Ebay gluebomb restoration project. Stripped the built parts down and cleaned them up.The beginnings of paint up. So much more do. But fun bit next, painting metallics by hand, and weathering it.

Just started to block in the aluminium tub colours, only added a watered down acrylic brown/black wash. Now I wait for it to dry, then ink wash, aluminium layer, then varnish, then another light brown wash.

First ink wash, just to put some life into the aluminium. I'll dry brush another metallic layer over this, then varnish, the do some more washes. Not a quick process, mainly due to drying times, but it looks really good.

That's it for today. Still very early stage, second ink wash. It will become more subdued as I continue with layering the aluminium. This is an acceptable beginning though.

That's it for today, and for now on this project. I've lost inspiration and desire to work on it, so back in the box, until I feel inspired to do it again. Just not feeling it, and I don't want to muck it up. Added a varnish layer, fitted the foot pedals and fixed the hole in the tub wheel bay cover.

Back to the big Ferrari. The cool thing about 70s Tamiya kits, is they gave you buildable tools. It's a screwdriver and wheel nut wrench. Nice.

Not a lot happening at the moment, I'm doing a lot of sanding, glueing small parts, changing bolt heads on the rear of the gearbox and brakes, as these will be seen. I'll add and swap out bolts on the black crossmember, suspension brace, as its also quite noticable. Also drilled holes in the e haust brackets, for the retention springs, Just a quick dry fit too. Even unpainted the engine is an impressive piece of hand-built model engineering from Tamiya.

Scratch built the rear brake air intake cooling scoop bracket. Mad? Me? Probably 😂 there is no line down the middle, it's the crappy silver plastic. It makes dark marks appear at joins and sprue attachment points. I'll putty over the intake, then paint it to look like the clear fibreglass, suitably weathered, with a piece of tape to lesson the amount of air reaching the brakes, just like on the real thing. Exciting things ahead 😉

Weeeell, that's all for today. I'm knackered. Pretty good progress, I've almost finished the 312T's Transverse gearbox, added the plumbing, detail and weathering paint, painted the brake airscoops, added nuts, and painted the suspension crossbeam. Only the anti-roll bar and a bracket still to fit. Bloody good fun that was.

As always, doesn't look like I've done anything at all today. Finished off the anti-roll bar and brackets, made a start on the left hand side suspension lower arm, swapped nuts out for better ones, wheel mount, drive shaft and shock absorber, also made a start on the rear wing mounting bracket and battery holder.

Not a huge update, as I've had a few days away from modelling. Finished the coil springs on both sides and the right upright and drive shaft. Haven't got to finishing the anti-roll bar yet, as I'm changing the support rods for thinner wire, so it looks more in scale. More soon.

Back to working on the Tamiya 1/12 1975 Ferrari 312T. Today was just to get reacquainted with the kit, remember where I was, what I had planned, and where I'm going. Tested the fit of the rear wheels and tyres, everything is just friction fitted so far, a long way to go yet. That's how good Tamiya kits are, even forty eight year old kits fit together so well. Work will continue tomorrow with the rear anti-roll bar system, as im making the connecting rods more in scale. This is going to look awesome finished.

As usual not a lot new to see. With one thing or another I've been busy with other things recently. But back to the rear of the 312T. Finished the gearbox, and rear suspension, anti-roll bar adjusters. Replaced the kit parts with pins, for a finer appearance.

Sloooow work continues on the 312T. The Ferrari Tipo 015, 2,992 cc (182.6 cu in), flat 12, naturally aspirated, engine is a mini kit in itself. Its going to be a complicated, Spaghetti wiring job, there's twelve wires for the fuel injection and twelve wires for the electrical ignition system. Then all the water and assorted pump plumbing. but it's going to look very cool. I am going to add a few things here and there, and I've sourced some air funnel mesh guards. Also I'll be assembling the Octopuss exhaust system of twelve pipes too. Proper Italian plumbing nightmare, but it is a Ferrari lol 😆 all this is just dry fitted for now.

Mixed bag of modelling today, shook sticks at a few different kits. As winter is approaching, looks like I've got Ships and F1 cars in my future. I've been putting the Ferrari off for months as I worked through my Sci-Fi backlog, soo work will commence on the 1975 world championship winning F1 car, my birth year. Doing the bodywork air-intake mod, and scratch building the fibreglass valve covers, plus adding a lot of missing details, wiring and plumbing, swapping nuts n bolts, scratching the accelerator assembly, and spray painting the final bodywork for the first time... a lot to do, but it'll look very cool.

These curbside chassis, really upset me. Just like the Volvo VN. If the manufacturer, went to the trouble, of making an engine, and separate frame parts, with other kits, then why would they cheap out, on kits like these? I love what you're doing with this though. Keep the pictures coming, buddy 👍

I didn't put up pictures of all the cutting and sanding. A summary:
All parts are cut, sanded and glued where possible. Only a few drops of filler were needed.
The cab consists of 10 parts that need to be positioned just right. **** job, but I think I managed.
Next up: Primer.

And primer is on after a monster session. 200ml primer + 50ml SLT = just enough.
Primer is zero paints grey. But a dirty grey.

The Zero stone grey was a bit depressing, so I mixed a batch 50/50 with white to lighten things up a bit.
Tamiya aluminium was airbrushed, and Tamiya black as well.
Done with airbrushing for now. Letting the paint cure before decalling.

Like the plane and the livery you are going for.
My two cents on one or two aspects: I found the brass undercarrige and the cockpit section you listed as aftermarket pretty useless. The undercarriage doesn´t solve the problem to ease the alignment of the landing gear and the cockpit section doesn´t provide any better detail than the kit parts. I set both aside and rescribed the soft outlines of the cockpit doors. Pouring transparent resin into the cabin windows gave a nice flush appearance. You may consider that.

Thanks Michael and Nicolas. As my second kit to build, I thought I spice it up a bit with some aftermarket stuff, indeed, the new cabin with the new windows gave me some head scratching as to how install it, then figured it eventually out. My alignment looks a bit messy and I hope u can make it look aligned with putty etc… so far my opinion as an inexperienced builder is that you could safely leave it stock, as is….
I did not come yet to the brass parts and hope it will be better with these parts. Let's see 🙂

I'm glad to see, that it's not just me, who does all this type of prep work. I've spent far too much time and money, on tools, gizmo's and fabrication of various things, just to try and speed up this process. Yet, I still end up falling back to the back of a #11 knife blade!
I'll hang around for this one mate, mainly to see the outcome of those amazing decals. But also to watch how the trailer goes together?
I helped my son build the Spacecab, way back in the early 2000's. He didn't enjoy it and abandoned his efforts 🙁 No wonder he became a plumber 😛

Kerry Cox taught Peter Hardy and Peter taught me: "Better remove those lines, you'll always know they're there."
I mostly use the cutting edge of the blade to scrape, I'll try the back sometime.
I assembled the chassis today and it seems perfectly straight. A lot of work remains before I can start on the decals.

If you draw the edge, of the back of the blade, it gives you a nice smooth, flat surface. It also doesn't dull your sharp blade? After a while, it becomes second nature. I have found, that those nasty mold lines, show up even more, when paint is applied? Even when I glue two parts together, it's always the back of the knife, that deals with the seam. You should definitely try it, and see if you notice the difference.

I managed some work on the axles Tuesday evening and I had half a day to myself yesterday. So I built the box with a lot of added plastic to get everything squared. I'll be sanding the outside and I don't want the thing to fold.
The mudflaps were unconvincing , so I went to town on them. Your opinions please?

I've heard of guys, filling in reefers, with expanding foam?
I've never personally done it, because I like the option of opening doors. Those mudflaps look so much better now, too.

Mmm, insulation foam in a reefer….
There is/was a load of cyanide in that stuff. Not something I want to emit in my hobby room.
My 2k also contains cyanide, but those vapours are mainly vented outside

I have never checked mate, and I've used it for sealing gaps, etc, for decades? However, I've definitely not used it on any models. In fairness though, all my current reefers are from AMT. I love the fact that they use 1 piece plastic, for the sides, base and top. It definitely makes them sturdy. I do have a few Italeri reefers though, and I was thinking about lining them with thin plastic? I don't want to compromise the look, so I thought maybe some 1mm sheet, would work? What do you think mate?

Lining with 1mm sheet is a possibility, but … see my new picture. On both sides there are two half rods running the whole length of the trailer and the ceiling is littered with protruding ejection marks.
The floor is smooth as the ejection marks are on the underside.
This Revell edition has water slide decals, the Italeri reefer I have has two big stickers for each side. Will be hell to line up, so I'll probably paint something.

On large decals, it's best to cut them into 3. It just makes things easier. I honestly wouldn't have a clue what to do with stickers though? That's exactly what I have, on my Smokey and the Bandit 2 trailer.
Which reminds me...
Jerry from Modeltruckin, is retiring. Last orders are being taken upto end of July. Get them decals ordered mate, before you can't get them again!

I just took a closer look at your pictures. I see those rails now. I'm guessing that they were a feature, to stop pallets from ramming up tight to the side, on the 1:1 version? The injection pin marks, I can Dremel away. You've actually got me thinking about digging out one of my reefers now, lol

In the real one, there will be a strip with slits to secure the cargo. But those are generally not that high and low. See picture.

Late to the party. (I have been really busy with my wife's garden and my 1:1 car) Following. Making your box square and straight looks like quite the endeavor.

Dry fitting the door showed a small gap between them. I later added a strip of styrene to the back. Stiffening the doors by accident.
I removed the moulded rear lights, only realising too late that they're hollow. A thin sheet of styrene helped. I also glued a strip to the storage bins. Too much sanding otherwise. Now all trailer parts are ready for painting.

Lol, maybe because it's more true to life?
Although I have to admit, I've crawled under a few trailers, and they were all the same, light rust/brown colour. Even on fleet management, the chassis and underneath, never get washed. I do a lot of work for a global logistics company and their trucks always look clean, but they're not. My brother works for a national retailer, driving big rigs. I asked him when he washes the underside of his trailer? His answer was priceless, but unfortunately, unprintable 😉

I actually had red oxide primer in mind for the red parts, but didn't at the last moment!
I also never wash the underside of my car. And I've worked in port, so I can imagine some colourful language.

Done with airbrushing for now. Only some detail painting to do.
And after curing, it's decals time!
