A new build starte 🙂. It seems quite easy but one thing puzzles me - the tracks. They compose of 4 straight plastic parts and instruction says to bend them with hair dryer. It is first time I encountered this type of tracks. Anyone tried doing something like this?
15 September, 15:36
Snake Plissken
I have heard of this type of assembly but have never built one. However, I have lots of experience heating and softening styrene plastic. You can also try very hot or boiling water -- soak the tracks in boiling water, then fish them out of the water with long tweezers and bend them around the rear sprocket, idler and road wheels and hold until they cool. You may even get by using no heat, just slowly and carefully bend curves into the tracks.

After some work done I need to say I am a little disappointed with this kit. Instruction includes some mistakes and it is not always easy to read how and where exactly a specific part should be located. More over I expected more from new molds (parts require a lot of work to remove additional plastic).

Snake Plissken
Hi Marcin. My advice is to *expect mistakes* and do your research accordingly. It may or may not be fun to research the T-55 but most of the photos or line drawings you can find online are free, it just takes some time.

I don't know how you do it. As per usual my teenage self is going through another phase, or at least i hope it is a phase. Building models hasn't been as fun as it used to be recently. Sure i still enjoy it but its not the same. Knowing most of you on this site have at least been building for more than 5 years so i wanted to ask. How do you still find enjoyment in model building after all these years?
1 29 September, 19:53
John Hughes
By taking regular breaks from it! I haven't been at the bench for two months, but I'll be back when I feel like doing it again.
29 September, 19:55
Kesa Tiho
Id also take a break but building models is one of the only things i can do in the city. I cant go mountain biking, i dont have any friends, im not wealthy enough to buy drones and im not old enough to get drunk and/or laid. Building models is one of the only things i can do to entertain myself other than mindlessly watching tv or crying myself to sleep because of the countless deaths ive witnessed ive got nothing else to do.

I tell you, it sort of ceases to be fun when you have ADS or Advanced Modeler Syndrome 😄, because you over-plan, over-analyze and start over-buying accessories and aftermarket parts and it makes finishing a kit very difficult.
30 September, 02:51
gorby
It's perfectly normal to drift from one interest to another Kesa, particularly at your age, as you need to try different things to see what you enjoy the most. There is nothing wrong if that turns out to be something other than modelling. In fact it's good to broaden your interests and not stick to one thing.
I suspect that the majority of the adult modellers on here had a long gap between their childhood and when they returned to it later in life, so we have had a chance to experience other pastimes. Also most adults may only have an hour or so to stick bits of plastic together each day and are less likely to to get bored with it as a result.

Thanks Simon, I'm working on it 😀The tires are pretty good, but needed some work to make them fit. Probably it might be easier on the Academy kit. The ones provided by Trumpeter looked quite small and thin.

I bought this through E-Bay, only to find the kit had already been started, and a couple of key pieces were missing. Fortunately, I was refunded, and the seller let me keep the model.

In order to build it, I had to pour a couple of replacement resin pieces; it cost me more for the resin and casting material than I paid for the kit! Still, in the end, it turned out quite well. Because it was much more work, I think I have a soft spot for this one over the yellow/red Labrador

Float tyres (tires) are available aftermarket. Personally, I like the look of them, on certain trucks. Just make sure that they fit your rims, because a lot of stuff is 1/24 and that definitely makes a difference! I think that Jamie, from Molenium (unsure of the spelling) sells both versions, and supporting rims? You did catch my eye with that camelback tandem though. I can only imagine where you got that from?
13 February, 22:29

Try ST Supply for aftermarket too. Moluminum tends to not have things in stock. Paul @ ST constantly has a rotating supply as well as a diverse selection. Takes a minute for the stuff to show but, I'm New York and he's Canadian so, expected.🤷‍♂️

16 February, 15:32
Jonathon Herring
Totally understand. During the winter (slow time) my purchases are light but, the rest of the time, I order at least monthly. He has product that is hard to find and I believe he may even cast some stuff himself. I say this because things will come back up that aren't around before or elsewhere. I check on him weekly.
16 February, 15:48
Mona
I was hoping he had a few items, more of the tires I want ..but supply an demand .. i shall order what is possible an then check back ...no hurry
16 February, 19:46
Bozzer
Lol, Mona is becoming a truck junkie.
Seriously though, with the amount of amazing aftermarket parts, it's extremely hard to control your urges! If I can't find what I want, I try to print it myself. The problem is, I start to look for something, then see something else, buy that, then something else I see, before I know it, I've got a drawer full of stuff, and I still don't have what I needed in the first place?
Self confessed truck junkie, myself.
17 February, 09:18
Mona
I've enough kits (various) to build ..that I can't possibly finish really no reason to buy more but yup ...junkie and your right about them aftermarket detail items ... they do seem to be the difference to a nice build of a marginal older kit, that and a element of practice ..I haven't the desire to 3d print ..and if I did I would print dash air ducts ..for the 68 beetle in the garage
17 February, 16:08
Bozzer
Just wait until you see the CTM stuff! I gotta admit, I keep tissues handy, when I browse through their website! To catch all my drool! Some of those dashboards, look better than on the 1:1 version. PE isn't my strongest point, but I intend on treating myself to a PE bender, and getting my big boy pants on.
17 February, 21:29
Jonathon Herring
True to the CTM comment Bozzer. I have always been a PE fan, where applicable. Eduard likes to make grab handles that are 2 dimensional so I end up replacing those with brass or styrene. Their dash boards were fantastic but have been out shined by 3d decals. CTM has been bought for as many kits that I have and they make interior sets for. I tell ya, I could spend tons of money on just their PE. Like, exhaust clamps?! Really?! 🥹 thanks for the details but, am I gonna end up in the loony bin? (Say nothing😏 Just move along. Nothing to see here)

Don't worry guys, you're in good company. Us British drink beer for breakfast, and our cousins over the water, love a good beer! After all that ale, we won't care who's driving, or where we're going? 26 February, 16:19

Hi 🙂 Ahmet .. thank you, yes I made the frame, transfer case & driveshaft and modified the front springs . I over did it on the front springs ..and the front driveline should be different, But overall its reasonable ..may not be "accurate" though
26 February, 18:24
Bozzer
Mona, any chance of some pictures of the motor/engine???
26 February, 19:46
Mona
Hi, Bozzer ...sure I will take a few ..one Detroit 8v72 coming up, if i did better planning I'd would have ordered a 12v ..or a big CAT engine ..maybe in another build
26 February, 21:15
Jonathon Herring
Mona: accuracy is in the eye of the……fooie, 👅 did ya have fun? That……… that's what matters. If anyone says anything, tell them that you have it from a PNWW (Professional Nitwit With a Wrench🤪) that trucks can be special ordered to the specifications of the buyer. You are the customer in this case. If you're gonna weather it, working trucks are "Consumer Adjusted" constantly. Hell, before we let them go (sold or dead) we have many "adjustments" on each and every one. We are hard on trucks.🤷‍♂️
26 February, 21:23
Mona
agreed Jonathon 👍
26 February, 23:29
Bozzer
Thanks Mona. I've gotta agree with Jonathon. Everything was/is ordered to customer spec. You can literally build your own truck! The dealer gave you options, and helped you get the truck you wanted, for your needs? Engine, transmission, axles, diff's, trim, sleeper, you name it? I've seen many a Mack, with a Cummins in it, and even a few Detroit's. Nothing is impossible, when it comes to haulin gass 😉
26 February, 23:44
Mona
I noticed that from the Kenworth site and the various "history of" videos on the u-tube .. so I figured I had room for creative liberty 🙂
27 February, 02:55

Thank you Gerald. My Actual name is Steve. Every kind of user name I tried here was already taken so.... what the heck.
I've been building models on a steady basis since I was 6 years old; that's been 67 years 7 months now.
The Fine scale "modeling" forum has been dying over the last 7 months or so and sadly has now finally rolled over. I was on there over 21 years and now I'm checking around for another 21 year replacement.
I'll be in and out of here as time goes by. Have a great day!

Words can't begin to describe how frustrating this kit is.
For a modern tool, the quality just simply isn't there. What's more is the way the sprues are designed. Most of the stuff is somewhat organized, but there are just so many sprues, with some steps using parts from 5 different sprues plus photo etch. That alone wouldn't be so bad if half of the pieces wouldn't have some bizarre gate connections. Instead of opting to connect to the somewhat sacrificial connective part of the detail, they have gates directly on details. And not just that, for details with grooves the gate just goes over those. There is no way of making the details look any good without manually re-scribing them. And this is the case for a good third of the parts. They have gates connecting to the smallest of handles - ON THE HANDLE PART. And there doesn't seem to be any spares either, which would be a nice move if you set up the pieces to pretty much 50:50 self destruct on cutting.
The kit has amazing interior detail that will not be relevant for at least 90% of people, it just seems to be there for marketing and for rising the price, because 80% of the kit is interior. And the interior isn't even that well done, there are gate marks on tons of flat surfaces including areas that are almost impossible to fill if you choose to do so. There doesn't seem to be an exterior only variant available.
If you simply want to have an MT-LB model, I wouldn't suggest this kit unless you want to frustrate yourself, but sadly there doesn't seem to be a better choice available. And when you do opt for this, I suggest your go through the instructions and then decide on if you really need to build every single interior detail or not, because it's really not fun with the poor part quality, uneven fit and somewhat confusing instructions. Best case you could have a bare engine as set dressing somewhere down the line when you feel like dealing with this mess again. Worst case you can throw together the MT-LB shell with minimal pain and toss the rest in the garbage where it belongs.

That seems to be the model manufacturer trend; more and more parts to make the modelers happy. The more parts there are, the happier the modeler and they are ten times happier if the parts are microscopic. 😄 My vote is for you to persevere and finish it 😉. When you write "gate marks" do you mean ejector pin marks?

Sorry for the interior parts I meant the round ejector pin marks, yes. On some details (like hatches) they seem to have avoided them, so it's even more bizarre that on some parts they are again so pronounced.
For the runner gates it seems they have two types of gates they apply on every piece no matter what instead of modelling them to be flush with the pieces and not covering any actual details.
Oh and I forgot to mention the track links, that each have 5 gate connections, plus two teeth as separate pieces and some heavy mold lines.
But I will finish it no matter what. If I managed to pull myself through 1/350 photo etch, I can do this as well 😂

Thanks guys for your interest and comments. This project will be finished next year. I am getting all stuff for the project. The first pictures are "dry-fitting" with base model (HB kit).
