Aichi D3A1 Val

Made a proper start over "twixtmas" - bit of priming, bit of paint, bit of glue here and there. Have raided the spares collection for a rear-mount gun and bomblets for the outboard wing positions...

The cockpit was completely bare (thanks, 1965 Airfix!). Seats are all wrong and pilots look like Biggles, but ignored the seats and tried to de-emphasise the handlebar moustaches on the "Japanese" crew. Then hit the spares collection again to add some "interest" in the cockpit, scratch building my take on the signature telescopic sight for the rear position with sprue and some photo-etch, ditto an aft-bulkhead. Stuck some PE seatbelts vaguely on the crew too, and have tried to give a hint of aotake under the interior green paint. Most will be hard to see when all sealed up (although it's an open cockpit), so it's all a bit "greeble" really.

Oooh, some of these decals are right fiddly so-and-so's.

Great looking cockpit detail! I like to add a bit of scratchbuilt detail to my old Airfix kits, too, although in reality little to none will probably ever be seen!

Yep, sadly sealed it all up last night with the canopy too. I know it's there though 😉

Album info

Trying to make something vaguely presentable out of the venerable Airfix kit (pretty box notwithstanding, it's a 1965 moulding, so 7 years older than even me!).
