Revell Sukhoi Su-27 - Build

Album image #1
The basic bits.

Album image #2
Album image #3
Album image #4
These are very shallow panel lines.

Album image #5
Album image #6
Album image #7
Album image #8
Not the best I have ever seen but pretty good for a budget kit. Internal edges a bit soft.

Album image #9
Which scheme ? Its a tough choice. I think I will just buy another one....

Album image #10
Album image #11
Nice little included extra with the seat belts.

Album image #12
Album image #13
Quite a nice little option for the seat belts if you are not using the pilot. Nice decals for the dash.

Album image #14
Album image #15
Trying to mix those very subtle colours from my limited pallete

Album image #16
Album image #17
The air intakes are a bit fiddly but line up very well.

Album image #18
Album image #19
Almost ready to get some paint on.

Album image #20
Bit too much thinner!! Actually quite nice for a weathered/faded paint look.

Album image #21
Better. Two coats of the green, one coat of grey and blue. Blue is a bit darker than intended.

Album image #22
Glad those panel lines made it through ok.

Album image #23
Some nice detail inside the engines. Is this to keep birds out ?

Album image #24
Album image #25
Some basic colours onto the engines.

Album image #26
Album image #27
Fairly pleased with the metallic finish. About 75/25% enamel/thinner mix for the metals..

Album image #28
Trying to match the greens.

Album image #29
Always a bit scary doing the panel lines. A highly dilute black 75%/brown 25% thinner mix.

Album image #30
Hope this is gonna work out...

Album image #31
Yeah - not too bad. But there are a hugh number of lines on this bird!!

Album image #32
Several days later...Wow that took ages. Maybe six hours...

Album image #33
Just had to put in another one after all that effort!! Pleased with this.

Album image #34
Getting a bit ahead ofmyself. Dry fit of everything so far. Nice!!

Album image #35
Making a start on the engines. Just thinner with a hint of colour. Mmmm, started melting the varnish.

Album image #36
Do put in the main undercarriage before you fix the air intakes. The little hydraulic half way up the leg is very traicky to fit and must line up with the support hole in the air intake assembly c

Album image #37
The horseshoe brake on the front UC is very delicate but accurate. Shame no clear perspex for the landing lights!

Album image #38
The front UC in situ. There is quite a pronounced forward angle which is not obvious from the instuctions.

Album image #39
Looks great in situ.

Album image #40
Making a start on the weapons. A very good range of options is supplied.

Album image #41
My selection of weapons.

Album image #42
Loading up.

Album image #43
A hugh number of decals supplied. I think I got most of them.

Which scheme to choose? I like them both.

Toss a coin ? 😄
Think I prefer the top one 🙂

I also prefer the top one, but it is something personal😉

I think when you get to the point to decide, it will be about how how masking you wanna do 😄
13 September 2018, 12:40
Mike Daniels
Yep I think it will be the top one. Its a bit more interesting. The Revell scheme is a bit different having a light grey rather than the light green. Strangely no one seems to have painted up the Revell 'B' scheme.

There seems to be minor variation in schemes even within the same squadron. I wonder if the pilots have a say in the matter ?

they are both beautiful. i would say that differences may depend in the time in service, and maybe different batches of paint, rather than choice from the pilots😉

Mike, have you seen the following scheme?

Thats a new one on me Cuajete. Is that the 'digital' scheme ? Have seen a few mates trying this using masking tape. Get some good results but pretty time consuming. Nice to know that a decal set is available.

Cuajete
Mike, for a digital scheme, I found the following masks: scalemates.com/kits/1024150-..asks-fm72-003-digital-su-27s

But, you can see another masks in the following link: SCM Search: 1:72 su-27 mask*

Ronan
Mike, The blue one is the most attractive if you enjoy paint job, without a doubt 🙂
14 September 2018, 13:03
Mike Daniels
Hi Ronan. I think for this build I will go for the 'B' scheme. I do like that 'ultra blue' scheme as well but it will have to wait. I see a little fleet of Su-27s appearing on my wish list. Cheers!

Thanks CUajete. Gosh - you are spoilt for choice!! That looks pretty challenging!

Have managed to track down a shot of the actual aircraft 'No.54' at czechairspotters.com. Fab photos. I think I can see where Revell got their schemes from.

Hi Bart. Yes absolutely. It would seem that nearly every aircraft has a customised scheme. I will need a very big shelf!

1 and 3 schemes, Bart 🙂 👍

Yes 1 and 3 stand out. But 2 has its merits.

Nice to see somebody still mixing colours, instead buying every possible variation out there 🙂
20 September 2018, 11:36

Cant afford to but all of them Spanjaard!! And sometimes you just cant get 'that' colour. Its a pretty subjective thing.

Hi Es-haq Khosravi.

Found this very useful site for very high res photos of a Sukhoi which is great for getting at the details. Click that zoom button!!

I see how you had a tough decision as to which scheme. Fading plays a huge factor in the choice. They are both interesting to say the least but agree on the choice you made.
21 September 2018, 12:07
Mike Daniels
Hi Bryn. Yes, so spoilt for choice!! I have gone for a 'work horse' scheme rather than 'exhibition' colours ? I can see this will be a growing collection. Weathering I will keep fairly light as these are relatively new aircraft that wont have seen a lot of action. Just might need a wash.

Got some colours on. Glad the panel lines have come through two layers of enamel and a layer of gloss varnish. Had my doubts about that...

Nicely done mike, brushwork is better than my 🙂

Hi Augie and thanks. Not sure about that. I thought your recent Flanker build was really impressive. There do seem to be a lot more decals in the Revell kit? They took about 8 hours all told!!

Augie
Hi Mike, Thanks 🙂 Decals wise, most likely both sets I used for mine were short on stencils etc so went with what I had.
