ZSU-57-2
Operator: Iraqi Army
Location: Iraqi Southern No-Fly Zone
Timeframe: 1996
Personal interest:
Although the ZSU-57-2 was an older model of Russian self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery, the Iraqis made it more effective by pairing it with systems that incorporated an on-board radar, like the ZSU-23-4, 9K31 Strela-1, and 9K35 Strela-10. The ZSU-57-2 was often co-located with medium range SAM batteries to prevent coalition aircrews from flying low under their weapon engagement zone. Iraq used the ZSU-57-2 with success in Operation Desert Storm, but it was not a substantial threat to Operation Southern Watch missions.
