet. With hindsight should have cut these a bit wider.

Album image #29
Adding gears, tailpipes and missiles. Could not get main gear retraction cylinder installed as designed (story of this kit...) so shortened them.

Album image #30
Installed seats and added blast screen aft of front seat.

Album image #31
And the final bits. Installing the canopy jack was another challenge, could not figure out how Revell had intended this to fit.

Album image #32
Finished!

Album info

An almost out-of-the-box build of Revell's F-101B. Expected this to be an easy build, but it kind of fought me all the way. Fit is so-so, but perhaps that's just me. Did not bother to check accuracy. Still came out looking OK though. Markings in the kit are not fully accurate, the kit also requires a bit of backdating for the USAF marking option.
