I've been saying that I've been working on repairing/upgrading my Tintin model collection. I'm not quite finished (still 2-3 on the workbench), but I wanted to take a few pics of the new display now that it's coming together. I'm going to take some close-up pics once I finish off the last few.

Thanks guys! I used to have my Tintin collection in an IKEA glass display case, but it outgrew it (and adding extra shelves was partly to blame for having one fall and crush several of the models below it, and damage some of the other ones). At the moment, the only projects that are still "ghosts" (i.e. no figures) are:

- The BMW motorcycle and side-car (Soviets)
- the wooden canoe (Broken Ear)
- the ZIL limo and Land Rover (Picaros)

The Armoured car (Red Sea Sharks) requires no driver to be seen, but I did try to stick a small Tintin face (just eyes really) peeking out of the Bordurian tank (Calculus Affair), but I gave up... and even though I think I could get a prop motor in, I'm at a total loss as to how to insert a pilot into the Beechcraft Bonanza... I may have to redo that one eventually. I'm already planning on redoing the DHC Chipmunk (upgrade from the old Airfix kit to the nice AZModel kit that Robert sent me), so what's one more, right?

At the moment, on the workbench, I've got:
- The Mil-3 Helicopter (now with a spinning rotor and a pilot climbing in) (Picaros)
- The yellow Opel Olympia (Otokar's Sceptre), just waiting for a new 3D printed motorcycle to chase it.
- My yellow Tiger Moth (Black Island). This one bugs me... some of the struts broke and I seem to have lost them... do I just steal the needed parts from my other box, or do I rebuild it? Haven't decided, so it's still sitting.

As for new projects... I'm currently working on my Model T (Congo), but trying to decide if I want to include the little train as I first planned or just stick with the car itself. I've also got a half started Red Rackham pirate ship (using the HMS Bounty as a base for a kitbash). And LucLuke B - I've got a Soleil Royal kit that I plan to turn into the Unicorn! Oh, and currently in the 3D model building stage... the Carreidas 160 (Flight 714).

So, I think I'm gonna need a bigger shelf... 😉

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll have to update my Tintin shelf pictures soon. The Hawker Hart project I just posted was number 48, and I've got number 49 on the workbench underway... but I feel like I should do something special for Tintin Project 50. I've got some plans for some truly monumental projects... including the moon rocket, the Unicorn ship and Marlinspike Hall itself, but I'm not quite ready to tackle any of those. I have 3 thoughts in mind... I wonder which one I'll pick... 🙂

First print mostly successful. I will need to rework the thickness of the walls and the support struts for the roof. Much too thin.

3d printing, I wouldn't know where to start. Is the ami 6 a file you found online?

I did find it online, but was a little disappointed with the quality. It required a lot (and will need more) work to be able to print it. I mainly have to increase the thickness of the rear trunk area. The strange overhang roof in the rear needs to be sturdier as well.

The second printing went much better. I made a mistake though, I forgot to add the support to both sides of the rear roof struts. Luckily one side seems to be strong enough to hold everything, and with a little paint I don't think the thin part will be visible.

Good timing. After a bit of a summer break spent watching football, olympics, and playing video games with my son... I just started back at the modelling desk. After clearing up a couple of other, smaller, Tintin-related projects, I'm almost ready to tackle this one again.

With the Hawker Hart off the bench and on the shelf… I guess it's time to tackle this one again. Getting the colour right was tricky. I finally settled on a 10:5:1 ratio of Tamiya XF-2 White, X-14 Sky Blue and XF-18 Medium Blue. Not perfect, but close enough I think.

DuperScale, how about scribing into a layer of primer paint?
This way, scribing should be a lot easier afaik, scribing into the primer layer of paing, and not plastic.
This guy on youtube did this, on regular plastic models though.

As for the clear parts, I wonder if it could be done this way
1) Cut out a square/rectangle shape, removing the oval form from windows. The larger the hole the better, to create some extra space around the old window shape. Enough space to work with putty later on.
2) Glue in a flat thin strip of transparent styrene on inside of model.
3) Glue in a square/rectangle shape transparent styrene, outside the model, laminated with the existing strip of transparent styrene on inside, so double layered.

If keeping the new window parts larger than the old window shape it should be easier to use some putty after adding masking tape that have the shape of the old windows. The larger these new outer square/rectangle window shapes are, the easier it is to add putty to create a smooth surface, then hopefully the center part is clear enough, to mask off the final shape of the old window shape, before painting.

Afaik a common issue using Mikro Kristal Klear is that you can't sand the clear part afterwards, because the clear part is like rubber iirc. You can iirc easily remove this clear part though, just poke/pull it out. Unsure if there would be any residue left after removing the rubber like liquid clear stuff after it dries.

Another thing one could do with clear parts an idea:
1) Glue in a long strip of transparent styrene on inside of plane.
2) Add some kind of epoxy or something that can be sanded, without the epoxy damaging the underlying transparent styrene.
3) Idea is to use the liquid stuff to fill in the perfectly shaped holes for the windows, then sand the liquid stuff flush after it dries.

What won't work imo, is doing multiple rounds of adding liquids to create some goo that goes transparent. I think if you sand this stuff multiple times adding more liquid stuff, you get a flawed result I think. I tried something like that with gloss varnish, trying to build up a solid clear shape. Did not work as expected.

In this thread, and in photo #13, the guy apparently put tape outside, and poured clear resin on the inside to fill the window holes. Unsure if such resin will react and maybe eat up or warp any thin parts ala vacuum kits. I guess this can be tested with some scrap plastic if having some piece left over.

The UV transparent resin is usually sandable (to some degree), maybe that might help?
Similarly to Treehugger I'd reinforce it with a transparent styrene from the inside of the fuselage anyway.
Or you might leave the windows open and fill them with Kristal Klear after painting - this is what I did on my Jetstream, Avanti & Yak-40. But if you want to seal it with gloss varnish, remember to keep very thin layers (guess how I learned it 🙂).

Hi, thanks for the input mates. I'm quite happy with the kristal clear on the small windows and i think i do it like Lukasz said. After everything is done i do the windows as the last step.

The windscreen window could work but i think i used little to much of the kristal clear.
