Album info
This model represents the Titan II ICBM used by the US Air Force from 1963 to 1987. There were as many as 56 Titan II missiles on 24-hour continuous alert in the early 1980s surrounding three bases: McConnell AFB, KS; Davis–Monthan AFB, AZ, and Little Rock AFB, AR.
Derivative medium-lift Titan 23G rockets carried payloads to Earth orbit for the USAF and NOAA. Those payloads included the USAF Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and NOAA weather satellites. The modified Titan II rockets were launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, through 2003. During my USAF career in meteorology, my weather predictions benefitted greatly from the images produced by these Titan-launched satellites.
