Thank you Fabian!
I used the AFV painting system for russian green from Vallejo:
acrylicosvallejo.com..en-4bo/family/17/118
and several pigments for rust and soot.
Absolutely stunning work, Ulf! I too really love the paintjobs. Great skills in both building and painting! 👍
The diorama base looks seriously awesome! Great idea and execution of the small drawer for the information 👍 👍 👍
Thank you guys!🙂
Regarding the end result I am afraid you'll need a lot of patience: the vehicles are not finished yet, there's a lot of luggage, equipment and ammo to be painted, landscaping to be done and about 8 figures to be painted...
Hello lads, I finished the frame of the display and assembled the VW Typ 82. Washing, drybrushing and some chipping are still to be done, but first I bring the Krupp tractor on the same level and treat both vehicles parallely. Hope you like it.
I know the book very well, so this is of special interest for me. Very well done so far!
Hi Ulf, this one evolves nicely ...
Can't wait to see them all together on the base!
Good work until now - I like it... 👍 - Think I start reading the book this evening again!
Ah, you know it? Then you're the second one i ever met, who knew it before I published my project.
Looking good! The little Pak with all it's PE is fascinating! Also thanks for all the in progress shots. If I'm building, I often forget to take pictures because I'm in a building "flow" 😉
Thank you, Ingmar! The "building flow" is quite familiar to me as well! 🙂 Nevertheless I like to keep records every step I take and so I take my pictures.
you are welcome, works like this are helping to restore my mojo of which the chaos of life has interrupted, temporarily 🙂
Well, I hope "chaos of life" does not mean something really serious...
Good morning, I just added some pictures of the Krupp Protze which I brought to the same level as the Kübelwagen. After that I can treat both vehicles paralelly with the finish (fading, washing, chipping, dust). Hope you like it!
Really nice work Ulf! Especially the painting of the truck looks awesome!
Hallo Ulf!
Thank you, lads! Very much appreciated.
@David: weathering is still to come. See above! 😉
@Christian: the camo scheme is more or less phantasy but it is a given fact that before the change to the famous three-color-camo '43 it was quite usual to use dark brown color for the camo of grey vehicles. So I did the same. My intention was to make the truck more interesting and to underline the fact, that both german vehicles belong to different units and different arms.
Excellent ! I always thought that the camo changed from grey to dark yellow before the three tone camo. If you are watching original pics from this time you will find many grey vehicles painted over with dark yellow as well. But anyway... very nice paint job on your Krupp!
You're right. Combinations of Grey with brown or with sand yellow were quite common. For my dio I chose brown as it matches better to the scenery.
Hi folks! Made some progress: all guns and vehicles are finished except road dirt! Hope you enjoy the pictures!
Hi Ulf ! Outstanding work on that Krupp so far ! This will be a great dio! See You this month in Hamburg mate!
Hi fellow modellers! I went on a little with landscaping on the base I made before.
As you see, the two guns which are the topic of the scene are a bit aside but that impression will be balanced by the figures. Most of them will examine the russian gun, only one of them is going to have a look at the burnt out tractor. Hope you like it.
It looks awesome already Ulf, I can't wait for the textures and objects on the landscape 🙂 Great project, I must admit it although I don't build AFV at all 👍
Ulf, really nice work, loving your use of chipping on the rust and seats 🙂
Made some progress with landscaping and manufactured my first trees.
Moin Ulf!
Das sieht schon richtig gut aus! Das wird bestimmt ein super Dio!
Thanks Achilleas! Right now I work on a tall Larch. Stay tuned!
Acki, vielen Dank! Inwiefern zu hoch? Das versteh ich grad nicht so richtig. Ist doch kein Hexenwerk.
Thx, Achilleas! Believe it or not: I spent the whole weekend preparing weapons, gear, equipment, ammo and baggage for the scene. Must be more than 100 parts!
I will keep you informed about the progress on the trees.
Hi folks, the project went on with trees and equipment.
Hope you like it.
Sehr lehrreich. Insbesondere die Herstellung von Bäumen. Das werd bestimmt ein Blickfänger. 👍👍👍
Looks realy good so far 👍 Can hardly wait to see the completed masterpiece 🙂
Good morning fellow modellers!
Made some progress again, hope you like it. Have fun!
That makes me sad! 🙁 I wanted it to be looking real! 😉
Just kidding - thank you!
Made an important progress over the easter days: the arrangement of the figures has been fixed. 🙂
Hallo Ulf!
Good job with the cannibalization of the figures kits Ulf. Usually I do the same hehe. They are looking good in their positions ... 👍
great progress !!!! if you have some time tell us about folliage at trees , is it ready or you make it ??? thanks a lot
Thank you so much, mates!🙂
Achilleas, I used foliage from MiniNatur and followed the instructions of the manufacturer. You find several descriptions here:
mininatur.de/products_instructions.php?lang=en
iss ja wohl Hammer , die Figuren sollten in Cheb wohl den nächsten Pokal sichern 👍 👍 👍
Ulf, if you're going to continue like this, you will run the workshop in Cheb as well 😛 Top notch job on the figures so far, not to mention whole diorama. I hope you will make it in time 👍
Moin Ulf!
Thank you, guys! You are just too nice! My figure painting skills are average in best case so I would like to put others first...
don't be to hard on yourself Ulf the camo on the figures is great ! 🙂
Hi Ulf ! Excellent work on the figures! The splinter camo looks outstanding! Will this dio show the german retreat from the eastern front ?
The figures are more or less finished. Some Details like gun belts a.s.o. are still missing.
@Christian: no, the scene is playing early autumn '41 in Karelia.
Ok thank You! I always thoght that the splinter camo came later, but I`m no expert on german uniforms.
The splinter camo pattern was developed already by the Reichswehr in the early 30s. Most of the Zeltbahnen were printed with this pattern and also clothing, e.g. smocks with this pattern was produced already in pre-war time. The Luftwaffe used it for the famous "Knochensäcke" of their paras.
In the later state of the war field clothing with camo pattern became quite common. The army troops were equipped with splinter and "swamp" pattern, which is slightly different.
Only the Waffen-SS used the more sophisticated patterns like dot pea, oak tree a.s.o..
Ulf, I think you will love this year's special guest workshop in Cheb😉 Great figures by the way 👍
Thank you very much for your kind words! You really flatter me...
David, what workshop do you plan?
@Ulf, Radek Pituch - he will show how to sculpt your own figures, you can start with small tweaks and basic tools. I've seen something similar in Moson last weekend. Very interesting stuff, I think you gonna love it😉 And that's just one of them.
Thank you very much, mates! 🙂
Image 194 looks a bit suss mate. :-/ :-/ But as for the rest.........................Just amazingly wonderful. I am curious as to the length of time this "Moment in time" took ? I love it 🙂
Hey Kerry, what's your problem with #194?!? 😮 I am afraid I didn't get it. 😳
The project took me about two years altogether, not counting some interruptions by other stuff like "The seven dwarves".
Thank you very much, mate!🙂
Holy moly, that looks awesome Ulf! I can't wait to see it live. Very nice setting and the landscaping indeed. Get your briefcase and a tie, we will negotiate about a workshop for the next installment of Cheb Model Show😉
What a masterpiece ! Well worth all that work you invested here, breathtaking ! 🙂
Breathtaking are your comments! Thank you so much, mates! You left me speechless. I never expected such response on my work.
I could already see the diorama live and it looks so great! incredible work! 👍
Top Ulf, I would like to read all the comments but my 8 GB RAM is not enough to open it^^
Wow, you are just too kind! Thank you all! Your enthusiasm makes me walk on water. 😉
I am not able to find the right words for this! Just Fantastic when modellers build such masterpieces!
Hi Ulf, a hint I forgot during Wilnsdorf ... If the tank burned below the tree it is likely that the tree will show some burn marks ....
Thank you, Alan!🙂
Marc, I had an eye on that point: assumed that the flames rose vertically out of the hatches the twigs shouldn't be bruised. But thank you very much for your attention! 🙂
Don't underestimate the heat effect due to radiation. It will definitely damage the tree

It's done, mates!🙂
With great relief I finished my project yesterday. I am so happy that this project turned out exactly in the way I imagined it at the beginning! I am feeling deeply satisfied.
In the next days I am going to make my galeria pictures - stay tuned! 🙂
A big project well done Ulf. 🙂.
Your research material has paid of for you in a wonderful way.
One word will be all.
Superb. !
🙂
Meisterstück ! Fabulous work Ulf ! I rally hope you share some more pics from different perspectives.
This really tells its story so well !
i observed your thread at "modellboard" for a long time, finally you`ve done it, and its just amazing! so many great details and superb painting jobs!
Well done Ulf. Very nice extensive work in all that details. Congratulations 👍
Well done Ulf! I can't imagine the amount of work that you've put in this project. It's really cool setting and landscaping as well as vehicles and figures. I can't wait to see it live😉 👍 Congratulations!
great work !! more pics please !!
This dio would look awesome in sunlight !!
especially with a good background 😄
Thank you Choppa! This is exactly what I planned. I want to shoot the presentation pics outside in front of a matching background. Hope it will be possible next wekend. Stay tuned! 😉
That is really a masterpiece!
All the little details make it almost look like real 🙂
You can almost see the bugs on the ground in this dio. Where is reality when you need it. 🙂
Mmmmmmm, that food smells good. !
I am just waiting for the photos after tomorrow. Lets hope its sunny Ulf. 🙂
Hi Folks!
Today I went outside to take my presentation pics. Quite a lot of them! I hope you like them, have fun!
Wow.... Im speechless... This is really a masterpiece and exhibiton quality! Like I said earlier: The real thing wouldnt look different 🙂
...
Awesome Ulf... Well done!!!
Being black and white brings the realism to life, as that's how it would've been photographed origanally 👍
awesome photos Ulf ! the daylight and the background especially ! awesome dude 🙂
Hallo Ulf!
Respekt!
Unbelievably realistic ! You brought this scene to life in the most artistic way. I took frame 261 for an original wartime picture at first glance !
Absolutely exceptional !
This is fantastic Ulf. I love the leaves in the blender, what a great idea. And the trees. Whole thing is great.
My deeply felt respect .
The meticulousness with which you have dedicated yourself to this diorama is beyond everything that I've ever seen .
Every detail is consistent and contributes to an all-round successful overall impression.
Vehicles , figurines, small parts, plants, trees, terrain... 👍 👍
By connecting the book with your representation the scene is coming straight to live.
Especially the "historically-looking" images are realy good.
They are successfully sending the viewers back to this time .
And thus also "integrate" them into the scenery of the book .
It's always difficult to bring literature to a good model, but you´ve done this really very well. 👍
Thanks for the building report , and thank you for this outstanding gallery. 👍
Maybe its the way the scenery and items are positioned, but the whole thing looks like it is pouring rain. AMAZING.
Thank you all very very much for your compliments! You're just too nice, all of you! It was great pleasure to see that the scene is exactly showing what I had in mind. But the greatest thing to me is that this project made dozens of people order this book in second hand book shops and read it. It means so much to me and I am glad to see that it is still not forgotten. Thanks again mates!👍🙂
Extraordinary, flashing, pure realism...knowing the background of the idea and how much time and love to detail you spent it´s wonderful story in modellers life! Keep on modelling Ulf!
One word, Ulf: SUPERB!!!
Terrific and harmonious overall picture, an incredible number of details ... who wants to improve here, makes it at the highest level 👍
This is an absolutely amazing work. On the first view it does not look spectacular because no tank or dynamic action is shown, but the main effect comes when you start looking around to all the details and small sceneries. I lift my hat – very well done!
Sehr gerne! Also on the second view, photo 261 looks as it was taken from real life!
A great looking diorama and the figures are excellent. I love the B&W pictures. As Christian said photo 261 looks like a picture of the real scene. Congratulations on a fantastic work. 👍 👍 🙂
I can only of one more thing that would add to this diorama when taking photos and that's a smoke bomb or two to create a morning mist effect 🙂
Marc, Alan, Thank you very much!
Choppa, that's a good idea. I plan to take some more pictures when the season matches the scenery. I will include some experiments with cigarette smoke then. Let's see if it works! 😉
B&W pictures looks fabulous already Ulf. With the matching scenery, smoke and deeper depth of field set on your camera, it will be indistinguishable from the real world scene 👍
THX David! I will try my best... 😉
Steve, thx for your concern about my health, but I smoke anyway and it seems to be far more easy this way than to bring dry ice into a bog... 😉
lol !! how about burning some damp leaves instead, more smoke and you don't have to waste your cigarettes trying to generate enough smoke 🙂
Another idea is to get a mate to use one of those squeezy water misting spray bottles that one uses to water indoor plants with or one of those window cleaning bottles (but loaded with water) to create a fine misty rain effect 😄
[img1]
Thank you very much, John!🙂
@Choppa: harhar! Great ideas! 😉 What is your profession, film director? 😄
Right now I have no plan to come to Munster as exhibitor next year, but . . . well, you never know!😉
I would be more interested to present my stuff at the Euro Model Expo in Heiden. Is this an event you are joining?
I have no idea where Heiden is located 😳 , but why not if it is not too far from Hamburg ! 🙂
@Hanno: Du kommst aus Hamburg?!? Diesen Freitag findet unser nächster Modellbaustammtisch statt.
Excellent work, Ulf. I like your diorama. 👍
Dear mates, when I made the first presentation pictures of my finished diorama it was springtime.
But the scene is playing in the autumn '41 in Karelia, Finnland.
Now, as the season fits better to the diorama I went out into the moor near my hometown again and took another series of pictures which I would like to show you here.
As before I added some extra which have been turned into black and white for giving you a historical feeling.
I hope you like the new pics and you forgive me bringing up this old stuff again...
Regards
Ulf
Ulf, I love a journey back in time and this one takes me there.🙂
A stunning result that looks so natural.👍
You do 'live' your modelling mate, that's for sure.🙂
Salute. !
Thank you so much for these kind words, Kerry!
By the way: do you spend 24 hours a day in front of your screen?!? 😮 😉
Since I retired, I now spend most days at home, and checking in on scalemates is just like checking my watch for the time, and besides that, I just love keeping up with what's happening mate.🙂
I am a serious modeller and mostly I am at my work bench. 👍
...
Likewise Kerry...
Not on computer 24/7, but it's on most days. When I'm not at the workbench, I check in scalemates!!!
I'm always using PC, whilst at workbench for handy easy reference...
It's one of my most important Modelling Tools.😉
You're right, it's an almost perfect tool!🙂 👍
Worth to be used around the clock.
Great modeling and the same for your pics. I'm glad that you painted one of your guns green. I'm working on a diorama that has a 1/48th scale 75mm Pak 40 and it's painted green also. Gary
Well Ulf, these new pictures look amazing! They are the ultimate proof that You did everything right! I love the Book and Your Dio covers every detail from this scene. May be some day I can see it in reality.
I know I would need back surgery if I saw it at a show, as I would happily spend hours bent over looking at all that amazing detail. 🙂 👍
Thank you mates, you're just too kind!
I'm glad you like it that much.🙂
Thank you, John!
Kerry, ever thought of using an endoscope from a convenient place instead of risking your health? 😉
Ah, thank you Doktor, I just happen to have one out the back. LOL 🙂 👍
The 'smoke' effect is brilliant. !
I get the feeling that 'Any moment, something is bound to happen.'
All 285 of them is a true work of art. 👍.
Exceptional in every way. 🙂
@ Kerry,
I revived this album, as a remembering of Ulf's excellent work.
I read today, that sadly he passed away. He was only 55, I think.
A very nice thought Rui, yes way to young to leave this world. Just makes you appreciate what you have and that you can't take it for granted.🙁
Totally agree Michael, and well said.👍
Rui, thank you for the revival, just what we all need right about now. 🙁
God speed. Amen. 🙁
Ulf has died? I'm truly shocked and saddened to hear that. I noticed that he hasn't been on the site for a while and wondered what happened to him.
my condolences to the family. let this incredible dio and our admiration be and homage to him.
Wow, just read this. I'm shocked. My condolences to his family and friends.
My god! The atmosphere this piece brings with it is amazing. What an amazing scene! I love every inch of it! Congratulations! The layout, the paintjob, the scenery, the positioning and poses of the soldiers... Superb!
Great diorama. Lots of details filling every inch of it. It looks very convincing and atmospheric. You managed to bring it to life. Inspiring work.
Sorry. I haven't read the previous comments. I hope I haven't offended anyone.
"No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone's life is only the core of their actual existence."

Album info
Dear fellow modelers,
after more than half a year of deviation from my main project I'd like to pick it up again and I use this occasion to share it with you - if you like.
Those of you who can understand German may wish to learn about the background here:
modellboard.net/inde...msg611595#msg611595
WARNING! That's a lot of text!
For the others here's the short version:
EBFDN is the shortcut of my all time favourite book "Einen bessern findst du nicht" which tells the story of a german soldier in WWII and his best friend, a young lieutenant.
My idea was to interpret some sequences of this book as diorama scenes.
The first one is this here.
The title refers to the fact, that the german 37mm AT-gun was sold almost identically but with 45mm bore to the Soviet Union by the thousands.
Some german AT-infantry soldiers, on the road in Karelia with their own PAK 36 examine an abandoned russian 45mm-gun and discover that it was fabricated by Rheinmetall-Borsig in Germany.
Here we go!
