Part hand part airbrush. In the field many were both. Check out original pics when doing your research. Few profiles capture the texture of historic aircraft accurately. Check out D-Day stripes on A/C photographed at the time. I've seen a pic of a C-47 done with a kitchen mop. So was Dunham's P-47 in the PI (well known Revell 1/32 kit every builder slaves over perfect straight edge lines on the fuse of that one). It's kind of like the swastika-no swastika argument on Luftwaffe A/C. If you're historically accurate it will be there unless it was a hand off to an Axis ally or captured bird.
