The tank looks great! Looking forward to see the figures and the finished project. I imagine you will also build a little simple base everything will stand on?

Hi Robin, you really read my mind! Yes, I'm planning to learn how to build a simple base. I also need to figure out a few techniques, including creating water effects and soap bubbles.

There are a number of water solutions you can try out before applying them onto to your diorama and tank. These are a few I know of. Foam (Vallejo 26.231, No)
STILL WATER 250ML (AK Interactive AK 8008, No)
Water Foam Acrylic 100ml Bottle (AK Interactive AK 8036, No)
Maybe one of them works out for you.
There probably are also some DIY methods but I have no clue about those.

Thank you Mona, that must have been a terrifying experience. The idea would be a fortified position in the Mekong Delta. I'm planning to build a sandback bunker and a piece of ricefield. The M113's will be stationary in a defensive position. Soldiers will be relaxed not knowing what is coming. But the layout is still evolving. Haven't decide the size of the groundwork yet. I'll be starting the diorama base soon... Will be continued 😉

A while ago I have started the Junkers F.13 from MikroMir, which is on hold because I was not happy with some details and was not in the mood of scratch work to fix things.
Then I had the chance to see the new Junkers F.13 😮 I'm now a proud owner of that damn great kit!
With the finish of the Stearman and the new year I put it on the bench. And after Kenneth had the chance to see this build with his own eyes I should give the other usual followers a chance to see it too.
Made a good progress the last days - a relaxing out-of-the-box build so far 👍 I have seen no other builds here yet?

Yeah Robert, it is fantastic! As I'm not a tank builder this is my first kit from MiniArt. The plastic is softer then usual, but that is ok for me.
I have read bad things about the fit, but I think it is perfect, at least what I have seen so far. Sometime the fit is very tight - you need to understand how it should be. Add a good amount of ultra thin glue until it fits. So you avoid later problems.

Great progress. Compared to TAKOM, MENG has included the right component. In your original picture you can't see any grille, just the radiator and the glass cover in front of it.

Hi @Airzz, for the base I use AK Real Color RC 229 FS24031 US Helo Drab, mottled with mix of Gunze C12/H52 Olive Drab and C33 flat black and mix of the olive drab with RLM22. I varied the ratios to get more tonal variation.
For weathering, I use Tamiya black panel liner, Mr. Weathering Color Grayish Brown, Sundy Wash, Ocher Soil and some weathering pigments (forgot which one).

Yes, the canopy is a bit tricky. I remember that there was a gap on the left lower area that I filled with Vallejo putty. I also had to push the right front up a bit to align with the fuselage. Overall fit is okay, but you need to test fit several times to know the problem area before committing to glue. I used Gunze Mr. Cement SP for the canopy. Hope this helps.

Thank you gentlemen! 🙂 Denis, yes, I know, the kit contains all the parts for the Soviet built Il-28, they need to replace the kit original parts for the H-5. But the truth is that this kit has so many incorrect features, that it really doesn't matter that much. I simply intend to have fun!

Łukasz, you are absolutely right. The first project ended up with the half-finished model flying gracefully into the bin after one mistake too many. I am now giving it a second attempt, knowing the pitfalls in advance and also possibly being slightly more experienced. I am already past the line where I gave up the last time. To be quite honest, this kit is not that bad, it just needs a bit of persuasion and elbow grease.

Cuajete, thank you! No, you need to cement the part. Unfortunately the fit is rather poor, so you will need to be careful with the correct alignment or the model will not sit straight on its wheels.

Thanks to everyone for being there. I have to vent my frustration about this kit now. I'm getting to the point where painting is next and it's hard to get a clean finish on the seams, especially the center seam of the two fuselage halves. I wouldn't have thought that (Revell) could still produce such a mess in the 21st century. The fit is worse than some kits from the sixties. I've already built a few Revell models, but I've never experienced anything so terrible. Even filling, sanding, priming, filling again and sanding doesn't help. Let's see what it looks like when the gray paint is on. In any case, I'm expecting a sobering result. I will therefore play around a bit with mottling so that the surface perhaps doesn't look quite so "monotonous" and conceals the problems. I hope that works.

Thanks guys. To your questions:
@Thomas: I think the most important thing to pay attention to is to do all the work on the engine cowlings BEFORE mounting them on the wings. Especially detail painting and masking is difficult to do on the inner casings when they are already assembled. Well, and you can read everywhere that the wheels should be built with metal tubes instead of the thin plastic parts. Fortunately I'm spared that with the inflight version.
@Erik: It may well be that some people get good kits, but a lot of people seem to have the same problems. I've read about it in various forums (community.revell.de/viewtopic.php?t=10172 and britmodeller.com/for..us-a400m-revell-172/) and even in the German trade magazine "ModellFan" (April 2024 issue) the author/modeler mentioned problems. I'm probably just extremely unlucky.

Hello, Greg. I know there's a Mi-1M kit in 1/72nd scale. Unfortunately, only this and a rather old kit from Special Hobby exists in 1/48 scale. In addition, this kit is an older version of the Mi-1A, which is different from the upgraded version of the Mi-1M. It has a different nose shape, different cockpit glazing and other minor changes. And since I decided to build the upgraded version of the Mi-1M, I will not avoid modifications to the kit.
To give you a better idea of the extent of the modifications to the kit, I've included a picture with the differences between the Mi-1A and Mi-1M versions color coded.

It's not too difficult to make new transparent parts by stretching warmed transparent foil over a pre-made template. Preparing the template is the most work. Stretching the warmed foil onto the template is just a routine that anyone can do after a few attempts.

I want to try to use the sandwich construction in the production of new glass parts for the coptics. So I made (using the same process as the transparent parts) parts out of white plastic sheeting. These parts will have holes cut out for the windows. The transparent part will then be inserted between these two parts. The white outer and inner parts will form the embossed framing of the transparent part.

I came back from vacation and it started to rain. Ideal conditions for modelling. 🙂
So I'm back and continuing to work on the model. I need to glue the finished nose to the glued fuselage so the cockpit overlay fits exactly. That determines the workflow. First I have to finish the nose and the inside of the fuselage and glue all the parts that need to be glued to the fuselage halves from the inside. After gluing the fuselage halves together, I would no longer be able to get to these parts (or only with great difficulty).
Photos of the work progress will be coming soon.

I glued several parts to both halves of the fuselage. These parts are glued from the inside, so they have to be glued before the fuselage is closed.
I also started working on making new parts for the cockpit.

Mike, thank you for your interest. Welcome aboard!
I've had the idea for this rebuild in my head for a few years now. Mainly because I've been waiting to see if anyone would start making 1:48 scale Mi-1M kits. Unfortunately, to this day, no manufacturer has this kit in their lineup. So I decided not to wait any longer and start building a model from what I have available.
My rebuild is just beginning. Most of the work on the model is yet to be done. I'd also like to try some new techniques that came to mind while planning to build this model.
@Villiers
Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it very much.

J35J welcome! I hope you like it here.
Bruce, I like a challenge like that. I like to experiment and enjoy thinking of and then implementing ways to improve my model.
I appreciate your concern for my safety. I live in a town in the highlands that wasn't badly affected by the floods. Only the river that runs through our town has increased flow, but it hasn't spilled out of its bed. Moreover, our house is 80 metres above the river, so even if the river had spilled out of its bed, it would certainly not have reached our house.

Alec, I don't blame you for making that decision. The MPM kit isn't very good. To build a nice model out of this kit requires a really large amount of work on virtually all parts of the kit. Plus the plastic the kit is made of is quite hard and cracks easily.

Not much of this coarse kits are build. And among those is no model with details like yours! To scratch all little things needs time but is worth the effort. Your hard way to do the canopy frame is a good example.
I think the instrument panel will not very visible at the end but for more contrast individual decals for the instruments are an option. Tom Anyz offers greatly printed universal dials in black and white, e.g. Universal cockpit dials 1.00 mm - 1.80mm (ANYZ AN037, No)

The method of layering multiple layers on top of each other was my first time.
When I was thinking how best to make the new bow and cockpit cover, I thought of making these new parts as a sandwich. It seemed like a good solution and I wanted to give it a try.
Truth be told, the fabrication was more challenging than I had originally imagined. But I'm glad I took the plunge. I'm happy with the result.

Thank you, Jan. This is the effect of the third attempt - first I tried to make them from thin PE board (failed), and then I tried Kristal Klear glue (not too bad, but it was difficult to control quantity of glue...). Too much CA can be simply sanded away when set hard.

Spanish Peral submarine New: 14 January, 19:35 1:144
Any thoughts on this part? It looks like there's some kind of mesh inside the ring, but is there glass in there as well?

Welcome Spanjaard 🙂
It is a fascinating machine, looks more modern than it is.

There was another build as well but it seems to have vanished from scalemates.

I have been playing with the idea of making some PE to improve the platform structure, but the rudders certainly could use some improvements ...
In regards to the propeller, I believe the shape is the correct one. before it was moved to the museum, it had a diferent color, but the sub has been repaired several times in the last 100+ years. see how it looked like before moved to the museum

Ok, thanks for the information Spanjaard 👍🏻
The platform is not that bad, but the poles holding the rope are too flat, so these will be made from plastic rod.
Regarding the rudders, I'm not sure if I can live with carved kit part, I might have a go and try to scratch new ones.

actually, I believe the poles did not hold any rope, but also a metal piece. let me see if I can find it for you.

I must say, all original images do not show any wood and/ or railing in place, so I might not even add it to the model.

yes, you are correct, it seems it was something that could be removed. it appears in seversl pictures without it.

Lovely Project, Jan!
In my opinión, after having a clase look to the photographs the railing apears to be made of a smoothet and better worked material so, I think, the railing and the platform have bern added for exposición purposes many years after the deco of this sub.

I saw the rest of them, Spaniard. My main concern is, as a draughtsman, that the rest of components are drawn (with excepctional quality and ability) in vegetal paper using ink, ideal for making copies through hand tracing, those drawings for chandeliers, platform, gardeners and such are drawn with a graphite pencil over graph paper (high quality, made by Lapage), as a mere draft (again, drawn with excepctional skill for the epoch), but no other stardard drawing shows the assembly or the constructive drawing of the element.
Lapage stopped production in the 90s, and I am not sure if their products were available in 1890.

installation of the platform pares.mcu.es/ParesBu..atalogo/show/7343759
supports of the platform pares.mcu.es/ParesBu..atalogo/show/7343761
according to the site, it is digitaliced from the original plans made by Peral.
I am not sure what will I do when I build this model, if i will add the platform or not. but details are there if anyone wants to use them

According to the drawings the support of the platform is a triangular shape, not like it is represented by mikromir. It would mean a lot of extra work to scratch these, so the chances of it being built without platform are increased significantly 😅

Thanks, mate, but Spaniard has a lot more information than me. I only can remember the sub lying on a city square many years ago and I cannot remember the platform, even the superstructure.
You know, the sub was decommissioned in the XIX century and was abandones as scrap till was used as a monument, so I think many parts have been lost and substituted by other similar. I Will follow your build with interest, subs are though: they do not give the modeler a lot of chance, so I bow my hat, mate.

for what i see in the pictures (never seen it live myself), Segio is right, there was no platform when it was in its pedestal in the square.
considering how close it was to be scrapped, we are lucky that the exterior has survived, platform and all interior were gone a long time ago.... I read an article saying that the engine used to recharge the battery still exists, but it is rusting away but politicians are not doing anything in order to add it to the exhibition before it becomes a pile of rust....

That's a sad situation Spanjaard, all it takes are a few people with vision and passion (and money) to safe such a piece of history.

about the mess behind the glass.... are you sure is not just pixelation of the picture? where is it located exactly?

I've got another picture, which is clearer. I will upload it to the album.
They are located at the bottom of the hull, near the small propellers both front and rear.

i am uncertain about the mesh... but this picture flickr.com/photos/ph..zg5-2j6ZtKR-2j74xFh/ and this drawing pares.mcu.es/ParesBu..atalogo/show/7345916 seem to indicate that those are glass windows.... maybe the mesh was there to add some protection, no idea. the name of the drawing means Glass hatch for the fins
also, I have something else... you had doubts about the propellers at some point... well, the picture above shows how they look today, and this one is the technical drawing for them pares.mcu.es/ParesBu..atalogo/show/7345907

by the way, there are basically the same windows at the other side, maybe to check the other vertical propeller.

Spanjaard is right. Double layered glasses with an internal metallic wire were not uncommon in the past: also can be found today here in Spain in old medical facilities, schools and factories dating back the 40s, 50s and 60s, times when the use of plastic reinforcement elements like polyethylene was still expensive.
My concern here is: was this reinforcement system used in the XIX century? Arr these windows original or these glasses have been part of a later reconstruction in the XX century?
This mesh was intended to maintain the breaks on one side and not transmit them to the other side, like the impact proof windshields when know now in cars since the 50s-60s.

Well, after my investigation I noticed that this kind of mesh reindorced glass was first patented in 1892, near the year of construction of the sub, but five years after. So, these glasses probably have been added in a ayer reconstruction.

Sergio, you know better about this kind of stuff, I think. but when looking at the section (bottom part of the drawing) it looks like two big pieces of glass and something else in between, could that be a third glass or may it be the base for the grill?

actually it is kind of funny, since in some pictures of the time when the sub was in its pedestal in Cartagena, the complete hull was painted in the same color... included the glass of thewindows!, so know knows what has been done to it over the years! 😄

Thanks for all the effort guys, I appreciate it.🙏🏻
Looking at the technical drawing of the port hole, it is clear to me that there are two glass panes, and there is a metal mesh in between them. It is not like the wire glass, but a small grill between them.
I will paint it looking like glass, not sure if I can recreate the grill as it is very small.
