I agree with Neuling, this is another gem you are showing here, I again really like the dynamic pose and the way you took the pics, awesome stuff 👍

I think you should have some fun and use an image editor to erase the stand from at least some of the photos. 🙂 As time goes by, perhaps the photos will be what you have in store.

This project has been waiting long enough, now the time has come! The "shell", seen here, is quickly put together, the glued seams are still wet, so to speak. I plan to show the A90 in a proper dio - gliding just above the water!

I just remembered, I have this kit in my stash.
Are those windows on the side? Like on passenger jets?
7 July, 18:13
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
If this was some kind of passenger aircraft, I would book a flight for sure. 🙂
I will drill the windows and fill them with Krystal Klear.

![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Thank you both for interest and comments! Well, I will think over with that windows.... Thank you for the link!
8 July, 06:46
![](/profiles/img/116815-805-s.jpg)
I stand corrected. I had originally not seen the windows. Thanks, Skyhiker.
Plenty of interior photos here: flickr.com/photos/la..597/with/45021731405
And the last surviving example (per Wikipedia) is here: museum-vmf.ru/
Even though the appropriate page won't load here, a photo displays in the top-of-page banner rotation.

![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
I agree, what pictures! The question of the windows should now also be answered "from the inside" as well. Thanks for these excellent links, mates!

A few new pictures here too: the finished pre-shading has shown a few touch-up needs, but tomorrow I want to be able to apply the surface colour!
11 July, 15:21
![](/profiles/img/user-s.jpg)
Probably too late, but that project would have been perfect to try a levitation display.

![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
I think it's a really wonderful idea.... A few Star Wars themes are in the making, possibly here: I would also like to see a Tie-Fighter hovering over this base.
A nice encounter - magnets are actually being used in this project! Since I want to show the "Orlyonok" gliding over a water surface as well as standing still, I have prepared two versions of the props. In order to be able to change them stably, I attached magnets to the axis of rotation. The one on the engine was inserted through a hole from the outside. It sits on the tip of a toothpick, which has been inserted through the hole in the inside of the engine. The magnet now sits exactly in the centre of the engine diameter. The second magnet only had to be glued to the two ends of the propeller axles. Now, it works perfectly with a soft "click"! 🙂
12 July, 06:56
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
The Oryonok still looks a bit 'artificial', but in principle shows its surface colours, which will hopefully breathe a little life into it, are the traces of use and wear that I will still apply. The windows on the fuselage will of course also be drilled out and filled with clear white glue.
At the same time, the water base is now being worked on. This time I'm using a light filler on a polystyrene base as a base for this, with Vallejo water gel on top.
The magnetically interchangeable ahrwerk and propeller have worked - which is great news of course!
17 July, 17:34
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
A few pictures of the water base in the making: I'm using a new material to build up the water surface. This so-called 'light filler' dries within 24 hours and is easy to shape with the appropriate tools - here with a simple brush

Just a suggestion, Roland - an ekranoplan flying above the sea 'irons out' the waves under its wings in a characteristic manner:

![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Robert, thank you for that important hint, I wasn't aware of this!
18 July, 14:47
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Robert, your hint made me to rethink and rebuild the whole thing a bit: the strip of water flown over is no longer deeply furrowed, but has been flattened - the picture material helped a lot.
You can see the whole thing now primed with Tamiya acrylic paint and coloured once, tomorrow transparent water gel from AK will be applied...
18 July, 18:18
![](/profiles/img/48972-166-s.jpg)
Water looks already like on these photos, Roland. I cannot wait to see the plane levitating above the waves...

With these pictures I open the book report on Roden's Junkers D.1: I tried to extend the interior with some steel wire, the seat belts are from Eduard. For the detailing I downloaded the very interesting building instructions from Wingnut Wings for the large D.1 in 1:32, which is quite helpful if you want to have a good documentation as a basis for detailing. I'm also going to realise one of the WW variants, which I immediately liked: all in Dural/ NMF with only a minimal set of markings.

![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
Watching!
I have done the short fuselage already, I hope one day I can do the long one too.
Is the engine painting finished? I can recommend the WNW manual for this, still available on WNW page.
8 July, 20:44
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Thanks for the tip - it's definitely a good one! The printed WNW instructions are next to me, so I want to use a little oily black on the top of the engine and add a little "brass"... But not only WNW instructions, also your excellent work is my reference.

![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
The fuselage of the D.1 is now closed, the only thing to be careful of was not to damage the corrugated sheet metal joints. A related issue arises with the leading edges of the wings: in my opinion, the prototype shows a continuous line around the leading edge.... this will be difficult to depict: I will try to get close to this with careful sanding and the same amount of reworking with a scalpel.
11 July, 07:09
![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
Yes to clean the wing seem is not that esay. I must admit I used also wings from another kit after I was not happy with the first try. I have both the long and short fuselage kits and the wings are the identical. But that shifts the problem only to a later date, when I will build the long one. A new Part PE set is waiting too 🙂
12 July, 16:49
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Thank you for your words, mates! - I completely agree that this is not an easy topic! My approach, which you can see started here, is to work on the front edge of the profile with a triangular file. I didn't even try to bring the corrugated sheet metal runs of the top and bottom together - that would be far too small for me - but simply used the file edge many times.... Well, in my opinion it looks at least a little better now than before, so I'll try to make it a little more precise....

The Alclad metal colours mercilessly bring out all the flaws and imperfections, especially when everything has already been trimmed to a high gloss in preparation for applying the decals like here! The Wingnut Wings instructions describe an effect called 'tiger stripes' on the wing sheeting, which I recreated using various aluminium and dural colours.
18 July, 11:56
![](/profiles/img/21997-347-s.jpg)
The stripes are great - can be noticed, but both shades still looks like aluminium which it was.
18 July, 14:53
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Thank you very much, mates!
The opinion on the 'tiger stripes' really really pleases me in a very motivating way!

Here are first pictures of these lovely kit. Again, Airfix has to be praised for parts fit, sound general layout and crispness of detail.
To make things not all too cheap I got a cockpit set and a new canopy from Pavla; you can see the Resin being fixed to the plastic fuselage halves. The Resin-seats got further harnesses made of painted Tamiya masking tape.

Thank you Michael! The "Gnat" is quite a small and neat aircraft, no wonder that´s its 1:72 representation seems to be a fast build. There is not much more to be assembled; just some cleaning up of the few glue seams- and then it´s time for Alclad.
7 April 2015, 06:40
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Indeed, Michael...
Some little progress here. Gunzes Gloss Black paved the way for Alclad White Aluminum; next step will be masking the Alu to get the glossy Red on the surfaces.
8 May 2015, 18:09
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Some steps further... Decals have been applied on a coat of Gunze Clear Gloss Acrylic, next the surfaces will be sealed by a second layer of the same.
Some corrections with dry brush have to be made, but the Gnat is undeniably nearing completion... 🙂

Hallo Stefan, danke für Deinen Kommentar! Die nächste Gnat- und die kommt bestimmt und in 1:48- lässt höchstwahrscheinlich alle Farbe Farbe sein und erscheint in glänzendem Schwarz 🙂
That project is finished, the new picture show you the final result: all in all a marvelous, precious and trouble free kit, well worth being build!
Thank you all for comments and interest!

Model seems nice. do you also have pics from the underside? I've thought I saw some silvering or is it he work of the light at the XP-decals in the orange parts. I do have the same on my Blohm and Voss, it seems like silvering, but is a strange effect with the light, and I wanted to know wether it will be fixed by adding some clear varnish over them...
3 June 2015, 10:17
![](/profiles/img/10148-258-s.jpg)
Thank you all for your kind words!
Bart, I have added photos from the Gnat´s underside. You have been right: the first layer of Gunze gloss clear as a preparation for the decals was not enough to prevent a kind of silvering, but the following layers did seal the decals and stop that effect.

Au contraire, Robert. I have yet to try my hand at a bare metal finish, or indeed add fine antennae or rigging. I've only tried a few PE extras, and still only add paint by brush. The finishes you achieve are superb and thus inspirational, and there is never a hint of dodgy filler anywhere 👍👍👍

And Eclipse doesn't seem to be such a past build either 😛
