Watching. Are you using bare metal foil?
19 December 2018, 03:21
Donald Dickson II
*hands Bryn a beer and plops down to watch* I like the foil/metalizer approach. I am intrigued as to how that will look once discolored.
19 December 2018, 03:37
Florent Thouret
a-seat-thanks.

Nice start mate, those fuel tanks look as good as gold.👍
19 December 2018, 03:46
Kerry COX
Thank you one and all lads. 🙂
Bryn. The only bare metal foil is on the back end of the fuselage that surrounds the engine area. And the odd small access panels. The rest is Testors aluminum buffing metalizer, sprayed directly over bare plastic after discovering the paint will not buff up to polished alloy state if sprayed over a 'base' coat of paint.
19 December 2018, 03:51
Kerry COX
Michael. The tanks originally had a fine coat of Zinc Chromate that I sprayed the buffing alloy over, and it was a total flop when it came to polishing them, so I stripped them back and went with the metalizer straight onto the polished bare plastic and they then turned out just as I wanted. 🙂 👍
19 December 2018, 03:53
Kerry COX
Donald, thankfully, testors have the 'burned metal' buffing paint and that is a gentle gold tinge when used, then with the Tamiya clear acrylics thinned out to barely any colour at all, I should be able to get the blue/purple you see that these 100's are famous for. 😉 I uploaded an image of the discolouration I am wanting to replicate.

Watching for the technique plus who doesn't love a super sabre.

Michael Phillips
Ooooh, I gotta watch this! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the heat stressing, which is THE super cool feature of this aircraft!
19 December 2018, 05:43
Kerry COX
Mr Phillips. You and me both. !
That was the one thing that had me by the short and curly's when I first saw the back end of this beast and I wondered what was the cause and how to replicate the effect. 🙂
There have been many attempts, but sadly, most have missed the mark.................close enough is near enough thinking really. 🙁
But as I am using bare metal foil in that area, I will be able to 'work' up to the effect I am looking for, as the paint will be easily managed because the foil will give me the ability to be more flexible with little or no damage when 'correcting' my efforts. 👍
19 December 2018, 06:02
Maciej Bellos
Following closely. Eager to see the heat stressing.
19 December 2018, 06:55

Maciej. Me too mate. hehehehehe 🙂

Bryn Crandell
Good to know that the Testors buffables don't like a primer base coat. Thank you Kerry.
19 December 2018, 12:42
Kerry COX
Bryn. I was hoping that by using the fine dusting of the Yellow green would work with the buffable testors, but it only created a barrier that I could.t overcome when polishing the testors, having to then strip it all back to bare plastic and try again.
End result was a joy to have. 😉
19 December 2018, 13:02
Kerry COX
Hans. Thank you my friend. 🙂
I will take a look at your results for inspiration. 👍
Cheers. 🙂 👍

The purchase of new equipment helps too Martin. Now I have two Iwata 'eclipse' AB's with the twin coupling for the air from the compressor and twin air lines. 🙂
I really feel like a gunslinger now. hahahahaha 🙂

Konrad -
Wow that is just awesome Kerry! One question because I'm not aware of this technique. How do you fix the foil on the kit?? Super Glue??
19 December 2018, 20:36
Kerry COX
Konrad. The foil is a product from "Bare Metal Foil." It comes in all kinds of metal finis. Like chrome, matt, gold or most steel textures with an adhesive on one side and you cut out what you need, usually enough to cover a pre determined spot you may want to cover, then, once in place, 'burnish' the foil. Meaning that you rub it pretty hard with a cotton bud or if you wear a cotton glove, the foil will then be pushed into all the fine rivet or panel line detail. I will get some links for you to look at. 👍 google.com.au/url?sa..Hr4xaRg_l9O35RPXacgQ

Kerry COX
James and Bobbins, Hi guys. 👍
At the moment I am waiting for the filler to totally dry on the obvious seam lines on the nose and intake before I get the sanding done, being careful to keep as much surface detail as possible.🙂
So far, all is going well and according to what history is telling me on it's looks. 👍
20 December 2018, 05:56
Erik Leijdens
Inspiring Kerry! I have a Charlie in the stash and maybe I will try to copy your work 🙂

Geeze Kez you had me for a minute on the decal sheet until I read your comment below the pic!
20 December 2018, 09:35
Kerry COX
Konrad. It really is an exciting medium to work with. 👍
It take a bit of time and quite a bit of foil to work out just how it behaves.🙂
'Compound curves' are something it will resist. But practice makes perfect I hear. hahahahaha 🙂
20 December 2018, 10:23
Kerry COX
Peter. What did I concern you with. ??? The shark teeth. ? ha. Knowing how much you hate them, I can understand why. 😉
20 December 2018, 10:26

Thanks mate I think I have the perfect project for this technique a F104 A ... 😉

Konrad. What a perfect choice. 👍
I will certainly have my eye on that one. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Nose intakes are as bad as side intakes when it comes to gaps and ridges. I have yet to have a single one that lined up just right. I have found that F.O.D. covers are our friends. LOL

I have an A-7D project in the wings that I think Peter will get a kick out of...

Clifford Keesler
Looking awesome Kerry.
29 December 2018, 03:45
Kerry COX
Hey Clifford. 🙂
Happy New Year buddy. 🙂
I am still tossing around the thought that I may have to repaint the discolored metal again, which is easy really, as it is all acrylic and just needs the wipe of a rag soaked with mentholated spirits and start again. I would love to get it exact really, and as it's no big drama to do the wipe and paint, I have a lot of lee way available and hopefully get better results.
29 December 2018, 04:59
Kerry COX
Hans. something I just can't do is. 'Settle for second best'.
I strive for getting it right, and that may not be all that easy, but here, while I have easy options, I will play with it a bit and see what I can produce. But I add, all while having fun and enjoying it. 😉
29 December 2018, 10:15
Bart Goesaert
Nearly missed this one. Nice work so far. Painting burned metal is easier said then done...
29 December 2018, 10:54
Kerry COX
Bart. Hi buddy, and Happy New Year. 😉 👍
Having the bare metal foil as the base to work on, it is less drama to keep trying to get it right, as the mistakes or failures can be simply wiped away and a bit of a rub and try again. 🙂
And that applies to the two paint types, being the enamel or acrylic, so I am just going to persist until I come up with the best combination for the best effect.👍
Something you just couldn't do if you were working with plastic surface.
So, I truck on and on. hehehee🙂
Cheers. (t)
29 December 2018, 12:39
Kerry COX
JC. Perfect mate. 👍
I have found that the bare metal foil on the rear fuselage is the ducks nuts mate. 🙂
It lets you 'play' with the discoloration of the titanium the F-100 is famous for. 🙂
The decals are a treat too, softening beautifully to go down as well as you want. 👍
Let us know when your starting your build. 🙂
Cheers mate.
Kez. 👍
29 December 2018, 19:15
Clifford Keesler
I know you will get it right. I have 3 Monogram 100's, I have never tried the bare metal foil. I will have to try it as I have yet to build a Hun that I have been happy with the rear fuselage area. So I will watch your progress with interest Happy New Year to you also sir.
30 December 2018, 03:28
Kerry COX
Cliford. I have buggered up 2 100's now, and all due to failing to get the rear fuselage colours right. 🙁
But with the two airbrushes and a wealth of experience with them, I have had a wee bit of a breakthrough. 🙂
Hopefully, what I do now will inspire you to attempt at least one of your brood. 🙂
30 December 2018, 04:56
Gordon Sørensen
It is amazing how much one can learn from watching other mates builds... I have a couple of F-100s in the stash I have been putting off specificly because I didn't know how to deal with the rear fuselage...
30 December 2018, 05:13
Kerry COX
Gordon. Get yourself some 'Bright Chrome' bare metal foil and have fun. 👍
Don't try and put the whole side on in one go, but keep the pieces you need to apply the same size as the small panels that goes to make up the whole rear fuselage section. 🙂
Just like the real thing, panel by panel. 👍
Have fun. 👍
As I am having a ball. 🙂 🙂 🙂
30 December 2018, 05:44
Clifford Keesler
Are you doing the whole aircraft in Bare Metal foil or just the aft fuselage?
30 December 2018, 21:07
Augie
Ohhhoo Kezza's on the tools again! wheres my seat?

That exhaust is looking very tasty
30 December 2018, 21:45
Kerry COX
Augie. ! 🙂
G'day cheer leader. 👍 🙂
Yes, seeing what I can do again mate. 😉
And Clifford, the only part I am 'foiling' is the rear fuselage section replicating the titanium section. As the rest will all be aluminnimum plate buffing metalizer by Testors. 👍
I thought about the SEA cammo with the green and tan but liked the idea of following the box art and the all metal look.

30 December 2018, 23:05
Clifford Keesler
Sounds good. One of mine will be SEA camo, one the silver laquer they painted the later models in and one will be NMF.
31 December 2018, 04:15
Kerry COX
Clifford. They should look spectacular my friend. ! for sure.
I am tempted to buy some more of them, but I will see how this one behaves and then I shall decide.
👍
31 December 2018, 04:45
Michael Hickey
Looking good Kerry, and I think you'll find this kit goes together like a dream. I really enjoyed building mine just a shame I sold her.
31 December 2018, 07:13
Kerry COX
Thank you my good friends. 🙂
Michael, It is going together with all the ease you mentioned. Detail is superb, and I just hope I can do it justice. 🙂
BTW Michael and Lode. , Happy New Year guys. 🙂 👍
31 December 2018, 12:42
Michael Hickey
Happy New Year to you as well Kerry and everybody else.🙂
1 January 2019, 00:07
Kerry COX
It won't be long now, as I have worked out what I am doing wrong with the 'discolouration' efforts. 😉
1 January 2019, 01:43
Bart Goesaert
Appy new year to you too mate, we will see the new results soon
1 January 2019, 09:48
Kerry COX
The completed F-100 D is not too far away. 😉
1 January 2019, 10:14
Clifford Keesler
Happy New year Kerry, the Hun is looking good.
2 January 2019, 00:12
Kerry COX
Clifford. Thank my friend. 👍
And Happy New Year to you too mate. 🙂
You may think I am nuts, but I keep repainting the titanium section over and over.
As each time I think I have it looking like the images I have down loaded, but I miss something. 🙁
The last attempt, I just sprayed the darkened clear orange, missing the spots where it has that blue hue come through, and I feel I am that little bit closer to the actual look of the colours. 🙂
I would really like to 'get it right'. 😉
2 January 2019, 00:38
Clifford Keesler
I have heard of guys using Clear Orange, Clear Yellow Clear Blue, and a little Smoke, on Tomcat Nozzels. I am sure you will get it right.
2 January 2019, 00:59
Kerry COX
These last two images of my attempts are what I would call, 'Getting closer'. But I am needing feed back from you guys as to what you think too. 👍
2 January 2019, 01:52
Michael Hickey
For what it's worth I'd use clear blue to tone down the bronze look, but you also have to remember that each individual aircraft has her own unique coloring so what you come up with no one can tell you that it is wrong. Remember to enjoy the journey and to have fun and don't get bogged down on trying to get this one section 100% perfect, just my two cents.🙂👍
2 January 2019, 05:30
Kerry COX
Michael. 👍 🙂
Words of wisdom my friend. 👍
I have used the clear orange, darkened with a drop of black, making it a richer metalic look, and when spraying, I have left a small area where the blue hue was visible in the images and placed the small patches of the clear blue where the bronze was not sprayed, and these are the last two images I posted of that result. 👍
And Michael, it has been a real hoot for me to keep trying for a better result, as there has been no damage done in this whole process, because the foil has enabled me to use just acrylics that lets me just swipe a metho dipped rag across what I had done and, try again. 🙂
The most fun I have had in a while actually. hehehehehe 🙂 🙂 🙂

2 January 2019, 06:35
Bart Goesaert
When comparing to the pictures, I miss the brilliant blue sheen, but also the places where the heat didn't affect the metal so much. Some zones are global, some are more confined to the panels on their own...
2 January 2019, 08:54
Kerry COX
I have been going about it the wrong way and I feel that the next lot of images of what I have done will answer my problem, that being, I am too broad in my application of the bronze, rather than being narrow and exact as to keep the silver base visible along the rivet lines, and then the clear blue as it is seen on top of the narrow bands of the dark yellow/bronze, inside that set of rivet lines.
More chilli I think. hahahahaha 🙂 👍.
2 January 2019, 11:16
Kerry COX
The last two images of the tail will be. "The last two". 👍
I am as close to it as I can possibly get.
3 January 2019, 23:12
Ben M
That's great
3 January 2019, 23:59
Augie
It does look good kezza, I think you have the right balance for a NMF airframe, I suspect on SEA camo "huns" the blue effect was predominantly due to pain remnant
4 January 2019, 00:14
Spanjaard
the perfectionist master attacks again... great look on those metals kezza. great to see you back in the saddle
4 January 2019, 00:26
Clifford Keesler
Excellent kezza.
4 January 2019, 00:33
Donald Dickson II
My thoughts. The coloration varies so widely as to defy any attempt to draw a pattern. BUT, while some of the NMF planes had some bluing, it does seem more of the painted ones had it. At least in so far as I have seen in pics. And I am FAR from an expert. Either way, it does seem that that happened to minority of the planes. Most of the ones I have ever seen pics of have the base as you have applied it. So really, it is totally how you want it to look.

Alclad makes a violet heated metal color. Its what I intend to use along with their blue heated metal color. Perhaps something to consider if you cant work out what you like with the stuff you have.
4 January 2019, 01:27
Kerry COX
Good Lord. ! Thank you all for your most valued info and thoughts and ideas and observations, I am most grateful. 👍
Augie.
Spanjaard.
Clifford.
And Donald.
As it has been put forward about the cammo versions and those of them being the most used and abused of the F-100's, I must admit it has been that rugged look I have been trying to achieve, and now that the whole model has had so much 'handling', I am now thinking of going the whole green/tan/kaki SEA paint scheme, as that I feel will really compliment the titanium section better than the over all bare metal look. 👍
I am really pleased there are so many of you who have been following my efforts, but especially, those of you who have the knowledge and are happy and willing to help me not make a goose of myself. 😉
Now for the silly putty. 🙂 hehehehehe
Kez. 😉
4 January 2019, 03:57
Peter Hardy
A goose Kez? I don't think so.
4 January 2019, 07:17
Kerry COX
It happens from time to time Peter. 😉
4 January 2019, 07:38
Peter Hardy
Never at my place Kez!
4 January 2019, 09:59
Donald Dickson II
Kerry, this is what I love about this group of folks. If you or Augie or Spanjaard or Peter etc etc has a criticism or different approach, you all make it in such a way as to NOT be butt munches about it.

I intend on doing this scheme with the Monogram kit. Gotta find a different one to do the SEA version. Either wya you go with it, I am quite sure it will be outstanding.
4 January 2019, 23:21
Peter Hardy
One thing about putting a heat signature on metal is there a few ways of doing it and I bet a couple more undiscovered yet too. One of the things I love about Kezza's approach is he will try a new way someone suggested or thought of himself despite the last one he did being close to what he was after. Love the bloke, love his attitude and love what he produces!
4 January 2019, 23:54
Holger Kranich
Very nice so far, Kezza! And on the last pic, only the burnt blue is missing. We have a F-100 still in service here to work as a target tow aircraft for the Jagdgeschwader 71 Richthofen. Its painted in all-over white. But the afterburner dont shows the typical burnt and peel off paint. Maybe they paint the aircraft every two days...😉 😄
5 January 2019, 05:55
Kerry COX
Holger. Now you mention the missing burned blue. I have to tell you that it is the globe in my desk lamp that gives you, me and everyone else the impression it is not blue.
So, what I will do is put it in natural light, snap some shots and you will see that the blue is very obvious. 🙂
This is why I am not doing it again, as at this stage, I am really happy with the 'effect' I have achieved.
🙂 🙂 🙂
5 January 2019, 08:40
Holger Kranich
Aha, its just a question of light? So please accept my apologies, my dear!😢😉😉

Is it still so unbelievable hot in Aussie-Land?
5 January 2019, 08:49
Michael Hickey
Sorry Kerry, my mate in the Blue Mtns said it was 41 degrees today, but here in Sandy Beach it was a cool 29 degrees.🙂
5 January 2019, 09:51
Kerry COX
Michael. 🙂 Good to know your doing OK at Coffs. 😉
We are hoping for cooler days and nights, but that is like asking for a miracle. hehehehehe 🙂
Happy New Year mate. 🙂 Take care. 👍
5 January 2019, 09:57
Michael Hickey
Happy New Year to you as well mate, and don't worry my favorite season is only 7 weeks away, it'll fly bye.
5 January 2019, 10:03
Kerry COX
ONLY. ? I wish it was a lot cooler too mate. 🙂
5 January 2019, 12:50
Michael Hickey
I wonder how poor Peter is coping.🤔
5 January 2019, 14:41
Clifford Keesler
Looks great Kerry, looking forward to the finished model. It was a balmy 50%F here in Saint Louis today. LOL.
5 January 2019, 23:07
Maciej Bellos
It is a chilly -6 C here in Central Greece. It was snowing for two days. Nice heat stressing. Looking forward for the finished Hun.
5 January 2019, 23:38
Kerry COX
Good to know the world wide weather reports lads. 🙂
As for the Hun. I will be starting the finishing off today, prepping for the paint and masking off.
Then the P-38. ! Zoom. 👍
The last four images were taken in sunlight.
I would be pushing it if I think I can improve on the colour, as all I need now is the surface texture to be a little dull (less sheen) to give the overall appearance of fatigued metal.
6 January 2019, 00:47
Augie
For the sheen kezza, the vallejo matt acrylic varnish works well?
6 January 2019, 01:31
Kerry COX
Augie. 👍
Brilliant my amigo. 🙂
I will order some tomorrow and post the results. 😉
Cheers and thanks heaps for the good word. 🙂
Kez. 👍

Augie
Most welcome buddy, I find it manages to knock the shine off most things 🙂
6 January 2019, 01:39
Donald Dickson II
Its the official around the world weather thread! LOL It is 45 F and raining here in south central Pennsylvania. 😄

As for the secondary point of this thread, some model plane or another.😉 Cant wait to see the end results!
6 January 2019, 02:27
Kerry COX
I am like a woman. :-O
Instead of the SEA I was contemplating, I am sticking with the polished aluminum by Testors. 🙂
As now I am dulling down the titanium, it will look like the ones of the images I have downloaded from the various 'walk around's' I have found, and with my second Super Sabre, it will be the SEA paint job, just to break the monotony. LOL 🙂
6 January 2019, 05:00
Kerry COX
And for tomorrow. 😉
\ It will be pissing down and cooling the place off. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. 🙂 🙂
6 January 2019, 05:01

Maciej, Thank you my friend. 🙂
I had a lot of fun, and I really think it will look good, sitting beside all my other 'Century Series' aircraft in my display case. 🙂 👍
Now, on with the P-38. 🙂
8 January 2019, 20:43
Michael Phillips
Well, now, that sure did turn out nice! Well done Kerry, the heat stressing looks very convincing. Congrats!
8 January 2019, 20:49

Michael. 🙂 I am really tickled pink by the way it's turned out. 🙂
Now that the other colours are involved, the heat stressing seems to have blended in well. 👍
Worthy of being on a comp table this year. ? hehehehe 🙂

Gentlemen, gentlemen. 😉
I thank you all for your comments and accolades. 👍
I had serious doubts for a while and I wondered if I still had it in me to keep at my hobby.
But now I have finished this little beast, I am much happier to keep on with what keeps me humming along. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I am so glad it turned out OK. 👍
🙂
8 January 2019, 23:43

Album info

Using only Testors buffing metalizer 'Aluminium plate' and small amounts of Bare metal foil, I am wanting to replicate one that has seen some service.
