An acrylic layer should be enough to protect to enamel paint. I can think of 2 options. Either the acrylic layer was too thin or it hadn't cured enough.
The zero looks too nice to cancel for this. Can't you strip some paint and try again?

Regarding your question, enamel wash on acrylic paint should be safe as long as the paint had enough time to dry. Some say 24 hours, some 48. Some also mention factors like temperature and humidity as well.
Good luck with your next try!

Live and Learn,we all been there ! Lesson learned and you know what not to do. Personally I think it looks good, kinda weathered by salt water air, gives it that rustic authentic look !

I use solely enamel paints from Humbrol and Revell. I discovered that if I used varnish (the ordinary Humbrol or Revell enamel varnish) that is has the tendency to come of because of the white spirit. So what I do is to make a pintype wash directly on the paintjob without using varnish first after letting it dry for 48 hours. As long as you do the pinwash in one go into the recesses without rubbing your brush all over the place it will not damage the paint.
Also using gloss enamel and letting that dry first is a better canvas to let the wash run into the recesses than a matt paint.
I also used water based oil paints for doing the washes. It really works and it has no bad effects on oil based paints whatsoever but it doesn't run as easily as enamel paints diluted with white spirit.

Thanks for the feedback. Shinden arrives in a few days. We'll see how this one goes 🙂

about washes, i use flory models ones. it is clay disolved in water, so it can be used over acrylic and over enamel without any risk 🙂 i decided for a it after almost a total write off on my NXR-750 due to white spirit eating the plastic......

I plan to experiment with chalk/clay washes. I don't use airbrush so I have to check if don't simply brush those away when applaying varnish.

that must be tested indeed.

Album info

Dunno if should even show off this disaster of a paint job. Basically used Tamiya enamel wash on enamel paint... I coated the paint with acrylic varnish beforehand hoping that it will prevent the wash from damaging it. Sadly, it didn't work. Planning to use acrylic paints on next model, so I hope it won't happen again. Any suggestions for using Tamiya enamel wash on acrylic paintjob would be greatly appreciated. Peace 🙂
