The frame is constructed in the first building step. It's a bit complicated to analyse, but you have to get through this to get all the components ready to fit between the profiles.

![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
All welcome, I now assembled the front and 4th axles. All are movable in a steering position, but as usual you have to decide and then fix everything. Also I found that one set of wheels is not parallel, so I cut the steering arm and added a millimeter of sprue roundel. Does this not appear if they test-fit these kits, or did I make a build error?
9 March, 22:22
![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
All 4 axles are now added to the frame, together with the shock absorbers that I had to shorten a bit at the front axle. The torsion bars are fixed at one side so I can remove the air bellows for painting.

![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
The fuel tank hoops and steps are now replaced with PE. The steps are quite hard to bend in the right order and no dimensions or angles are given to mount them.

![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
The radiator is now detailed with the Voyager silver mesh. You only see the front side now, it's on both sides. When it was assembled I realised that the air horns also need a PE part. There is some warping in the sump and the top cover, I hope it isn't evident looking through the front grille later on. The air tanks must be stripped like the fuel tanks, but you get equal lengths of PE strips to attach two kinds of tank. Therefore I clipped 4 of them and redrilled the hole on the end. The assembly with the 2 tanks and the container is suspended on a single PE part that I had first bent the wrong direction, I hope it doesn't get fatigued.
27 April, 22:53
![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
I started the interior with some colored PE from Eduard. The Black Dog figures are assembled and also a Maim figure and two Legend armament sets were added to the project. But the Maim gunner appeared to have a large backpack, so I don't know he's feasible.
4 May, 21:50
![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
Continuing the interior with the seats. Also the fenders are completed, it's very important to align the bent beams that sometimes are replaced woth Voyager assemblies. It's preferable to use that, the replacements are sturdier than the originals.
22 June, 22:48
![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
The cabin exterior is done using some original kit PE and clearparts, but both have problems. The clearparts are not calibrated and have distortion because of this. I will be replacing the large parts with plexiglass. The kit PE is wobbly because it's not thick enough., I even had to hammer it quite a while. Then I found out Voyager does replace half of the protection kit, but not the large parts behind the doors. At least half of the creases are removed then. But Voyager messed up at the hood closing strip, providing two identical parts in stead of mirrored ones. This could be remedied with some re-riveting.
29 June, 23:52
![](/profiles/img/15656-162-s.jpg)
The pVoyager photo etch cabin roof is constructed with all its nightmarish embossing deformities corrected, the badly fitting airco module that was mosly bent the wrong way around so it broke at one instance. I replaced the 3 largest clearparts with a piece of Trumpeter 1/350 airplane set transparent box cover, that has the right thickness to be able to sand the corner roundings in it. The air purifier system is not installed completely, because that would impede the clearpart masking. So now it's down to interior painting.

One note: the model will not be in German paint. I will make it as a vehicle captured by the People's Army of Poland (1945). Therefore, the interior will be relatively empty - after all, Polish soldiers did not use schmeissers 🙂

![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thanks gents! Erik, you are right, the additional details will make it a nicer build but it's noteworthy how good this kit is after so many years. And yes Jakube, it's a BIG bird 🙂

Alec: they were several colors schemes used on dash 7. Which scheme intend you to build?

Hello Bernhard - I really like the later schemes of Light Gull Gray with white fuselage decking. I came across several renditions of BuNo 147967's scheme (see my project's banner) and as long I figure out the markings (specifically, what kind of decals I will need to make myself), this will probably be the one.

![](/profiles/img/69549-161-s.jpg)
Alec, your modifications to this kit are great. 👍 I just don't understand one thing. Is there any reason why you didn't simply weaken parts 62-65, 66 and 67 from the inside and then glue the Eduard parts to them?
23 March 2023, 00:15
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Welcome Jakube 👍
Ludvíku: A fair question regarding a choice I myself questioned. I though the Eduard parts were too thin (the formed reinforcing metal structure on the interior of the doors seems quite deep to my eye). Also, the front wheel bay door structure looks different than the Eduard interpretation. All that said, I think thinning the kits' parts and adding styrene strips would have been easier. Cheers 👍

Thank you for your reply. I don't mean to disparage your work in any way. I knew you had a reason. I just didn't know what it was.
The result looks very good. 👍 Especially considering the actual size of the parts in 1:72 scale. It's obvious you take great care with all the details. I wish you a steady hand and a good eye throughout the build of the model and look forward to seeing the progress. 🙂

Thank you mates! Frank: I imagine you and others will relate 🙂. Recently I was going through my "keep for just in case" items and failed to get rid of much. Most of such items do not occupy a lot of space, it's much harder to justify keeping junk that does 😉

Great that you continued to work on this bird and uploaded new pics....
But, have you deleted all old pics and uploaded new ones? Normally I check the date to see, where the news are, but here _all_ pics are of the actual date 🙁 But some were definitely not new for me.
4 February, 18:23
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thank you friends for your comments and support, very appreciated.
Jennifer: I am glad you like my ramblings. I realize I get into the weeds, but I always enjoyed others sharing their progress in detail and it has helped me great deal with my own modeling journey, so I am trying to do the same.
Frank, you are correct. There was a discussion some time ago about the preferred sizing of images for albums and I realized mine were pretty small, so I decided to re-upload the old pics in higher resolution. The teaser in the album marks where new work images begin. I hope it's not a big faux pas to do this as I plan to upgrade some of my older albums this way.
5 February, 01:02
![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
Thank you Alex - the new bigger picture size is for sure a _good_ reason to replace them 👍
There was also a discussion in feature request that replacing pictures by better ones do not trigger a notify. So this can be done behind the scenes without bother anyone..

![](/profiles/img/user-s.jpg)
A pleasure to follow you on this journey. Sprue goo bubbles are a problem I am familiar with too and is doesn't have to do with stirring. Unfortunately I cannot provide an alternative theory why this happens. Maybe someone out there can enlighten us.
24 February, 07:05
![](/profiles/img/69549-161-s.jpg)
Alec, good progress! 👍 I admire the precision with which you create the details of the model. My admiration is all the greater because your model is in 1/72 scale.
The bubbles could have been caused by a chemical reaction between the sprue material and the solvent, or between the plastic of the model and the "plastic slurry" during drying (similar to adding yeast to dough), but that's just my guess.
24 February, 09:13
![](/profiles/img/27147-902-s.jpg)
Alec, what a no-compromise project! Very inspiring! And fingers crossed that the wind doesn't get out of your sails. 👍🍀
24 February, 09:42
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Hmm, interesting observations regarding the sprue goo bubbling, thanks for commenting on that Michael and Ludvik. Ludvíku, I think there is probably something to your theory. I just bought some dissolved putty from GSI and have high hopes for it.
Gordy: "good grief" about sums it up…
Zbynku, thanks for the encouraging post 🙂
24 February, 12:39
![](/profiles/img/14143-361-s.jpg)
Alec: I am very happy to see that this great project continues. You solved the canopy problem very well. I suspect that your self-made part is clearer than the one from the kit….🙂.
Great details on the wheel bays & landing gear, which is also movable! I am looking forward to further progress.🙂
24 February, 13:56
![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
Great and careful work again!
May be your sprue putty layer was too thick? The extra thin glue need a way to go out. So it is may be better to work in thin layers and give the glue the chance to left the plastic.
I'm also not a fan of normal putty, but I used some days ago the Tamiya Light curing putty (I wrote about in my Swallow project). I like it! But also there it is recommended in the manual to use only thin layers up to 2mm. If you put light on a thicker layer it will get too hot inside and create bubbles. But as this hardens quickly with UV-light it is no problem to apply additional layers.
24 February, 17:27
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thank you mates. I think the canopy was the correct decision, the thickness alone makes it so much better. Silver linings…
Bugs, I think you are right about the goo. I did glob it on pretty thick, forgetting all my school chemistry 😄. Thanks for the advice as well, I'll have to look up that Tamiya light curing putty.

Alec, such a gorgeous aircraft which I also want to build. I got dissapointed to find out that the Hasegawa kit has raised lines and I wasn't yet willing to do the effort you are doing now.
Outstanding work, I admire the dedication you're pouring in this project. Thank you for recommending some scribing tools, mine got old and blunt and needed new ones.
One question: why use the saw for scribing? What is the advantage?
10 March, 06:25
![](/profiles/img/15497-946-s.jpg)
I missed this thread completely - outstanding work! Landing Gear, Cockpit, Flaps and much more just makes me feel like a beginner.
10 March, 08:06
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thanks you guys. Thomas, your work looks rather advanced to me 🙂 👍
Marius, this is my first scribing/riveting project on the entire model and I really enjoyed the process. Regarding my use of thin saw blade: on curved surfaces like the sides of a fuselage, I find it difficult to use the UMM scribers. It's hard to describe, you just have to experience it. To get a nice even panel line with the scriber, I apply several passes at low pressure. This is hard to do when you are following a curve because the scriber's "angle of attack" relative to the surface is important and must be continually maintained as you move the tool. Saw works much better and produces a comparable result. Cheers!
10 March, 19:18
![](/profiles/img/user-s.jpg)
I can only second Alecs arguments. Particularly if you have a panelline which was interrupted- by sanding for example - the saw can use the still existing grove as a guide much better than a scriber can.
10 March, 23:24
![](/profiles/img/69735-368-s.jpg)
Wow. What an odyssey of a build log. So detailed and painstakingly explained. Thank you. All aboard for the remainder of this journey.
11 March, 07:03
![](/profiles/img/13641-502-s.jpg)
Dat rivets look great, watching with envy. 👍
Thx for the Dymo tape hint, I have to test it, all these fancy modelling scotch tapes seem too thin for my taste.
11 March, 10:14
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thanks Gary, welcome to the odyssey. We should hit port soon 🙂
Łukasz, Dymo tape is pretty good and readily available, but couple words of caution: its adhesive is very aggressive and tends to leave residue on smooth surfaces, and it's not very "bendy". It sticks to Surfacer fine and comes off the same, but I had it peel off paint on smoother paint finish. The Carving Guide Tape (HIQPARTS CGT-6MM, No) is a better option IMHO but not sure how easily available.
11 March, 12:01
![](/profiles/img/13641-502-s.jpg)
Thx for the additional info. The transparent ones don't work for me at all - my eyesight is too poor 😉
But I think Dymo could be good for the basic rescribing, even before surfacer.
For the later corrections I have these green semi-transparent one, but its edges are not thick enough for me to do the long straight lines:
mojehobby.pl/product..-Edged-Tape-3mm.html
11 March, 12:16
![](/profiles/img/23186-383-s.jpg)
Very nice rescribing, Alec 👍 . As for dymo tape, I have the same experience as you.
Its nice to see, you are using Hauler products. This company is located about 500 meters from my home 🙂
11 March, 16:09
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thanks Clement and Nathan!
Łukasz - for sure, give it a try. For straight scribing, I like a firmer wide tape to keep the "straightness" and Dymo tape works great for that. It's also nice and thick for guiding the scribed. My only complaint, again, is that the adhesive sometimes stay put.
Jakube - thanks for encouragement. Do you mean PlusModel? Or does Hauler makes their PE? Either way, I am jealous 🙂 👍
12 March, 00:12
![](/profiles/img/23186-383-s.jpg)
Alec, i mean Hauler ( scribing template on your pic#110). They really make their PE. I saw it with my own eyes 🙂
12 March, 12:01
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Oh yeah, sorry! Got it. I have many Hauler PE sets (as well as their kits) in my stash 🙂
12 March, 12:30
![](/profiles/img/69549-161-s.jpg)
Alec, the longer I follow your work on the model, the more I like it. The care you take with all the details is admirable. 👍
In the time I have been building my models, I have come to the same experience as you. For restoring panel lines on curved surfaces of the model (like the fuselage), a razor saw is best. It's exactly as Michael Kohl writes a bit above.
To transcribe the lines on the model I use (among other things) rulers, which I made from an ordinary rolling ruler metal tape measure. I cut strips of different lengths from it. These strips are flexible and adapt easily to a curved surface. For even more flexibility, the strip can be cut lengthwise into two narrower strips.
13 March, 09:03
![](/profiles/img/50023-373-s.jpg)
This has turned in a very helpful thread with all the discussiond about scribing. I would like to share my own method for irregular surfaces. I'm using tape for electrical cable insulations together with a pointy tool. The tool is normally aimed at scribing access panels or doors, but I use it for larger panel lines too. Check photos #36 and #38 from this album:

Alec, you're doing top-notch work. The very fine and precise execution of all the details adds to the convincingness of the model. It's really hard to believe that this is a 1/72 scale model. 👍 👍 👍
12 July, 07:43
![](/profiles/img/14143-361-s.jpg)
A true masterpiece! I have looked at the current, new photos three times. And will definitely do it again. Great great great! Detailing, cleanliness, implementation and painting! 🙂🙂🙂

Yeah, I can only sign the last comments! Your careful preparation to allow a clean mounting pays back now 👍
Last week I saw a finished model of this kit at a local club meeting and it reminded me of your build.
12 July, 16:43
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thank you mates for your kind and encouraging feedback. This has been my longest continuous project to date ( too long imho). It's interesting to note that this 1972 tooling still has life in it (based on how many, even today, continue to be built). Certainly not comparable to today's fare, overall it's a very nice kit. Just have to finish few details as I plan to bring it to the IPMS-USA annual contest next week. Cheers.
12 July, 21:07
![](/profiles/img/14143-361-s.jpg)
Alec: Enjoy the exhibition. If I were in the jury, it would be the first place for me just because of the initiative and the skills in scratch building🙂. In my opinion, it is not really art to replace the half the model with brass, resin and 3D, but to create a masterpiece from a 50-year-old kit. 🙂
14 July, 18:50
![](/profiles/img/23938-707-s.jpg)
Thank you Bernhard for your kind comment, I really appreciate it 🙂. Getting a prize would be nice (I am as vain as the next guy), but I keep my expectations low. IPMS-USA judging focuses on build quality and execution, and my skills are not strong in this area. If two models are tied from this perspective, then the more complex one wins, but if there is a clean-built Neptune with no errors but no modifications next to mine, they win. A lot also depends on who shows up (I.e. the models on the table).
I am looking forward to the show as it's a great time to see many great builds in person, chat with fellow modelers and support the hobby. A big plus is that it's close to where I live, so no vendor room limit for this stash hoarder 😄. I will post pictures from the show when I get back.

Alec, I think the chances of success are good. Maybe luck will smile on you. In any case, I'll keep my fingers crossed 🙂
... whatever the outcome, enjoy the show!

Update 1, 08.04.24. Hi folks. I have become a beneficiary of Models for Heroes. I was sent a large box of models to build, plus some tools etc. This is the first of the models they sent me, that I have decided to build. This is a Canadian tank with a mine plough attached to the front. I have never built a Hobbyboss tank kit. But, so far, I am not that impressed. I have been working on the lower hull, wheels and tracks. The wheels had to be glued onto the torsion bar ends. There is no provision to have them rotate via poly caps. Even the drive sprockets do not rotate. The overall Green colour is the same as Tamiya XF-89 Dark Green 2, according to the instructions. So, that is what I have painted the lower hull and wheels with.
The tracks were of the individual link type. These had to be glued together, link by link. There was a jig on the sprue (not mentioned in instructions) to get the required gap between the track links. But I found that when I glued the links together with extra thin cement. The glue would just run down onto the jig and I would end up with the links stuck to the jig. So, I had to abandon using the jig, and just put the links together, flat on my bench. Instructions said about 80 links per side. But in the end, I used 81 links per side. I made 4 sections of track. Painted these sections with Mr Hobby Super Metallics Dark Iron. Once dry this was buffed up with a soft brush. I then painted the tops of the rubber track pads with Rubber Black. Once dry, I used super glue to join 2 track pieces together to form 1 length of track. These then had to be carefully wound around the wheels and glued into position with super glue. I was I could say this was simple. It wasn't. My track links would break in numerous places. These had to be glued back together with super glue. Then I had to glue parts of the tracks to the wheels and drive sprockets. The result is not the best looking pair of tracks. In fact, they are pretty crap. I fully expect them to break at some point in the future. Look at the picture of 2 tanks in the album. Top is this model, and bottom is my Tamiya Challenger 2. The Challenger 2 has wrap around vinyl tracks. Can you tell the difference? I can't. Sometimes good old vinyl tracks are good enough. Especially when most of them will be hidden behind side skirts.
Anyway, the kit has a fully detailed engine, and that is what I am doing next. Enjoy.

Update 2. 08.04.24. OK. I have finished the engine, apart from painting it. I must say. What a waste of time with all that PE etc. After test fitting the engine to the hull, I have found that you will hardly be able to see any of it. I suppose you could do an engine removal diorama. But that would mean cutting more of the engine deck hatches open. I won't be doing anything like that. I will take the engine out again for painting. That will be the next job. Enjoy.

Update 3. 14.04.24. Well, for what its worth. I have painted and installed the engine. But look at what will be viewed through the one open hatch on the engine deck? Total waste of time including a detailed engine. The only way to display it would be to cut the larger hatches open. Which I am not going to do. Also note the 4 large ejector pin marks in the top of the piece above the engine fan. Why couldn't they just put the ejector pins on the underside of the part? Way to go Hobbyboss. I am rapidly getting pissed off with Hobbyboss kits.

Update 4. 12.05.24. Hello again. It's been awhile since I posted an update on this one. I have finished the main hull of the tank. Painted the main green colour on the hull. I have also made up and painted the 2 tow cables, and fitted them to the hull. Next I have assembled the mine plough attachment. It is only placed in position in the photos. There is still a small chain to add to the mine plough after its been painted. I have shown in the photos the plough in 2 positions. Stowed in the up position, and deployed in the down position. Oh, and I have lost count how many times I have broke off one of those plough heads lights. Hobbyboss provide no clear glass for those headlights either. Plus no clear glass for the rear lights on the hull. Anyway, that's it for now. Enjoy.

Update 5. 26.05.24. Hi again. I have been working on the turret. Clear periscopes were installed first. Then the top and bottom of the turret joined together. I will cover the tops of the periscopes later with liquid masking fluid. The rear turret stowage bins were made up next. Plus the 3 jerry cans in their holders. This was then glued onto the back of the turret. I then made up the 2 side pieces of extra armour. These had individual panels of PE that had to be bent and then glued onto the top of these armour pieces. Then the extra turret armour pieces were glued onto the sides of the turret. This was not easy at all. In the end I had to resort to using super glue. Then I made up the gun mantlet and main gun. The gun does not move, and there is no breach detail for inside the turret. I am rapidly going off Hobbyboss kits now lol. That is all for now. Enjoy.

Update 6. 01.07.24. I have now finished the build and the main bit of painting. The next thing to do is spray on a gloss coat ready for decals. Very few decals to apply. 3 rings around the barrel. 2 small plaques on the mine plough and a chevron on each side skirt. I had to scratch build the RH turret hatch ring because mine was missing from the kit. I cut a replacement ring out of plastic card. Now that its painted, you cannot really tell that its a scratch built ring. Happy with that. Enjoy.

Update 7. 13.07.24. Not long to go now. Finished all the main painting. Then applied a gloss coat. Then put the decals on. All 7 of them lol. 3 stripes on the gun. A Black Chevron either side and 2 small plaques on the mine plough. Then a Florymodels Dark Dirt Clay Wash was applied all over the model. Once dry, this was rubbed off with a paper towel and cotton buds. This left dirt and grime in all the panel lines, nooks and crannies. After that, a matt coat was applied. Then I did some dry brushing with a polished metal colour. This simulated scratches and scuffs. After that, I rubbed in some dirt and sand pigments from a Tamiya Weathering Set. Then I rubbed on some rust pigments in places. Especially on the mine plough blades. Then I put on some Ammo Mig Enamel Wet Mud. Before this dried, I stippled some Ammo Mig Earth Pigment. This made it look like dried on caked mud. Once all that has dried, I will spray a heavily thinned coat of an Ammo Mig Dust Colour on the bottom parts of the model. This should simulate dust build up from the ground up. Then a final matt coat will be applied, and that should get us to the finish line. Enjoy.

Update 8. 15.07.24. Hi folks. Well, its time to call this one complete. I finished it off with a light coat of Ammo Mig Dust colour paint. I sprayed a thin coat of this along the bottom half of the tank and at the front and back lower portions. I have made a reveal video that I will put on my Youtube channel shortly. Once that is uploaded, I will place a link here. Then mark the project as completed. Thanks for all the interest in my builds so far. Its much appreciated.
