sovereign sd.kfz. 231? vintage kit
the Kit
the main hull is a big block of resin, but it's okay for a fun project
box and instructions, you need some measuring and scratchbuild skills before attempting this type of kits.
test fitting the tires and driveshaft
looks already like the picture
as long as the wheels are straight well be fine
recreating the rainguard
testfitting
added the front fenders
still okay
shaping the back cupola, which isn't included in the kit
the cupola is made from a small piece of tube filled with plasticcard and sanded into a dome shape
test fitting
placed the spare fuel tank, the front axel isn't glued yet.
added the air intakes from plasticcard, the original is cast in white metal and far from recognizable
the 20mm kwk 30.... or it could be part of the exhaust, because I'm missing one or the other
the MG34 next to the kwk or exhaust... I found nothing even remotely resembling anything close to a MG34. so we need to improvise.
the victim... for which I got an Aber update kwk and MG.
the results after some reworking
starts to look like an Sd.Kfz. 231, I don't know about the turn signals though. I think I could scratch something better from plasticard
the front axel has it's stearing mechanism attached, but you can't see.
the close up turret, I drilled holes in the guns. To resemble somewhat of the original KWK and MG, it's close enough for this project. At least to me.
next project: the lights
upgrade to the pointers
there was light
The panzergrau base coat (Tamiya xf63)
Base coat with highlights (Tamiya xf53 + xf2)
Let there be light
Mud flaps and taillights
Tires painted with Ammo rubber & tires
Top view
I forgot the width indicators, mirror (from Tamiya SD.kfz. 232) and numbers plate. Once they are painted they will find there way on to the model.
Decals are from Truckline, but I had to use five because the first three disintegrated when I tried to her them from the sheet. The ones that didn't broke on the model causing a lot of cleanup and very delicate handling. Can't say I recommend them at thus point.
Love that ass.
Some details and damage done with acrylics
Ready for a layer of gloss
All wheaterd up
Wheatering en washing done with Van Gogh oil paints (Raw umber, Payne's grey, Zinc white, Naples yellow. The previous color + Yellow ochre and chromium green were used for spare tire canvas and the wooden toolhandles
Although it's a bit of a mutt, I still love it!
All that's left is a Matt finish, then I can finally grow a beard and move on to the next 15 year project.
And it is done!
Well there you have it, it now resides safely on a shelf in the living room.

Well until now It's not that bad actually, Sovereign did a good job in casting the part's. But you must forget the present day kit accuracy.

Thanks but I must say it's more work than I planned, I'll upload some pics this weekend of the (slow) progress.

It's finished, and should represent an Sd.Kfz 231 from 4th Panzer divison - 36th regiment during the Polish campaign in 1939.
I used the following sources for detailing, painting and placement in time:
- German Armoured Car Drawings P. 27-35
- Pz. Tract 13
- Wehrmacht Support Vehicle's P. 33
- Concord Armour at War p. 24 and 70
- Armoured Vehicle's of the German Army 1905-1945
All gaps and blancs are a product of my imagination.
It was a fun build, but I if you have the urge to try and make models as accurate as possible... don't! I repeat, don't buy this!
Thank you, for all the encouragement I received during the build!
