Airfix Focke-Wulf Fw190D-9
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/1/8/8/41188-10189-26-pristine.jpg)
Went together well, some sheet styrene added to manage gaps around gun cowl
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/1/8/9/41189-10189-14-pristine.jpg)
First coat of RLM02 to check for surface defects. Need to pour some black into the cockpit...
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/1/9/0/41190-10189-86-pristine.jpg)
Gap around gun cowl looks good enough, the air scoop took a bit of filling and sanding
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/1/9/1/41191-10189-18-pristine.jpg)
Wing seams on the underside needed some rework...
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/1/9/2/41192-10189-80-pristine.jpg)
Fit around the wing-to-fuselage joints is poor
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/1/9/3/41193-10189-22-pristine.jpg)
I resisted the temptation to rescribe the whole thing 🙂
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/1/9/4/41194-10189-96-pristine.jpg)
Crude by todays standards, but I love these old kits
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/1/9/5/41195-10189-23-pristine.jpg)
More sanding...
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/1/9/6/41196-10189-33-pristine.jpg)
Looks okay now, ready for pre-shading
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/1/9/7/41197-10189-19-pristine.jpg)
Still need to make the canopy fit, some careful use of a file might do
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/1/9/8/41198-10189-96-pristine.jpg)
Crappy pre-shading job. Tried a new water-soluble brand, next time I better stick to what I am used to
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/1/9/9/41199-10189-88-pristine.jpg)
Pre-highlighting to come next...
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/7/6/41276-10189-34-pristine.jpg)
RLM76 added...
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/7/7/41277-10189-61-pristine.jpg)
RLM76 added...
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/2/7/8/41278-10189-20-pristine.jpg)
Pre-shading looks good so far.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/7/9/41279-10189-97-pristine.jpg)
Maybe still a bit too uniform, will add a lighter shade of RLM76 later
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/1/8/9/42189-10189-62-pristine.jpg)
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/1/9/0/42190-10189-61-pristine.jpg)
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/4/0/1/42401-10189-14-720.jpg)
RLM82 - Fugly green!
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/4/0/2/42402-10189-20-720.jpg)
Paint job is okay, but I begin to regret that I did nothing about that canopy...
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/4/5/8/42458-10189-53-720.jpg)
Starboard grey mottle needs a bit of touch-up, exhaust stains are next
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/7/4/9/42749-10189-26-720.jpg)
A bit of touch-up here and there, tails and rudder (76/83) added
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/5/0/42750-10189-37-720.jpg)
Area below canopy needed some more touch-up.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/5/1/42751-10189-11-720.jpg)
Looks good now, coat of Future is next before decaling and weathering
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/8/3/6/42836-10189-23-720.jpg)
Masking is Tamiya tape and Humbrol Maskol. Look at that gap at the rear...
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/8/3/7/42837-10189-89-720.jpg)
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/1/4/0/51140-10189-70-720.jpg)
Temporarily assembled with white glue for club meeting...weathering, exhaust stains, clear coat still missing.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/1/4/1/51141-10189-35-720.jpg)
Disassembled again...
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/1/4/2/51142-10189-21-720.jpg)
Didn't like the gap at the rear of the canopy - needs to be filled, so a shim was added...
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/1/4/3/51143-10189-88-720.jpg)
The best fit I could get out of it. A chunk of the canopy broke out when it was removed from the sprue, still visible. Hard to sand w/o ruining the clear part of the edge of the frame. I'll fill that with paint.
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/1/4/4/51144-10189-38-720.jpg)
I love those Luftwaffe red trim tabs with the "nicht anfassen" stencils. They add some 'life' to the model.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/1/4/5/51145-10189-22-720.jpg)
The green looks weird with gloss cote (Future) on. Going to look different with clear cote (I hope)
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/1/4/6/51146-10189-64-720.jpg)
Canopy shim sanded and paint touched up.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/1/4/7/51147-10189-97-720.jpg)
Canopy fits snugly now.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/0/5/8/56058-10189-53-720.jpg)
Matt coat added - as expected, the green looks so much better now.
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/0/5/9/56059-10189-87-720.jpg)
Exhaust stains were done with Tamiya smoke, then I picked up a bit here and there with a tooth pick wetted with alcohol
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/0/6/0/56060-10189-36-720.jpg)
Experimented a bit with 'weathered and worn' exhaust stains, a tad overdone
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/0/6/1/56061-10189-77-720.jpg)
Tamiya smoke picked up with a short-bristled brush moistened with alcohol.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/0/6/2/56062-10189-21-720.jpg)
Came out quite nice overall. I'll work it over with pastel chalks later...
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/0/6/3/56063-10189-14-720.jpg)
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/0/6/4/56064-10189-99-720.jpg)
Rudder was done in RLM76/RLM83. Rudder leading edge was rounded and given more 'depth' with Tamiya smoke
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/0/6/5/56065-10189-86-720.jpg)
Gun barrels to be added from cut-down syringe needles
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/0/6/6/56066-10189-67-720.jpg)
Looks like a Fw190D-9 to me. Forgot to flatten the tail wheel...
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/0/6/7/56067-10189-18-720.jpg)
Not bad for a mid-70s Airfix kit. Oh, where are the antennas?
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/0/6/8/56068-10189-32-720.jpg)
Can't wait to tackle a Tamiya Fw190D-9 for comparison.
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/0/6/9/56069-10189-20-720.jpg)
So far, so good.

Right, the only 'challenges' were fit of the lower wing half to the fuselage, the canopy, and the left horizontal tail because the root stub was only partially molded (you can see it in the first image). Nothing that can't be fixed 🙂

RLM75 top color and mottling added, next will be RLM82 Medium Green.

Great airbrush control... is not easy to get correct shape and size on 1/72

Thanks, Adrian. I was lazy and did the mottle with my Aztek instead of rigging my more capable EFBE airbrush. I was suprised how well it worked, now that I am back to Model Master enamel colors 🙂
Can't wait to get home today and tackle the next color!

Looking at the last image I'd say RLM81(83 is much more pleasing ot the eye than RLM75/82 😉

Baseline camo touch-up finished, Future is next before decaling and weathering

Decals are on. Decided to fix a gap at the rear of the canopy pretty late in the process. Next is exhaust stains, post shading with Tamiya smoke, clear coat, pastel chalks (in that order)

Pedestrain progress, too much office work. Exhaust stains and flat coat are on.

Danke, Jens.
