Whew! I ordered one of the RV kits. I think I do have an Academy kit in the stash though...now what to do with it? 🙂
Regarding the Hasegawa kit, I built one of those when it first came out, and I remembering it being the first kit I built that didn't require any filler.

@ Bill, you must make an review of the RV kit latter. The Hasegawa kit is much much better, you can see the 23 build about 30 years ago near the Academy 27.

Hey Vitor, I just pulled out my copy of the Academy MiG-23 which I bought way back when it first came out. I just had to see for myself how bad it was. But I was quite surprised - the intakes on my kit seem to fit together just fine. What could have happened to yours to make that horrible fit of the intakes? Granted, yours is a 27 and mine a 23, but aren't the kit intakes the same? I can post some photos of mine taped together if anyone wants to see.

Bill the 23 and the 27 dont share the same parts! If you look carefully you will see that the intakes are different, i also have that one (the 23) build and the fit is "much" better than the 27 that was "adapted" from the one that you got. You must get the 27 to try it and understand the differences between them. Feel free to post the pics.

I've taped the major components of the 1:72 Academy MiG-23 together as best I could. The parts actually fit together better than these photos show, the tape just isn't holding things tightly. But I think you can see that it's not so bad. I would guess that not much filler would be necessary.

My kit is the Minicraft boxing - it's made by Academy, but I wonder if it's any different.

Thank you for your pictures, i just found that i get the worst one (kit)! In fact the parts are different, the ones that i used on my kit are not the same that you have there! The Minicraft boxing have better parts! At least 3 are different, if you look to the squares in the air intakes you are going to see that those squares are perfect, now look to the ones i used on the Mig-27 and you will see that they are not perfect like the ones you show, the other is the top fuselage part, if you look at it you will see that the air scoops are opened, i had to open this one because they were almost 95% closed.

Well good to know that that one is a better kit.

From what I can tell then (based on what you found in your box Bill), the original molds would be the Hasegawa/Minicraft, later boxed by Academy/Minicraft(with the prominent Korean characters, as Bill's kit shows). These molds were then slightly re-tooled by Academy and released when they went on their own in the 1990's, which could account for the worse fit of the Academy boxings compared to the original Has/Mini and Acad/Mini.

Hopefully I made sense trying to write this out?

Curiouser and curiouser...the Scalemates timeline for my Academy MiG-23 says that it is the Hasegawa kit simply re-boxed. I'm not sure that's true - the Hasegawa kit had raised panel lines IIRC, and mine has recessed panel lines. Plus, my box states "Made in Korea." Erik may be on to something, namely that the mold used to make the kit that I have was/is owned by Minicraft, and is not the mold being used today to produce the Academy kits. More sleuthing required! 🙂

I can confirm that the Hasegawa Mig23/27 has raised panel lines because I built one approx 20 years agoand engraved it partly new. But I remember that the fit was´nt so bad.

As I understand it, Academy took many Hasegawa/Minicraft molds and changed the mold from raised to engraved. It still means that this is a reboxing, although with "new" parts.

If the timeline says that the Academy kit is a rebox of Hasegawa, the timeline is wrong. The shapes are markedly different. This is not a reboxing by any means.

Hi Komoras, i used a wash of oils.

About the kits origins, on the pictures you have the Academy kit, the last i build and the other is the Hasegawa kit, completely different kits, no rebox at all one has engraved panel lines and the other are raised panel lines, the Hasegawa kit is by far much superior to the Academy one!
