I am still figuring out in what order to best assemble my models. When mating parts of two different colors, painting each part beforehand removes the need for masking. However the risk of glue melting the paint is what scares me off from using this method. I spend quite a bit of time masking, and it really needs to be perfect to look good. Even a small mistake in masking can cause problems (see the root of the engine mount closest to the bottom of this image).

Lastly, even with an airbrush, and burnishing my masking down relatively forcefully, I still get penetration under the masking.

Unfortunately experience my first paint cracking. No idea what causes this.

Album info

Slowly coming together. I gave the nose another treatment with putty, and did a base coat of grey. Followed it up with masking, and applying white. The use of white was a learning experience. It took around 4+ coats to get the coverage to look decent. I first applied 3x coats gloss, with around 20 minutes between coats. I was dissatisfied with the look, and think I also overthinned the paint. I let the model dry completely overnight, and then applied 2x coats matt white.

The journey of learning how to thin continues. I noticed the paint reaches a critical threshold where just a few more drops of thinner make a huge difference. I mixed and thinned my paint, put it into the airbrush, and noticed sputtering or small drops being spit around. Diluting further did the trick.
