Album info

One of the most famous Airacober's was named "Wahl's Eye / Pat" and took part in the fiercest aerial battles in the defence of Port Moresby harbour. Its toothy mouth resembled the jaws of a deep ocean fish rather than the usual shark's mouth. The blue propeller cone, blue SOP top and white number on the keel were the standard markings of the Airacober 39th FS. The aircraft was piloted by Lt. Eugene Wahl, who, along with several other airmen from the home 35th FG, was sent to New Guinea in mid-May for a tour of duty with the 8th FG and credited with shooting down a Zero there on May 26. Luck did not desert him on 9 June when, after a dogfight with Zeros of Tainan Kōkūtai fame, he had to make an emergency landing, but after several days of marching through the jungle he was able to rejoin his unit. He then flew combat sorties with that unit until late July, when the 39th FS was withdrawn to Australia for reorganization and rearmament with the more powerful P-38 Lightning.
