Revell 1/48 P-51D Mustang "Big Beautiful Doll"
Restored P-51D painted as Col. Landers’ plane.
Lacquer basecoat to help the acrylics stick to the plastic.
Still need a lot of practice with this airbrush
Seat armor Vallejo earth brown and black drybrushed with medium grey. Seat is Model Master green zinc chromate with the cushion/chute in Vallejo yellow green.
Drybrushed white, details picked out with Vallejo white, medium grey, and red.
Vallejo acrylics
Coat of Tamiya flat and then a drop of Mr. Clear gloss in each dial.
AK Interactive chipping fluid for the cockpit floor wear.
It’s a shame how much of it is hidden.
Got the main pieces together. Now for putty, and lots of it.
It also becomes obvious why the new wonderkits are better than this old 1977 mold. Nearly everything is misaligned. Here you can see that the whole fuselage appears “squished” to the left. It’s verified when looking tail-on: the left sidewall is mostly vertical whereas the right is slanted inward. I also made the mistake of trusting the location pins to align things properly.
And when asssmbled, the noseplate is angled. In fairness, I should have caught this, but it’s a good example. Can’t take anything for granted on these kits!

Thanks Ethan. It's neat how much potential this old kit has with some TLC.

Yeah they defiantly require some work but you can get a pretty good looking model from some of them.
I'm very impressed with how well you did the instrument panel, are those decals or did you drybrush it?

Thank you. It's drybrushed with Vallejo white. Used an old, stiff Floquil brush I had from my teenage years.
I'll probably try a drop of gloss in each instrument dial.

The painting effect of the instrument panel is excellent, comparable to that of etched sheets.

Thanks Robin. I'm surprised what this old kit can do with just paint and some very basic skills. And honestly the result is more satisfying than buying the same result with aftermarket.
