Building

Album image #1
Just got started. Removed the pieces from the tree, mounted them in toothpicks with blutack and painted them mouse grey matt (Revel 36147) with a paint brush as it was the only matt grey I have.

Album image #2
I mixed red and yellow to achieve matt orange for the space suits. I painted the details on the cockpit black with sort-of-dry-brushing.

Album image #3
Assembled the cockpit. I sanded the parts where I was gluing as I was using Revell Contacta and it's my understanding it needs to contact the plastic to fuse them together. I used CA for the pilots.

Assembled the two big halves of the airplane with too much Revell Contacta glue.

Album image #10
Evaluating masking the cockpits instead of the windows. I put some paper tissue inside to push the tape against the sides and keep it in place.

Album image #15
Adding the exhausts. I'm not sure what's the best way to make them look like they are at full throttle.

Album image #16
The landing gear doors will need their hinges removed to be glued closed.

Album image #17
Closed landing gears.

Album image #18
The front landing gear will be more challenging as I have to cut them longitudinally (instead of removing a small hinge).

Album image #19
It's really annoying how they add captions on the outside, right next to some raised detail.

Album image #20
Nose cone, inlet cones and front landing gear (closed). I need better lighting.

Album image #21
All pieces glued in.

Album image #22
Trying to hide the crimes, making new ones. I'm disliking raised details, sanding them off it'll be painful.

Album image #23
First time applying primer.

Album image #24
Trying to make that washed-off grey to paint the SR-71 by using a piece that I'm discarding.

Album image #25
The washed-off gray looked horrible, so, I didn't even took a pic of it and painted it mat black

Album image #26
I think the cockpit turned out quite well. Last glimpse before covering it with the canopy.

Using chalk pastels for the washed off gray. Didn't work, the mat transparent cover dissolved it

Fresh decals.

Album image #31
Decals and after this, weathering using sort of dot-filter with oil paints.

Spanjaard: I just learned that there's one in the UK, so, I'm definitely going to visit. I remember seeing one in Florida and the day I visit, for some reason, the fence around it was gone and I didn't even know I wasn't supposed to walk up to it and touch it, so, I did. This was in the 90s. When I went back, it was fenced around.

you were really lucky! you can get close to the one in Duxford, but guards may not be probably like if you do touch it 😉
The collection is fantastic. I was there from opening to closing time to get as much detail pictures as I could....but even without the camera, I would have spent the whole day there.

If you have not seen it, RAF museum London should be quite good too. I was there 10 years ago, but I think they have changed it later. they seem to have now a B-17 that i do not remember seeing in '07, and the Me-262 (my favourite) is now in Cosford RAF museum.
