A-34 Comet Mk1 and Scammell transporter with 30 ton trailer.
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/4/7/9/1479479-26091-23-720.jpg)
Starting to turn.... Thank goodness it missed the petrol pumps!
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/4/8/1/1479481-26091-25-720.jpg)
Cables attached, from a recovery vehicle in the background
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/4/9/4/1479494-26091-66-720.jpg)
Don't ask me, I just got here ?
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/4/9/5/1479495-26091-49-720.jpg)
How did you manage that!? How can a transporter turn over? Too fast round a corner, perhaps?
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/3/3/1/1513331-26091-73-720.jpg)
Kit for the Comet purchased...
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/3/3/3/1513333-26091-79-720.jpg)
Good box art shows the lugs for lifting the hull and turret. Those on the hill are part of the kit parts, but I'll need to add those on the turret.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/3/3/2/1513332-26091-87-720.jpg)
But the kit is simplified, so if I need them, I'll have to improvise.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/3/3/5/1513335-26091-75-720.jpg)
Watch this space....
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/3/3/4/1513334-26091-13-720.jpg)
Spare turret and gun, for practice. Dremmel bit used to open up the muzzle brake.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/3/3/6/1513336-26091-18-720.jpg)
First attempt, using copper wire. I need some shackles as well as lugs. I may try spare PE too.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/9/1/9/1513919-26091-11-720.jpg)
I now have a good idea of how to make lifting eyes and shackles. This first attempt is 5/10 for the plate and 3/10 for the shackle. But I know what to change when I make a start on the real turret, etc.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/9/2/0/1513920-26091-53-720.jpg)
I'll need to make at least six more, for the Comet's turret and deck.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/6/2/6/1525626-26091-71-720.jpg)
A start on the kit, requires the storage bin to be opened up. Here, the floor and the back of the turret made to measure and installed.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/7/7/1525777-26091-70-720.jpg)
So, saw cut the lid off and make a floor from spare sheet.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/7/8/1525778-26091-97-720.jpg)
The loose fitted lid looks neat and tidy.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/7/7/9/1525779-26091-17-720.jpg)
The floor, recessed into chamfers created around the three sides, fits flush.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/8/2/1525782-26091-53-720.jpg)
Next, let's make these holes into something useful.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/8/1/1525781-26091-94-720.jpg)
Plates for the lifting points coming along. Some more filing required. I've used plastic as the PE prototype was too thin.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/3/3/8/1526338-26091-69-720.jpg)
Closing up the underside of the turret. It's not essential but is good practice for when it might be important.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/3/3/6/1526336-26091-33-720.jpg)
Reasonably neat fit. I will infill the slit later.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/3/3/9/1526339-26091-21-720.jpg)
Okay, so there's where some plastic card infill will be required. The fenders' edges have been thinned down to less than half the cast thickness.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/3/4/0/1526340-26091-14-720.jpg)
The offending empty space... And fenders that needed to be thinned down
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/3/4/1/1526341-26091-25-720.jpg)
I'm thinking about try to open up the grills, so have started by scraping away the cast texture from one grill. If I can make a recess deep enough, I will fit some open mesh sheet.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/3/4/2/1526342-26091-87-720.jpg)
Lifting plates made neater and fitted, plus the cupula hatch thinned, cut into halves, and fitted.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/3/4/3/1526343-26091-86-720.jpg)
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/3/4/4/1526344-26091-39-720.jpg)
Progress on the wheels, with the hull sides painted first.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/3/4/5/1526345-26091-99-720.jpg)
The kit's diorama base.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/4/2/7/1527427-26091-81-720.jpg)
Two more lifting plates added, to the rear of the hull. Grey paint overall, then light grey, then white for high-lights.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/4/2/6/1527426-26091-13-720.jpg)
Hopefully, this will show through the top coat colour.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/4/2/8/1527428-26091-14-720.jpg)
Oils used for dusty hull sides, behind the wheels and under the fenders.
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/4/2/9/1527429-26091-28-720.jpg)
Dry fitted top to bottom.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/4/3/0/1527430-26091-89-720.jpg)
Wheels and tracks to be painted next. Small extras also to be made and added, then the main gun, etc.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/8/2/0/1531820-26091-96-720.jpg)
Today's progress.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/8/1/2/1531812-26091-64-720.jpg)
Extra bracket to secure the towing cable.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/8/1/3/1531813-26091-87-720.jpg)
It's coming together..
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/8/1/1/1531811-26091-52-720.jpg)
Scratch building two fire extinguishers, for the rear bin.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/8/1/8/1531818-26091-52-720.jpg)
Extinguishers mounted, and the spot light.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/8/1/5/1531815-26091-55-720.jpg)
Scratch built a spot light from copper wire and a spare piece of clear sprue, ideally shaped so just a hole needed to be drilled.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/8/1/4/1531814-26091-41-720.jpg)
Wheels painted, and ready for the rubber tracks.
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/8/1/6/1531816-26091-57-720.jpg)
Tracks painted, so not much left to do.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/8/1/9/1531819-26091-45-720.jpg)
Loose fitted the deck to the hull. Add ons painted.
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/8/2/1/1531821-26091-43-720.jpg)
I just need to find the correct adhesive, to stick down the nylon mesh for the exhaust grill.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/8/2/2/1531822-26091-87-720.jpg)
It's the first time I've made little extras, based on period photos, and am pleased with the results so far. No doubt I'll re-visit some areas to make improvements, so all comments welcome! Driver's mirror and decals later....
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/6/2/4/1532624-26091-55-720.jpg)
Mesh added for the exhaust. I left the inlet grill just as the cast texture.
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/6/2/5/1532625-26091-28-720.jpg)
Fine wire for the headlamp guards . I need to find some slightly thicker wire, as these look too thin. I'll leave them for now.
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/6/4/0/1532640-26091-78-720.jpg)
Some dust overall, using Ammo MIG oils. I'll re-visit when fully dry. I decided against adding a driver's mirror.
![Album image #47 Album image #47](/albums/img/6/4/1/1532641-26091-21-720.jpg)
![Album image #48 Album image #48](/albums/img/6/6/5/1532665-26091-66-720.jpg)
Suggestions for improvements welcome!
![Album image #49 Album image #49](/albums/img/6/6/6/1532666-26091-49-720.jpg)
Hasps added to the toolboxes, and a couple of extras added to fake some vision slits.
![Album image #50 Album image #50](/albums/img/6/8/0/1532680-26091-31-720.jpg)
![Album image #51 Album image #51](/albums/img/9/1/5/1532915-26091-80-720.jpg)
More weathering, hopefully an improvement...
![Album image #52 Album image #52](/albums/img/9/1/6/1532916-26091-43-720.jpg)
All suggestions welcome🙂
![Album image #53 Album image #53](/albums/img/6/3/4/1548634-26091-67-720.jpg)
Sprues for the Scammell transporter.
![Album image #54 Album image #54](/albums/img/6/3/3/1548633-26091-92-720.jpg)
Some lumps need to be removed, flash tidied up, etc.
![Album image #55 Album image #55](/albums/img/6/3/1/1548631-26091-39-720.jpg)
Cab started, with some fine detail to bring out, plus plastic to transform into canvas...
![Album image #56 Album image #56](/albums/img/6/3/2/1548632-26091-32-720.jpg)
But first, the interior needs to be cleaned up, painted, fine details created, then assembled 🙂
![Album image #57 Album image #57](/albums/img/4/4/6/1550446-26091-15-720.jpg)
I'll try to add pedals and hand-painted speedometer. The windows need glass too. The mould bumps need to be removed too.
![Album image #58 Album image #58](/albums/img/4/4/7/1550447-26091-91-720.jpg)
I'll also try to add the gear lever, hand brake and a few levers. More work needed on the seats...
![Album image #59 Album image #59](/albums/img/4/4/8/1550448-26091-86-720.jpg)
Loose fitted, to give an idea of where this is heading. Fitted the external tank lower, so it's pipes connect through a hole in the bonnet better.
![Album image #60 Album image #60](/albums/img/8/9/6/1551896-26091-59-720.jpg)
Holes drilled to each side of the winch drum. I need to deal with the open joint.
![Album image #61 Album image #61](/albums/img/8/9/7/1551897-26091-86-720.jpg)
Cable wrapped on the winch.
![Album image #62 Album image #62](/albums/img/9/0/5/1551905-26091-87-720.jpg)
Developing the painting of details.
![Album image #63 Album image #63](/albums/img/9/0/6/1551906-26091-61-720.jpg)
Still working on the seats, and a base for the gear lever.
![Album image #64 Album image #64](/albums/img/9/0/7/1551907-26091-81-720.jpg)
Lumps sanded off the windscreen frame, and painting improved.
![Album image #65 Album image #65](/albums/img/9/6/1/1551961-26091-62-720.jpg)
Clutch and brake pedals installed.
![Album image #66 Album image #66](/albums/img/9/6/2/1551962-26091-24-720.jpg)
Accelerator pedal, hand brake, and a couple of winch control levers installed. A blob of CA gel used to create knobs on the ends of the levers. I'll gloss black them later.
![Album image #67 Album image #67](/albums/img/9/6/3/1551963-26091-40-720.jpg)
Excess plastic removed from the step, so it looks more realistic now.
![Album image #68 Album image #68](/albums/img/9/6/5/1551965-26091-33-720.jpg)
A little fading and wear added to the edges of the seats. The gear lever installed too.
![Album image #69 Album image #69](/albums/img/9/6/8/1551968-26091-62-720.jpg)
The mesh frame has been filed thinner, so a little less chunky, and the ends of the box thinned too.
![Album image #70 Album image #70](/albums/img/9/6/9/1551969-26091-78-720.jpg)
Driver installed on a blob of white glue.
![Album image #71 Album image #71](/albums/img/9/7/0/1551970-26091-59-720.jpg)
Meanwhile.....filling circular recesses has to be done on the ramp components.
![Album image #72 Album image #72](/albums/img/9/7/1/1551971-26091-52-720.jpg)
Ready for assembly
![Album image #73 Album image #73](/albums/img/9/7/2/1551972-26091-92-720.jpg)
These all need to dry thoroughly before I can think about the next steps. The seam on the fuel tank will be filled and sanded next.
![Album image #74 Album image #74](/albums/img/9/7/3/1551973-26091-60-720.jpg)
Front windscreen added.
![Album image #75 Album image #75](/albums/img/9/7/4/1551974-26091-97-720.jpg)
And the two side windows too.
![Album image #76 Album image #76](/albums/img/9/9/2/1551992-26091-26-720.jpg)
Cab joined to the engine compartment, and the steering column and wheel squeezed in.
![Album image #77 Album image #77](/albums/img/9/9/3/1551993-26091-39-720.jpg)
The gear lever has been painted dark grey, so it is slightly more visible.
![Album image #78 Album image #78](/albums/img/9/9/4/1551994-26091-28-720.jpg)
![Album image #79 Album image #79](/albums/img/9/9/5/1551995-26091-80-720.jpg)
Definitely coming together at last 🙂
![Album image #80 Album image #80](/albums/img/9/9/6/1551996-26091-32-720.jpg)
Loosely fitted roof need to be painted and installed, together with the rear canvas curtains
![Album image #81 Album image #81](/albums/img/9/9/7/1551997-26091-57-720.jpg)
Enough for one day 😉
![Album image #82 Album image #82](/albums/img/8/9/7/1552897-26091-41-720.jpg)
The first few pieces have now been assembled
![Album image #83 Album image #83](/albums/img/8/9/8/1552898-26091-27-720.jpg)
The next few parts require as much care.
![Album image #84 Album image #84](/albums/img/9/1/3/1552913-26091-47-720.jpg)
![Album image #85 Album image #85](/albums/img/8/9/4/1552894-26091-11-720.jpg)
The wheels are intended to freely rotate on the axles.
![Album image #86 Album image #86](/albums/img/8/9/5/1552895-26091-65-720.jpg)
Front wheels.
![Album image #87 Album image #87](/albums/img/8/9/6/1552896-26091-86-720.jpg)
Rear wheels.
![Album image #88 Album image #88](/albums/img/9/1/4/1552914-26091-57-720.jpg)
![Album image #89 Album image #89](/albums/img/9/1/6/1552916-26091-96-720.jpg)
![Album image #90 Album image #90](/albums/img/9/1/7/1552917-26091-38-720.jpg)
![Album image #91 Album image #91](/albums/img/1/0/0/1553100-26091-72-720.jpg)
The front suspension pivots but the pin to the front was off centre and too large. Sawed it off and added a replacement
![Album image #92 Album image #92](/albums/img/1/0/1/1553101-26091-46-720.jpg)
And now the chassis and front suspension can be installed.
![Album image #93 Album image #93](/albums/img/1/0/2/1553102-26091-66-720.jpg)
Time to think about painting parts that will be awkward if installed first.
![Album image #94 Album image #94](/albums/img/1/0/3/1553103-26091-18-720.jpg)
Various parts being added to the chassis.
![Album image #95 Album image #95](/albums/img/1/0/4/1553104-26091-97-720.jpg)
A tiny hole drilled to allow a cable to be fed between the sheaves.
![Album image #96 Album image #96](/albums/img/1/0/5/1553105-26091-13-720.jpg)
Cabin roof suitably weathered.
![Album image #97 Album image #97](/albums/img/1/0/6/1553106-26091-92-720.jpg)
Storage bin added. I'll make a step for the rear door.
![Album image #98 Album image #98](/albums/img/1/2/5/1553125-26091-16-720.jpg)
Fuel tank added. I'll make a step for the rear door, but the step on the tank looks neat.
![Album image #99 Album image #99](/albums/img/8/0/8/1555808-26091-64-720.jpg)
A mock up to see where it is heading. The wheels for the trailer still to be done (two halves to be matched and cleaned up, then painted).
![Album image #100 Album image #100](/albums/img/8/0/9/1555809-26091-89-720.jpg)
Wheels loosely positioned, but wheel arches added and underside primed.
![Album image #101 Album image #101](/albums/img/8/1/0/1555810-26091-19-720.jpg)
Almost looks like it could be converted to a hot rod!
![Album image #102 Album image #102](/albums/img/8/1/1/1555811-26091-10-720.jpg)
Trailer ramps and various small parts added, then primed. Wheels are just loose at the moment.
![Album image #103 Album image #103](/albums/img/0/0/3/1557003-26091-80-720.jpg)
The holes in some of the hubs are off-centre, so need painting of the hubs progressed.
![Album image #104 Album image #104](/albums/img/2/6/4/1557264-26091-15-720.jpg)
Rear wheels and hubs.
![Album image #105 Album image #105](/albums/img/2/6/5/1557265-26091-91-720.jpg)
Front wheels and short axles.
![Album image #106 Album image #106](/albums/img/2/6/6/1557266-26091-47-720.jpg)
Painting continues....
![Album image #107 Album image #107](/albums/img/2/6/7/1557267-26091-35-720.jpg)
Trailer painting started.
![Album image #108 Album image #108](/albums/img/2/6/8/1557268-26091-77-720.jpg)
Picking out details started.
![Album image #109 Album image #109](/albums/img/2/6/9/1557269-26091-44-720.jpg)
Rear rollers and sheaves picked out. Leaf springs too.
![Album image #110 Album image #110](/albums/img/2/7/0/1557270-26091-44-720.jpg)
A dark wash here and there ...
![Album image #111 Album image #111](/albums/img/2/7/1/1557271-26091-53-720.jpg)
![Album image #112 Album image #112](/albums/img/4/2/5/1557425-26091-93-720.jpg)
Wheels added. Every axle shortened slightly, so the hubs fit closer to the wheels.
![Album image #113 Album image #113](/albums/img/4/2/6/1557426-26091-43-720.jpg)
Step for rear door added. Yes, the steering wheel needs to be reinstalled. Going to be tricky....
![Album image #114 Album image #114](/albums/img/4/2/7/1557427-26091-52-720.jpg)
Fuel filler made, and step added.
![Album image #115 Album image #115](/albums/img/4/2/8/1557428-26091-82-720.jpg)
Timber deck painted.
![Album image #116 Album image #116](/albums/img/4/2/9/1557429-26091-44-720.jpg)
Ready for first customer.
![Album image #117 Album image #117](/albums/img/4/3/0/1557430-26091-59-720.jpg)
Comet hitching a lift. Oh, and wheel nuts painted too.
![Album image #118 Album image #118](/albums/img/4/3/8/1557438-26091-25-720.jpg)
Just for size comparison.
![Album image #119 Album image #119](/albums/img/8/6/3/1562863-26091-70-720.jpg)
Decals applied, sealed and some light weathering to the wheels, etc.
![Album image #120 Album image #120](/albums/img/8/6/4/1562864-26091-90-720.jpg)
I'll revisit the wooden tool box, to make it darker and more brown. That seam on the wheel needs to be seen to, too....
![Album image #121 Album image #121](/albums/img/8/6/6/1562866-26091-47-720.jpg)
My clumsy fingers snapped off the left indicator, and I'll have to ask the carpet monster for it back.....
![Album image #122 Album image #122](/albums/img/8/6/7/1562867-26091-62-720.jpg)
![Album image #123 Album image #123](/albums/img/8/6/8/1562868-26091-87-720.jpg)
The right indicator is intact and painted.

Welcome, John. Many thanks for your 'likes', everyone. I'm going to try to add more small extras, based on the photos. Two fire extinguishers on the outside of the storage bin, driver's wing mirror, spot lights.... Let's see how this goes 🙂

Some more progress..... thinking about undercoat, pre-shading, highlights , etc.

Lots added, and tracks installed, so the deck now fitted to the hull too. Decals added, so more piccies soon. I'd like to try to make the driver's mirror, and cages for the front lights.... Oh, and weathering....and make some shackles too......Still to find a recovery vehicle, so plenty still to do.

Indeed, Ben. A recovery vehicle will be the minimum, but it would be good to have a few figures too.

Welcome, James I've ordered a Scammell tank transporter, so the next phase will start soon..... I still have no idea how they spilled a tank off and managed to flip the trailer too!

This kit was one of my first AFVs and seeing how much you improved it by adding these details is impressive and it gives me a nostalgic feeling. Great build so far

Many thanks for your encouraging comments, Ahmet. I need to make some small shackle for cables too, so let's see how things progress. I too have re-made a few kits that I made many, many years ago, and enjoyed them all over again (hopefully a little better this time around!).

I have now started the Airfix Scammell transporter. Lot's of flash on some of the sprues, which is expected. A few circular recesses to fill, but also several raised circular lumps to neatly remove.... The over-simplified cab needs a few levers and door handles. I'll upload piccies as things progress, but I need to do some research first.....

Lots of filling and sanding to be done, before anything more can be glued....

Welcome, Ralf. I need to prepare lots of parts today, before any further assembly, plus scratch building of driver.'s controls (fingers crossed...)

I'm looking forward to preparing the trailer's wheels, and lots of detail painting on the whole rig.

It would be tempting to obtain another of these, just to try some modifications, Walton 😉 It's crying out for a tall, shiny exhaust stack too! And then there's the paint job.....

I'll have to make a suitable base, Ben. But not sure about having no figures.... suggestions?

Oh yes… and the airfix 1/76 infantry wouldn't fit well here. Maybe something could be 3d printed…

Album info
Photos of an accident in Italy, during WW2. Somehow, a Comet tank fell off a transporter.... I think the trailer in the photos is a 40 ton trailer.
