1/35 scale? it is just a weird scale for a WWII aircraft kit. no, odd for all military aircraft kit. Who would park the completed kit side by side with other 1/32 kits? It will look incorrect.

Masking tape removed - an extremely saisfying part. Well, a tiny bit of overspray on the underwing pylons, but it's all ...

While waiting for some paints to arrive in the mail to continue my MiG-23 build project, I decided to do a very quick build of the Eduard L-39 in my stash. This kit is labeled as a "weekend" build, which might be a bit optimistic for me, but should still be a quick progress.

Do you already have a plan for the shades you're going to use? I found the L-39 classic camouflage very hard to get right. I hope you'll have more luck with it.

For the Hungarian standard camo, MRP has released an entire set, consisting of MRP-351 Brown, MRP-352 Dark Green and MRP-353 Light Blue.

Yesterday I spent some time comparing the hue and tint of the MRP paints with my own mix of Tamiya acrylics (as described in photo 26 above), and found them to be absolutely identical. I also found the MRP paints much too smelly and aggressive and hard to adjust if you want to blend in slightly varying tones in panels etc. The Tamiyas can furthermore be used for extremely diluted thin filter applications, while the MRP are block solid.

![](/profiles/img/111505-470-s.jpg)
Well done on those paints!
I agree with you, Tamiya paints spray great and don't smell nearly as nasty as MRP's.

Very nice painting job, Thomas. Looks fantastic so far 👍
I recently saw that Edward has released the transparent parts of this kit as "L-39 Revised Canopy":
L-39 Revised Canopy (Eduard 7040Y, 1:72)
Do you know what problem the original transparent parts have?
24 July, 17:49
![](/profiles/img/57594-145-s.jpg)
Cuajete, thank you! No, I wasn't aware of any issues with the canopy. To me, the version provided in the kit is good enough, it certainly looks correct compared with photos.
24 July, 19:53
![](/profiles/img/25743-467-s.jpg)
I'm not sure, but the kit photos show onle the multi part canopy. The revised Canopy kit also has a single peace closed version.
25 July, 04:27
![](/profiles/img/57594-145-s.jpg)
Nicolas, yes, you are right. With the new set you also get a closed canopy so the builder doesn't have to join the separate pieces together. I guess it makes for a simpler build.

@ Cuajete: I tried it direktly from Thomas' albums. There it works, but ther is a notice that comments are blocked.

After a health problem, I stopped modelling for a short time. I didn't want to continue the projects I had started because I wasn't in the mood for scratch modelling. I wanted to make a quick project - almost oob. Of course with a wooden propeller, because building one is just fun.
Working on two Pfalz D.IIIa (one as a triplane conversion) a long time ago was great fun and there was still a special kit waiting in my stash: a Limited Edition Dual Combo Pfalz D.III. No, I haven't forgotten the "a", this really is the forerunner of the D.IIIa. Eduard has re-released the D.IIIa kit often, but this Edition is from 2005 and was never released again. I hear some voices: Limited Editions are for collecting, not building. Never mind, I'm building the kit now!
I'm building the machine from the cover picture - and because there's a heart on it, I'm dedicating the build to my wife, who always supports me!

Excellent to see you Frank!! I can't wait to follow along with this. Which is sure to be another beautiful build. Any edition…Limited, or otherwise sounds like something to build to me!! But maybe I'm doing things wrong. Ha!!

Looks like an interesting project Frank. I must admit that I don't know much about WWI aircraft and your builds are often a lesson about the real machines as well as a lesson in modelling.

Thank you very much mates! Great to know that you are following 👍
Yeah Kyle, all kits can be build. But some collects rare kits as investment and hope to sell it later for higher prices. Once started the value goes near zero. But we have fun building them and that is invaluable!
@gorby You will see later that the Pfalz fighters are elegant planes!

![](/profiles/img/108061-170-s.jpg)
Indeed. I take a great pleasure in opening up and building valuable kits. I would be a really horrible collector. Lol.

I have a few rare ones. But I'll gladly build them when the time comes. That's what kits are for!

I hope to have it ready for our next club meeting, so it will be a quick build (for my standards).

Good to see you back at the bench. I consider the Pfalz DIII one of the most elegant WWI planes and have two in my stash too. So I won't miss this build.
Keep it coming.

![](/profiles/img/69549-161-s.jpg)
I'm also glad you're back on the bench. I really enjoy watching you build models.
... by the way... I really like to buy Eduard limited edition models. They include lots of extras and often a publication with photos and information about the type whose model is in the box. I still have some of the limited edition models in my closet. Not because I just collect them, but because I haven't managed to build them yet. 🙂

I'm sorry to hear that you had a health scare, and hope that all is okay again for you. Your projects are always inspiring and a joy to follow. Have fun bringing this special one to life 🙂

Thank you very much mates! Your nice comments are highly appreciated!
I hope to show later new pictures showing the elegant lines even more.
@Ludvik Since this is an older kit in this case not a single word about the type! Only a ink jet printed manual, and one colorful, nicely printed sheet showing the six markings including decal placement. Anyway, the kit parts and PE are nice, a mask is also included.
@Bruce Ageing is not for cowards! But at least the fun is back with this project so I made also good progress.

Thank you for all your kind words. With the excellent paints like AK Xtreme, MRP Super Silver and Mr Color Metallic II (thinned with rapid thinner), it is easy to do. For me this is easier (and faster) than a convincing painted camouflage pattern. Appreciate all the feedback 👍
26 July, 15:15
![](/profiles/img/118183-835-s.jpg)
Thanks for the details on your finishes. I still use Alclad but it's finicky of course. I may try the rapid thinner trick, I have heard it works well and your build is proof. Do you still use Alclads for the heat stains (blue, etc.)?
26 July, 15:51
![](/profiles/img/144427-499-s.jpg)
It has been a while back but I am pretty sure on the CF-104 on the tail, just in front of the exhaust area there is a base of AK Pale burnt metal and the weathering was done with Tamiya Weathering master set B&D, which is easily wiped clean with water if overdone. (See attached stash)
For the Super Sabre exhaust area (see other album/project) I used Pale burnt metal as a base followed by light vertical airbrush passes of Tamiya Clear Red, Yellow and Blue (in that order -X27,24,23), although sparingly as in 1956 the airframes were rather new. Hope this helps.
26 July, 16:53
![](/profiles/img/118183-835-s.jpg)
Rob, thank you! That is very helpful. I haven't really tried much of the Weathering Master sets. I have the snow/soot/rust one but didn't really like it (there being better ways to do soot & snow, IMO). Haven't done any super rusty exhausts lately but I can see how it would work for that. I also see the utility for doing heat stains, being able to wipe it off and start over is a major bonus.
