WIP Mogami
No airbrush, no fancy paints. Just hairy sticks and thick Revell mayonnaise, uh acrylics
Hull halves joined and front deck glued
Lower rear deck glued
Torpedo stations glued
Front bridge glued
Funnel glued
Dry fit
Pieces painted, part 1
Mixed a reddish brown to match the deck. Quite happy with my hairy brush skills
Even though the paint is thick, more layers are needed
The paint really is thick!
Mixed my own buff for the boats
Glued together
Added some gunmetal pigmet on the rails on the rear deck and the anchor chains
Tiny planes consisting of 5 parts!
Only three parts here
Painted some of the smaller parts
I used two different tooth picks for the insignia. The point cut off, and two slightly different diameters. Dip in red paint and use as a die.
Loads of small stuff painted grey.
Final assembly
Nearly there
Rigging underway
Barely visible rigging

Smuggled this old stash dweller along on vacation. 😄
Just glue, sandpaper, hairy sticks and thick old Revell acrylics. What could go wrong?

Working on it. 😄
It is really satisfying, just working with a brush. Not fussing about thinning and pressure and cleaning of the airbrush.

As i am someone who feels like they're missing out without an airbrush it's nice to hear someone else praise working without one!!
Looks good so far. Will follow as I have never built a ship!

Welcome Brian. If you want to be inspired by brush painting, give Augie a look. She is really great with a hairy stick.
The result with an airbrush can be much better, if you're halfway decent. Compared to this build anyway.

Well, she's finished. I put the pedal to the metal and raced ahead. Pictures can be found here: Completed - IJN Mogami | Album by Mahoo76 (1:700)
It was relaxing to build old-skool. In the end I couldn't help myself and added a bit of rigging. If Lode can do it in 1/200, I can mess it up in 1/700! 😄
