1/700 USS Essex (CV-9)

 

 

This drawing from the Raven books shows the as-built island configuration, including the original lower location for the SC radar. It was raised on a tower before the ship went into combat. 

This is the island assembled using the kit parts. The parts that will be replaced are painted red. 

Here the island has had the kit parts removed and the photo etch parts to be added laid out. 

This photo shows the island with the scratchbuilt masts, radars and other detailing added before painting.
