He 115B (WIP)
Typical short run kit: no alignment aids
Typical short run kit: no numbers in the sprues
Start of cockpit assembly
Start of cockpit assembly
Fit is not bad, but there are no guides so we have to be extra careful
A lot of… adjustments are required
The kit was acquired second hand, missing a few resin parts, so I had to scratch a bit
Right side, ready for paint
Left side, ready for paint
Ready for paint
Opening the holes for the Eduard PE dials
Wholes open
Pre shading with black
RLM02 applied inside
Some work will have to be done, to preserve these shapes on the floaters
Thinning the inside before glueing the Eduard PE's dials
Some heavy putty + sanding required
Preparing the details that will be removed in the floaters because of all of the sanding required
Paiting the seats
Washed with Ammo PLW Green Brown (A.MIG-1612) and varnished over with MRP-127 Matt Varnish
Closing
To allow fit, I had to add a spacer made from sprue, to force the wing’s greater width
Fitting some of the clear parts, I must confess I was expecting much worse
A bit of detail on the intakes of the engines, with a soft tissue to simulate the fine mesh
Clear parts being glued
I didn't notice the interior colour is RLM72 and NOT RLM02 - I had to acquire the paint, from AK (AK RC276, in set nº 30) and repaint what I could; closed now | PS: not sure the interior here was RLM02 or 72 again.... well, not changing now, that's for sure!

Wow, it has wingzzz!!!! 😄
Chin resin "thing" assembled with Ultra Glue
A bit of a gap on the wing roots

This is the way!
Just got the gorgeous 3D printed beaching trolley from Fire Scale Modeler!
Reinstating the sanded detail on the floaters
Details glued in place
On its "feet"
Floaters glued in place, some clean up to do...
Perfect plastic putty applied and cleaned with a wet cotton swab
Perfect plastic putty applied and cleaned with a wet cotton swab
Perfect plastic putty applied and cleaned with a wet cotton swab
Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black diluted with Mr Color Leveling Thinner applied all over
Starting with the yellow and the red (MRP paints) over white primer
Some marbling with AKRC 273 (RLM65 - 1941)
Painting of the lower half complete
Attaching the clear parts in the front of the wings: not a pleasing task of pushing, sanding, polishing and swearing.
Taped and blu-tac‘ed, ready for paint
RLM73 applied with AKRC 277
RLM73 applied with AKRC 277
RLM72 applied with AKRC 276
Adding salt
Painted over the salt with diluted paint (base color + white)
Painted over the salt with diluted paint (base color + white)
Salt removed
Salt removed
Varnished with Tamiya X-22
First decals applied; very bright, will probably tone them down
Testing AK's "Worn Effects" and "Heavy Chipping" on the spare horizontal stabilizers, using Tamiya XF-2 Flat White thinned with X-20A, not lacquer
"Heavy Chipping" seems more controllable and I like the result
"Worn Effects" makes the paint come out in big slabs, very difficult to control - I do not like the result
And the winner is... "Heavy Chipping"
First splots of white (Tamiya XF-2) applied and chipped
Exhausts painted with Burnt Metal (AK 484)
Base coat of dark metal paint applied (Tamiya LP-19)… assuming it was made of metal
Beaching trolley painted Olive Drab and chipped
Progress so far, all polished and varnished with Tamiya X-22
Progress so far, all polished and varnished with Tamiya X-22
Progress so far, all polished and varnished with Tamiya X-22
Painted the main bay outline with Tamiya X-19 Smoke
Floaters water line painted
Using Air Weathering Set A.MIG 7414 (German Early Fighters & Bombers) from Ammo for pin washes
Using stronger Tamiya black enamel wash for the control surfaces
Using "Salt Streaks for Ships" from AK, an enamel wash reference AK 306
After dry, I stippled the lines with the product with a wet brush, then streaked down, again with a we brush, and finally cleaned above and below the line with a wet brush and with a cotton bud; finally, after dry, streaked and cleaned excess with a very stiff flat brush
Some progress in the woods
Trolley assembled and painted (wheels not glue yet)
Glueing the trolley in place, with Ammo Ultra Glue
Making all four wheels touch the floor at same time is no small task 🙁
Rear wheels... still wobbly, they were corrected later
Inching forward, now with all the wheels and the propellers glued
Inching forward, now with all the wheels and the propellers glued
That magic moment when you start removing the masks
Masks removed
Finished!!! 🙂 Final photos can be seen in the other album under this same project. Thank you for your kind words and support througout the months it took me to complete this demanding build!

Welcome @Markus; let's see how I can manage the symmetry of the plane - the part are not perfectly molded and the joints are minimal

Yes so I´ve heard. Especially trouble with connecting the wings to the fusalage so they wont risk breaking off. There is a film on youtube where they fix the problem Ill have a look if i can find it.

Yes, please do let me know; I will try to do all the work on the wings before attaching them; I also worry about the symmetry... I'll try to make a jig to ensure this...

@David, this is a typical Special Hobby, so some filling and sanding is required; not too bad though, and the clear part fit surprisingly well; the proof of the pudding will be, next, the joining of the wings to the fuselage, let's see how that goes...

Yes, @Ben, a lot indeed - I think this is, by far, the most "windowed" plane I have ever built! 😄

Welcome @Melgg - I'm currently waiting for the floats, which are being used to make a beaching trolley. The wings did take a LOT of putty and sanding. 😓

Nice progress Ricardo. I like your salt effect, and appreciate the chipped paint testing. Have you tried to chip a lacguer-thinned paint?

Thank you @Alec; I have previously tried to chip MRP paints and it was almost impossible; I have subsequently read about this and apparently lacquer based paints (or Tamiya thinned with Lacquer Thinner) are very, very hard to chip

You are putting a lot of effort in this model and it is showing off your hard work.

Thank you very much @mates, your kind comments give me additional motivation; almost there, moving now to closing the beaching trolley and to the washes; then oils and, hopefully, build should be finished in the next couple of weeks

The perspective created by photograph number 81 shows off the sheer size and detail that you have put into this project. Very nice.

Thank you mates - the final steps are quite difficult and reveal some missalignement of the floats, which were not noticeable until now; furthermore the wheel placement is not that great, so I spent a long time glueing and unglueing everything with Ultra Glue; I do not know how I would cope if I was using CA glue....

This is a great photo. Any model builder will admire how perfect this looks. Your attention to detail and finishing techniques are skill I can only aspire to. Thank you for taking the time to share so much of your work.
