4B-Inspiration: Cold War (1980s)
The resurgence of the Cold War was unsettling to most people in the 1980s. ICBMs were siloed in my home state of Nebraska, and nearby in Kansas, Wyoming and South Dakota. The new MX, later named Peacekeeper, and B-1B bomber were not just in the national news, they were in my backyard. This further impressed upon me the importance of military service in defense of the United States.
This collection features nuclear missiles and other Cold War weapons of the United States and Soviet Union during the 1980s resurgence of the Cold War. The Soviet threat to the United States was a key factor in my decision to join the US Air Force later in life. Interestingly, all the Soviet missiles were still in use while I served in the US Air Force. On the United States' side, I only included missiles in this collection that I did not encounter on active duty. When I was stationed at Cape Canaveral Air Station, I participated in test launches of the US Navy's UGM-96 Trident C4 and the UK Royal Navy's UGM-27 Polaris A3. Aircraft are selected from headline news stories of the 1980s.
