I don't understand how more skilled modellers have multiple sets that they're working on at once. Like don't you have a budget? Don't you have other things to do? Don't you have a job to go to??? I build like one model every other, sometimes every month.

Wait until you hear about the stash sizes of some modellers. 😄
When I was a kid, kits used to be cheaper, so even with my pocket money I could afford to buy a small kit every week or two.
Obviously everyone's budget is different, but some people do have a lot of spare cash to spend on modelling, going from pocket money to a wage makes kits a lot more affordable (if you're lucky). Some of the members are retired and can build kits all day if the want to, the oldest one I know is 83 and still producing decent quality models.
I retired early and usually do other stuff in the mornings and then have a one or two hours in the afternoon to mess around with plastic. I only ever work on one model at a time, other people prefer to jump between builds to keep themselves interested.
Generally, modelling is a lot cheaper than some other hobbies.

Oh well congrats on an early retirement gorby
I guess yeah models were cheaper in the 70-80's due to inflation
And power to the 83 year old building models
But yeah i guess scale modeling is cheaper than mountain biking or skydiving

Maybe I should have said "more affordable". Even taking inflation into account I think kits were priced mainly for kids. I'm not convinced they are aimed at the pocket money market now as most modellers are adults with a bigger budget. I suspect the 1/72 fighter kits I could afford in the 1970's are comparatively less affordable for kids these days.

I am not productive at all. Turns out, I like scale modeling very much, but mostly when I am bored.
Turns out, even though I do like fixing kits and making improvements, I would rather have scale model kits requiring little to no fixing.
Slowly but surely, still I get more and more practice. A recent "halleluja" moment was when I learned about this thinner mix for my Vallejo paints, using an airbrush, no more tip dry, also learned to use both my 0.35 (better for putting paint onto intricate details) and my 0.5 airbrush guns (so much more paint flow).
My kit stash size is starting to get rediculous. I also like investing into new tools, something I couldn't do before, couldn't afford it.
There seems to be some people, other than me, putting together and seemingly frequently completing very nice ship models, even including some ocean diorama, most impressive. 🙂

I suppose you messed ip the drive train and had to hide it?! 😜
Kidding aside. Nice story and beautiful execution. A lot for details to discover. Excellent paint job and very convincing mud. A real show stopper.
