In the Yom Kippur War the 7th armoured brigade, under the command of Colonel Avigador Ben Gal, was stationed at the defense line of the
northern part of the Golan Heights, sharing the defense with the 188th armoured brigade, where if successfully repulsed heavy attacks by much
larger Syrian forces.
At 08.00 hrs on the 7th October the Syrians went on the attack again in the Valley of Tears.
The 7th brigade was soon fighting at ranges that varied from point-blank to 2.500m.
The attack lasted some four hours and the Syrians withdrew, leaving more mangeld armour on the valley floor.
At 22.00 hrs the Syrians launched a night attack in Colonel Ben Gal´s central sector preceded by massive artillery bombardment.
The fighting reached a climax at about 01.00 hrs on the 8th October and then abruptly ceased as the Syrians scurried about the battlefield,
attempting to evacuate their wounded and their damaged tanks.
The Israelis laid down heavy artillery fire, as their own tanks were refulled and reloaded.
The Syrians attacked again at 04.00 hrs on the 8th October and, as the sky grew lighter, an increasingly nightmarish scene was revealed
in the Valley of Tears, many of the abandoned or wrecked Syrian Tanks and APC´s were between or behind the Israeli positions.
The extent of the 7th armoured brigade plight was all too evident and Ben Gal ordered the brigade to fire at every moving target in sight.
The Syrians were suffering too.
