Bergepanther Ausf. D, Dragon kit Panther Ausf. D, Fat Frog Models tracks and some scratchbuild details to present an early Bergepanther.
An easy self made conversion for an interesting recovery vehicle. I will add drawbars, a rack with a timber and the wooden hatch above the turret opening.

Taking up one of those firstt row seats on this one! These Fat Frog tracks are really neat, currently using a set on a King Tiger... Looking forward to more of the scratchbuilt addons 👍

You're welcome Tom B. 🙂

Indeed the Fat Frog tracks are really nice, but a lil bit tricky to remove all the printing supports mainly on the inner side of the tracks.

WIP on my Bergepanther conversion. Tow bars and wooden beam added.
So far I have no references for early Bergepanther using the wooden beam, but let's assume it is a field modification.

Did you paint the metal pieces to look like metal or are they real metal pieces?
11 February, 20:38

Jennifer, I gues you asked about the enging grill covers. These are brass photo etch parts from a Flyhawk PE Set.
11 February, 20:51

Yep, they're nicely done.

Isn´t the rubber on the wheels a bit too clean? But nevertheless a beauty of couse 🙂
Did you use a template for the rubber? It looks so evenly painted. Mine is most times a mess 🙁
5 August, 14:48
Christian Bruer
Thx subotai for your kind comment and your thoughts 🙂👍
I'd like to present mostly dry mud what stuck to the tracks and wheels, so I kept the rubber cleaner than the rest. So far following some reference photos I used to follow.
About the paintwork, I did not used a template but painted the rubber free hand along the edges of the wheels.
5 August, 16:37
subotai
Ok alright, then it must be a good edge or your ruhige hand 🙂

Finally regarded as complete. My first attempt at a 4 engined bomber and my first attempt at rigging (aerial wires).

The aircraft denoted here is from 1943. PH-H (LM321) was the Squadron marking of 12 Sqn RAF. LM321 flew with a number of Squadrons including 460, 550 and 100. It was finally lost on the night of 10/11 June 1944 over Acheres.

Two pilots that flew in PH-H with 12 Squadron were Flight Leader Sqn Ldr FS Knight and Pilot Officer Thomas Forbes.
Thomas Forbes flew PH-H on 22 June 1943 on an operation to Mulheim whilst serving with 12 Sqn C Flight. Plt Offr Forbes was killed in action on an operation to Turin on 12 July 1943.
C Flight leader Sqn Ldr Knight and his crew failed to return from an operation to Cologne on 28 June 1943. Four are buried in Dutch cemeteries and three are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Their average age was 23.

3d printing, I wouldn't know where to start. Is the ami 6 a file you found online?
19 June, 19:39
Greg Baker
I did find it online, but was a little disappointed with the quality. It required a lot (and will need more) work to be able to print it. I mainly have to increase the thickness of the rear trunk area. The strange overhang roof in the rear needs to be sturdier as well.
19 June, 19:59
Alex K
Can't miss this...
19 June, 20:02
Greg Baker
The second printing went much better. I made a mistake though, I forgot to add the support to both sides of the rear roof struts. Luckily one side seems to be strong enough to hold everything, and with a little paint I don't think the thin part will be visible.

Good timing. After a bit of a summer break spent watching football, olympics, and playing video games with my son... I just started back at the modelling desk. After clearing up a couple of other, smaller, Tintin-related projects, I'm almost ready to tackle this one again.
21 August, 14:09
Greg Baker
With the Hawker Hart off the bench and on the shelf… I guess it's time to tackle this one again. Getting the colour right was tricky. I finally settled on a 10:5:1 ratio of Tamiya XF-2 White, X-14 Sky Blue and XF-18 Medium Blue. Not perfect, but close enough I think.
18 September, 05:30
Cuajete
I like this color, Greg 👍
18 September, 17:44
Greg Baker
Thanks Cuajete. It might be a LITTLE bit darker than I was going for, but close enough for me. It looked lighter in the airbrush cup, but I suspect the darker undercoat is at play here.
18 September, 17:54
Greg Baker
Got the windows in place. I used an old iPhone screen protector plastic cut to fit. For the interior windows I glued it them in place with some very small dabs of CA glue and then a brush of Future. However, for the open doors, I used the thinner "peel off plastic" that's supposed to keep the iPhone protector nice and clear until it's applied. Then I dipped them in Future and applied them directly to the doors. Let's hope there's enough adhesion once the Future dries. It SHOULD work, since I did the same thing on my Tintin Model T project for the windscreen. But that was flat… these have a bit of a curve to them.
20 September, 06:06
Greg Baker
Looks like the windows are holding. Next up… painting some of the details.

I just realized that I've been looking at the colour scheme from the album - specifically the scene that takes place at night where Professor Calculus is taken down the stairs and dump unceremoniously into the front seat of the Citron Ami 6 by a rogue wheelchair, blasting the doctor out the passenger door in the process. However... since it takes place at night, the colouring is different (i.e. darker) than it should be in the light of day. Now I feel like I screwed up the paint job!

To be honest with you Ben I haven't ever built a Mach2 kit.
I'm going off what my best mate said as he has 2 stalled builds he'll never complete and I haven't got the gutts to get 1 of them and try it myself.

Having said that I do have the Mach2 L-1329 Jetstar in the stash so I must be atleast slightly mad enough to try it!

Makes me wonder, what happens next... You've managed this skeleton kit absolutely perfectly. Chapeau bas!
16 September, 17:10
Michael Kohl
How - if all all - did you prep the metal?
16 September, 17:48
tyu
Nice, VERY nice! How did you attach the metal parts: glueing or soldering? Very clean build, impressive1
16 September, 18:07
CaptGPF
Here's a dumb question - how do you keep the paint from chipping off of the PE? I tried spraying Mr Surfacer on it, prior to painting, but it still chips very easily.
16 September, 18:11
Lorraine Lin
Thank you everyone!
@Michael Kohl, this kits are from Jasmine Model. The PEs are great, while the instructions a little bit difficult to understand.
@tyu, I used instant adhesive to glue them together. Some small parts, I used UV glue.
@CaptGPF, I used Mr. Color C series to paint it directly after assembly, keep the paint as thin as possible. But yes, it still chips easily, try not to touch it : )

Great project!
As I build some Stripdown aircraft already I thought about this one too, but the kit is hard to get here and pricey so it was only an idea.

@CaptGPF You can apply Mr.MetalPrimer from Gunze first. It is a acrylic clear coat which hardens to a thin robust layer even if applied with a brush. I prefer the glass bottle over the rattle can.
SF-242 Mr. Metal Primer, Mr.COLOR , Lacquer, 40ml
17 September, 14:19
Skyhiker
Lorraine what are you using for a skin on the fuselage?
17 September, 17:26
Michael Kohl
I have used Mr Metal Primer for a while too with satisfying results. Paint adheres much better.
17 September, 17:31
Michael Kohl
Copper foil plating and going for a french version. This is getting better every day. 🙂
17 September, 17:34
bughunter
There is a newer version with an additional "-R" on the name, I don't know what was changed. I still use the original one.
Tamiya has also a product for this (have not tried it): 204 Metal Primer, Tamiya Gloss, Enamel, 40ml
17 September, 19:24
Mr D
Now Lorraine....That is dedication to accuracy 😲.
This is why the Chinese were making Ming vases.. while the rest of the world made clay pots 🤣.
Very talented n clever 💯%
17 September, 19:55
Lorraine Lin
Thank you Mates!

@skyhiker, It is 0.02mm cooper foil, and it needs to be annealed first (>650 degree C, a cigar lighter or gas cooker is good enough.)

@Micheal and bughunter, thank you for the suggestion, I just ordered Mr. Metal Primer-R.
18 September, 02:30
Lorraine Lin
Thank you Mr D.
18 September, 02:31
Lorraine Lin
@bughunter, I just received the new "-R" version. The new label says "improved transparency".
19 September, 10:44
Skyhiker
The rivets on the copper look a bit strange because they are not in alignment with the plane's ribs. On a real aircraft wouldn't they be?
19 September, 11:07
Lorraine Lin
@skyhiker, thank you for the comment. This is to verify my idea, I am making a new skin. And will try to make the rivets to align with the ribs. Thank you again.
19 September, 11:23
bughunter
Thank you for the info!
I hope it still sticks to metal like the original.
19 September, 11:42
Mr James
Outstanding work. This goes beyond modelling to precise engineering.
19 September, 11:43
bughunter
Wnat to mention another usage:
The Mr.MetalPrimer can also be used, if the metal should not be painted. It protects the metal surface and prevents tarnishing and oxidation over time.
19 September, 11:49
Alexander Grivonev
Additionally to the metal primer you can treat your PE parts with a fiberglass eraser pen beforehand. It cleans the metal from the oxide layers and roughens it up just a tiny amount to create perfect conditions for paint adhesion.
19 September, 13:13
Dominik Weitzer
Wow. what a great work. excellent!
19 September, 14:08
CaptGPF
Fantastic progress! It's a pity that the beautiful framing is covered up. Did you press the foil against the kit to get the detailing?
19 September, 15:34
Kesa Tiho
Absolutely stunning, alas i cant help but feel suspicious
19 September, 15:43
Alexander Grivonev
What makes you feel suspicious? @Kesa
19 September, 16:32
Kesa Tiho
I cant put my finger on it but it seems too perfect. Too good to be true
19 September, 17:16
Robert Podkoński
If you look closer, you will spot a few imperfections, Kesa (both on the side of the Jasmine model kit, and in the assembly). Notwithstanding, is a fantastic piece of workmanship.
19 September, 17:26
Alexander Grivonev
I agree with Robert, everything looks authentic and not "doctored". I absolutely do not want to take away from Lorraine's craftsmanship, but there is nothing "too good to be true" about this. Great idea, very well executed, just fantastic craftsmanship. Every step is plausible and well documented and I don't even know how or why you would fake something like this 😄
19 September, 17:53
Skyhiker
Well for 300 Euros per kit some people might have to fake it. That's a lot of money.
19 September, 18:14
Alexander Grivonev
but faked HOW is what I wonder about. CGI? Yeah, it looks impressive, but it is still a kit. You cut the parts out, you assemble them and you paint the whole thing, no black magic to it really. It would be much more difficult to "fake" it imho
19 September, 18:24
bughunter
@Skyhiker Do you mean 300€ for the whole project, with the Eduard kits and accesories?
The Jasmine Hellcat can be found from below 130€ from aliexpress (ok tax and co needs to be added) and around 150€ in ebay, but not 300! List price at Jasmin own shop is 169$
19 September, 18:31
CaptGPF
@Kesa - if you think this is too perfect, wait till you see some of the other posters like Neuling, Mr James, Markus and Jörg (to name a few)- their stiff will also blow your mind!!!! However, Lorraine is definitely the God of PE!!!!!

@alexander grivionev i would say its just a pre built set but because of the WIP photos i cant :/
19 September, 20:34
Kesa Tiho
I didnt mean my comment as an insult to her and her ability to build, paint etc builds. I just found her build oddly good
19 September, 20:36
Mr D
Kesa, sometimes things can come across wrong way, so it's best to keep comment positive or just hold back... Everyone including yourself has nice experience here.
The site is a community forum and not competition ground.
There are people who are starting out ...brush painting over sticky fingerprint's.
Also there are amazingly talented artists like Lorraine here.
Everybody work n project is important to them, it's the enjoyment of the hobby above all, as you know for the nice work you have created yourself... Hopefully subject will move on now..🤣
19 September, 22:08
Alexander Grivonev
What war mate, we are just having a chat 😄
20 September, 03:49
Alexander Grivonev
Do they come pre built? I don't know..
20 September, 03:49
Lorraine Lin
I believe that the friends in this community enjoy the process of building models, the satisfaction of removing the painting masks, and the interaction and sharing with mates here. Rather than showing off a pre-built model. I joined this community a little over a month ago, and I've seen many excellent works here, learned a lot of building techniques, and most importantly, had the opportunity to communicate with mates from all over the world. I feel connected with everyone, and I will continue to complete this project. Thank you for all your comments and support.
20 September, 08:36
Kesa Tiho
I feel bad now
20 September, 08:54
Lorraine Lin
@CaptGPF, yes, I press the copper foil against the kits to get the shape and details. I don't know "rubbing" is the right word the describe the process. And I plan to cover half of the fuselage. So it is called "cut away": )
20 September, 08:54
Lorraine Lin
@Kesa, Don't be. Following your aircraft carrier project: )
20 September, 09:10
Lorraine Lin
I applied Mr. Metal Primer-R as mates suggested here, it works well. The only thing is the surface is a little bit sticky even after 12 hrs. I guess this is how it prevents the painting from chipping.
20 September, 09:14
Kesa Tiho
@lorraine i can see, i feel honoured to have one of my builds be followed by a skillful builder like you
20 September, 09:48
CaptGPF
@Kesa - I don't think anyone took your post as inflammatory or starting a war - it's nice having conversations like this - and I think it's the best compliment once can receive when someone says "it looks too good". Be yourself!

Propeller looking 👍 nice.
Care you planning to cover it all ??
Or have some of the model skeletal for a display-cutaway effect??
28 September, 14:07

Thank you Mate!
Robert and Mr D, I will not cover it all, maybe some part of the wing. Will leave it as cutaway effect.
28 September, 14:59

By the way: will your book be available in Telford in November?
10 June, 08:04

Hi Michael, I'm not sure. It should be out by then but I don't know if any sellers will be stocking it. I live in Australia unfortunately, so Telford is well outside my maximum range 😢

Added the large control wheel to the pilot's cockpit from soldered wire and heat curved sprue. I like the little brass hub in the middle 🙂
15 June, 09:52
Skyhiker
You seem to have really good control over your soldering. What tools do you have? That control wheel is impressive.
15 June, 16:59
gorby
The many years training to be a jeweler probably helps. 😄
15 June, 17:07
William Adair
@Skyhiker I have an inexpensive soldering iron from an electronics store. It is nothing special, but the best thing I have is liquid soldering flux. Using that allows the solder to grab the surface and stick without requiring too much heat or flooding the area with solder.

@gorby Being a jeweller helped at first. But now I am finding that the modelmaking is helping me be a better jeweller! 👍
23 June, 12:51

7 July, 21:16

Wow, what scale👌, l struggle to build a 1:72 without breaking of a tail wheel or antenna 🤣.
Really nice n interesting subject 👍👍
7 July, 23:13

Where do you get your blueprints?
7 July, 23:17
William Adair
@Michael Kohl, I made an album about the wheel back in January, showing the stages of construction. Spoked wheel test, 1/144 | Album by F_IV
@Skyhiker, Windsock Datafiles provide the best drawings. I also use the 3-view drawings from the Wingnut Wings kit for some areas.

You're a wizard, William... this is all far beyond my sight abilities, not only my skills...
24 September, 10:55
Ludvík Kružík
Phenomenal project! What you are doing here in this mini scale is amazing. 👍 You don't see this kind of detail work too often even on larger models.
I suppose giving fleas horseshoes isn't a challenge for you. 😉
24 September, 11:04
Alec K
Excellent progress. I have finally received, and am about halfway through reading, William's excellent book. To those interested in how he does what you see in this album, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. I am certainly planning to incorporate many of his techniques into my own scratchbuilt projects. How he does what he does in 1:144 scale is still a mystery to me (although the book supplies hints 😉), but they are applicable across any scale really. Well done!
