More progress,
-Masking of clear parts with Eduard masks
-Some details on the main fuselage were not suitable for the variant -B so I removed them but also added some others from my spare parts
-Resque hoist provided by Italeri is suitable for -A variant only,so I made another from my spare box which is almost the correct one (will add some wiring also in the end)
-Added seatbelts on the seats

Great metal effect on the double radial engine, but very basic in detail. 😉
Ok, kidding aside. Lovely progress. I am in for the ride.

Back on the bench and I found the time to:
-Add the main landing system with hydraulic lines from tin wire
-Add the low grille on the engine cover despite the fact that Italeri missed that part in the instructions
-Fill a gup (maybe missed spot at the factory) with evergreen rod at the tail cone section
-Add the resque hoist and and it's wiring
-Prepared the main and tail rotor blades
-For the end I primed the model with black 1500 finishing surfacer
That's for today!

Thx for likes and comments! This is my first time to try scratchbuilt in aircraft. I'm still looking for ways to make the wear effect more real.

A long time coming but I have now completed this model. The canopy was a challenge to say the least to attach.
Stab/KG 53 Lille Air Base, France, Summer 1940. KG 53 was named the Kondor Legion. KG 53 took part in the invasion of France & the Low Countries in 1940 before being moved to Poland in June 1940. On 1 July it was moved again; taking an active part in the Battle of Britain including The Hardest Day on 18 August and the raid on 15 September known as Battle of Britain Day.

I built this about 20 years ago Guy as a gift for a WW2 Horsa pilot who was a friend of my wife's family. He'd flown Horsas into Normandy and Arnhem. He loved the model and it sat in his living room for the rest of his days. It's a nice kit as I recall.

Wow, this one brings back memories. As a teenager I loved looking through the Italeri catalogues and marvel at the paint jobs on the models. Most of them were painted by Francois Verlinden and I remember thinking I will never make models like that!

Probably, my most ambitous project yet. Im going to try and recreate a sinking of a submarine with depth charges, droped from a destroyer. Everything in 1/700 scale. For this, i bought the Battle of the Atlantic set, wich comes with a J-Claas destroyer, a type VII German submarine and a Short Sunderland amphibous plane.

Today i wanted to work on how i want my diorama to look. So i hoped on blender and downloded some free assets and placed them together to see how i want it to look. I think for the quantity of resin and the accuracy of the scene this is going to be more or less the final desing of my diorama.

I don't know if I'm going to finish the Sunderland😞😞. The fitting between the fuselages is too bad and fragile, using putty is not going to do the trick this time cause it will hide a lot of the nice detail and I will not be satisfied. I'll think about how to do it but there's not much hope now😓

Not really where you are headed with your diorama, but this might give a bit of context to my 'historical' comment Miguel.
"A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Sunderland (of No. 10 Squadron) made the type's first unassisted kill of a U-boat on 17 July 1940.[3]"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Sunderland
Flying Porcupine
"Two examples, in particular, stand out: on the 13th of April 1940, a Sunderland operating off the coast of Norway was attacked by six Ju-88C heavy fighters – the Sunderland shot down one JU-88, damaged another so seriously it had to quit the fight, and drove the rest away.
A 1943 encounter with JU-88 was even more savage when a Sunderland from 461 Sqn RAAF was attacked by eight JU-88C long-range fighters. Despite the Sunderland being heavily damaged with most of the crew wounded, the Sunderland downed three attackers, damaged and drove off the rest and made the 560-kilometre return journey to Britain where the heavily damaged aircraft was beached at Cornwall."

Keep up the great work on these tiny models.
Cheers
PS The nickname 'Flying Porcupine' was probably just a bit of allied propaganda as there's not a lot of evidence the Germans ever referred to a Sunderland as one. It's a lot like the Japanese with the Beaufighter and Whispering Death.

Thanks for all the info Jay! I really appreciate it. And they could fit very well with this diorama. They actually performed anti submarine operations from GB and they actually sunk 6 U-boats.
I'm sure if I'm able to fix my Sunderland, I'll paint it with their colours. I loved their history

I've already glued the U-Boat to the acrylic sheet. As the background for the diorama states that the aft reserve torpedo exploded, to hide the cables I made some bubbles coming down from the exploded compartment. It's not the best but it's better than to have some cables seen.

The acrylic sheets mold is done. The ship is now lifted with nylon cord to place on to the resin without sinking. And the u-Boat is secured in the container.
Next step, the resin pouring. I've never been so nervous about a model.

That bubble on the bow is killing me. It's right on the surface of the resin but I don't know how to get rid of it, and if I'll make it worse if I try something

I ended up making and painting the Sunderland, flying the colors Jay suggested. The end result, I think it's salvageable. I'm wondering if I should put it in the diorama. The downside is ill have to stick it with some transparent acrylic rod. It's going to be visible but not too much. I think if I mask the bottom part of the rod, the one closer to the water, as a droped depth charge from the porcupine, the result might not be bad at all.
What do you guys think
Thanks Guy!

Very cool set up, and very ambitious. You're a braver man than I.
Love the effect of the explosion, very convincing.

Thanks Jan!! Im not really brave, I was really really scared 🤣🤣. Its just a matter of trying and if I fail well, from everything we learn. In the end it turned out great, so that is that.
It's really great having all the support from all you experienced guys. I've only been modelling for a year or so, so your comments are really encouraging

I like it, I think it adds another element of interest (mind you I reeeeeally like the Sunderland so I might be biased). 🙂
I just want to comment on the how you've done the surface of the water - excellent, particularly the effect of the exploding depth charges.

It really does add a lot to the scene Gorby. I'll have to think thoroughly but I'm starting to like the diorama more with the Sunderland in it.
Also thank you and thanks Mr D for you kind words! The good thing about this diorama is that it really doesn't need any special abilities. It's as simple as it can get and it will give you a great result

It's has plenty of life to it 👏👌.
How did you get the bubbles in the right place 🤔??
I am starting a Diorama once l get my next build sorted, lm trying to rap up the X2 projects I'm working on and then l start my Mi-8 it's going to be part of a Chernobyl disaster Diorama, l have the damaged power station ready for paint,
I would like to create explosion n smoke like you have done here and LED.
Nice work 😀👍

Remarkable diorama. How did you get the resin so deep? The stuff I use, you can only pour 1/8" at a time. The diorama is so dynamic and exciting!

Thank you Villiers. Really glad that you like it. Your words really mean a lot coming from such a great modeller.
Well Mr D, the big bubbles coming out of the explosion are mainly produced by the gap a created when cutting the U-Boat. The air trapped inside came to the surface while the resin was curing, and it cured faster than the bubbles could scape to the surface. They as well appear because of the cotton I used to create the explosion effect, but mainly because of the first reason. Also Ill make sure to follow your build. It really sound amazing, and watching your prior work, Im sure it's going to be awesome.
Thank you also Ben!! I'm glad you enjoyed the work. As per the resin, I really used the cheap one from AliExpress. I mixed well the two parts till the resin and hardener were completely clear. Then I poured it and that's it. The instructions said I could pour up to 2 centimeters per pour. I did four centimeters deep at once and it cured great. The only downside I found is that not all small bubbles rised to the surface and couldn't be popped with a torch. I should have poured a little, then torched and then poured the rest. I didn't expect such a Good result from this but guess I got lucky.

Very impressed with your execution of this evocative scene. No escape for those poor souls..... Your creative solutions worked very well indeed, but I'm curious as to how you formed the surface of the sea? There's a lot going on, including the expanding circular waves. Superb!

Thanks for your words guys, they really mean a lot!!
Indeed bruce. It's one of the things that fascinate me the most about U-Boats. They were deadly war machines, every sailor was terrorized by them during WW2. But it unsettles me the way all those people knew, that a single flood, could mean they would never resurface again. It's really nerve racking. Those things are what attracts me the most to this machines and their histories.
As for the water, I used a combination of two artistic acrylic gel mediums. I used one with a low viscosity for the small ocean waves and normal ripples. I then used one much more dense, to simulate the water effects created by the destroyer and the depth charges explosions. The gel, once dried, it stays hard as if it was resin, and also stays transparent. Then I painted the high ripples with a diluted white and extended it with a soft bristled brush along the ripple and it's surrounding area. I did the same were the bubbly foam would stay after the ship passed, but with a more diluted white and more gentle passes with the brush.
Ill try to upload some better pictures were the effects are better seen once I complete the diorama.

Hi Kesha. If your are going to do it with resin, my main advise is to try and eliminate bubbles the best you can by pouring a litle bit and removing the bubles then repeating thee process till you get the desire amount. And id you put any object inside it ñ, try and seal it the best you can so no air can escape. Also, when tinting the resin, always think less is more. Try a few drops of the colors you want to use, and build it from there. Id recommend you buy some uv resin, to fix pieces quickly and to seal the mould in Wich you will plur the resin. And finally, don't be afraid, a big part of this hobby is to challenge us to exit our confort zone, and if you make a mistake, to learn from it. And please please, if you remember, once you start your diorama, please let me know. I'll love to follow your build.
Hi MrD, well I can't talk about other kits and other scales, but, for this one in particular, the quality was surprisingly good. The material was perfect, almost no flush. Also the details moulded in to the surface were incredibly good. It was my first kit from them, but I'm sure its not going to be the last. I've also looked the SBD, it looks amazing, I'll make sure to follow your build to inspire me if I end up buying that kit.

Hi all, just about to start the Tamiya Bristol Beaufighter 272 Squadron Malta and was wondering what Humbrol colour most people used for the underside instead of Tamiya XF18 as the best seems to be No.157 as No.96 is way to dark?

Welcome aboard Spanjaard.
I've decided I'm going to represent the plane putting out a wild fire. For that I will need to make the plane with the gear up and flaps down, wich the kit doesn't include an option for neither. I'm also going to make it with the water door open, so plenty of scratch builds for this project. It's going to be a long one again

Many online comments about this model mention being extra careful with fuselage construction, because there is a lot of plastic that can get in the way, due to the excellent interior detail.
They are right and I have used several modeling sessions just working to get that fit as good as i can.
Not real exciting stuff...no photos...but, it is time well spent.

After market rigging wire which don´t fit is very annoying. Where did you get these streamlined wire from RB? Seems like it is easy to find like a needle in the hay. But as far as your work: very nice progress! I am curious how it will look after all wires are at their place.

There has been what can only be described as a modeling disaster as the masks came off the windows....photos are almost too gruesome to post.
....not at all sure what went wrong but the paint just came up and the edges were ragged....there was a layer of primer over the clear plastic for sure...so, it was primed.
....there was a layer of glosscoat over the paint but not a thick coat...i thought....honestly, no clue what happened...
...bottom line, this Walrus is going to get done, but this canopy work will need some creativity and may show its character....

You know, no model is flawless 😉 A flawless model is just a packaged kit. As soon as you open the box, this dream is over.
The flash light is a bit strong?! I like the orange in pic30 more. But I know it's hard to get nice daylight photos in November.

Taking a seat. Very curious how the extra details will work - I have the base kit, but haven't decided whether to expand it with such nice details yet. Good luck!

You know guys who is the most curious on what and how I am gonna do? Me 😄 My philosophy is "just start, ask questions later". It is the most enjoyable approach, you encounter problems on the go, you find solutions, try new techniques and create new ideas. Which is very rewarding. And in the end you have a nice result. Not a perfect one, but one you can look back on and smile or shake your head...

I was planning to have lots of figures in this diorama, but the guy who uploaded this kit to Scalemates had guessed the scale as 1/100 and it is rather 1/250. Therefore my HO scale Greeks are completely overscale and will not be used.

I started with changes to the access steps, I had to saw these flush with the base as can be seen on reference pictures. Also I had to remove a terrible warp, I did this without a base plank by connecting the corners with thick wire and bending that. I found out that Italeri reconstructed the inner naos columns like on old drawings with both colonnades equal in length. Most of the modern day reconstructions show the top row smaller, so I sawed of the first row and used this as a lengthening part. I also made the architraves thinner, these are really ugly from the box with a slanting side.

Thanks for the tip, Ben, but I will solve the problem with some 1/200modern figures I got yesterday. I'll slice them and add 1mm, then cover it with a stola. I also had to perform lots of changes to the interior structure of the temple, using a floor plan I rescaled to 1/250. It appears Italeri has moved the pronaos and opisthodomos colonnades to the inside, to make up for the walls they made much thinner. I sawed out these floor parts and moved the colonnades to the outside. I thickened or replaced these walls with styrene. That meant engraving the outside of the styrene walls with block patterns. I also reversed some entrance walls because only one side of the gate part got a stone texture. I made the textureless side to go inside the wall. I moved the first two Ionic columns to fill the new space. I don't understand why Italeri is messing with the proportions of this building, just to be able to minimize the sprue variety to two shapes and as little wall surface as they could, while wanting to show off the inside. They also added the arm support to the statue, though that existed only on marble copies.

The increase in length of the sidewalls is compensated with the unused inner wall parts. The four cutouts are made but I changed the sizes by recutting each part. The inside of the walls is covered with the cutout parts, taking care to continue the masonry. Between the layers I will add another sheet of the same thickness to get to 4.5mm. I will have to use styrene for the plinths, all of these were used for the gates.

The inner walls are now connected to the outside with spacers. The plinths are machined from styrene plate so the walls fit to them. Four antes are added to the front walls. The inner tympanons are connected to the colonnade, that will fit in newly drilled postholes. I will remove the triglyphs there, they should only go on the outside and not be inclined. This colonnade isn't lined up with the outside anymore, the architrave will have to be skewed. More than 40 columns are now prepared.

The outside colonnads are completed with the different architrave lengths connected At first I tried to connect these in series but there is an inconsistency in the triglyph bases (guttae). This disappears when the parts are connected in parallel. I also removed th middle triglyph because this was split, I exchanged with a complete one. I cut the moved tympanons of the interior colonnades to make fit the roof parts. I also shifted the outside tympanons a few millimeter outward, so they would extend like on the pictures.

I feel like I need a degree in classics and one in architecture to follow this build. The corrections you are doing are fantastic. This will be something special when you are done. How will you paint it? Seems hard to get in all the nooks and crannies.

Thanks! I'll be using a Rustoleum Ivory spray can for primer. Then the usual modulating. It helps to have a degree in archaeology, there was even a small copy of that statue near my classroom.

I leveled the front walls with the middle structure and joined the ceiling parts after removing a small strip, so the pattern would match. Then I compared the 2 kit figures with some Schulcz figures I had. The kit figures are larger than 1 cm, so these are over 2 m 50 long in reality. They can only be used as statues. My added 1/200 figures are about 9mm to 7mm, so these are more realistic. To make them look like ancient Greeks, they are dressed in alu foil.

A small change was done to the front wall to improve symmetry. The base was filled in where I had changed components. One of the interior pillars was straightened and now the colonnade and the temple inner walls could be connected to the ceiling, that was only held up by the thin outside Italeri wall. For this a series of strips was cut out in thin styrene so all ceiling beams could get postholes in the outer walls. Then these strips were split in half so you get copies for each side. The same was done for the colonnades, but with a piece of sprue in between two strip halves. That creatded an architrave that could rest on the colonnade near the goddess statue. A smaller version was made for the rear room. Now the ceiling was completely closing up and I could create a link between the inner portals, that at this point were still two loose colonnades with a roof triangle on them. I closed up the ceiling on top of these with thicker styrene plate and then connected the portals with a 21 cm long sturdy strip. Like that, you can lift the two portals as a whole and dry-fit it on top of the inner walls. Now the only thing left was to finish the roof. I connected the four roof sections with a styrene plate and left some room for the distance that I had moved the outer tympanons. That gap was filled in with styrene and then the tile layers were sawn out of that, which took some time to do thoroughly. One last omission from Italeri are the imbrices on the roof, you only get the tegulae as continuous tile rows without the capping tiles between each of the two cover tiles. I currently have no solution for this IMO unnecessary omission; Italeri could simply have cast these vertical tile rows on the parts. I finished with adding the acroterions. Maybe I can look for an existing N-scale roof, because adding styrene tile profiles would be madness with about 10 meters needed.

The ancient Greeks are primered grey and the building is primered in marble colour. For the roof I have found a solution in Redutex stickers. These have the approximate dimensions of the roof, but will have to be cut up to fit exactly. Then they will also be repainted.

"Meden agan" is an ancient concept that doesn't apply to me... Today the painted figures have provided a sacrifice of animals, but the difference in scale means that they caught some aurochses in stead of regular oxen. I also covered the empty roof with Redutex tiles and painted these in marble color.

Thanks, Ben. The stone parts are now shadowed with Tamiya Dark Yellow 2 and then highlighted with white. The ceiling, doors and portals are masked to paint with Gunze Wood H37 and Tamiya Fieldgrey for bronze. The goddess statue was painted white too, then masked with gum and sprayed gold with a small rattle can.

Thanks mate! I use Depafit for the walls. It´s kind of styrofoam/ insulation board which is available at the hardware store. Very nice material to carve and easy to paint. Carved the damages with a pencil. Then lighlty sanded the whole surface. Applied a very thin blackgrey wash. Then painted different sand and greyish shades all thinned down to a wash.

But as you mention that... You know what i thougt when i saw photo 45, for the first time? Anyway just a two cent opinion. I'm not famliar with the 40s tank workshops, but bath rooms usualy have that kind of pavments and walls to ease the cleaning...😎

Hehe Rui I had the same idea with the locker floor 🙂 Got these floor tiles --> 3D Floor Tiles - Design A (Reality in Scale 35111, 1:35) Putting them on the floor or even on the wall it came out like a hotel or private bath room. They looked just too noble for a factory locker room. So I discarded the tiles and left the floor in it´s concrete look.

Thanks mates! @Spanjaard: Bad day for the youngster, he´s in charge for the beer later 🙂
@Norbert: basic material is Depafit, a styrofoam type. Available in your DIY store.
It´s more stable than Styrodur, comes with a lightly structured surface like plaster and can be sanded.
First I carve any structures like damages etc.
Next steps apply to the the whole wall:
First coat with silver grey, once dry another coat with a mix of 50/50 silvergrey and pale grey is painted. Once this coat is dry a black wash is done, to create a good contrast for the details. Therefore the wash should be pretty thin to keep a good balance between base color and black.
Once this has dryed properly, the whole wall is sanded with 600 sanding paper. The sanding brings variation into the colors, as the black is removed more or less in certain areas and releases the base color.
Finally certain areas receive detail painting using a less thinned black wash for deeper areas such as cracks. Base color, white grey and any other colors at your desire are used to highlight certain details, like edges of cracks.
I found this technique in the "bible" of styrofoam modeling by Emmanuel Nouaillier. Absolutely worth having that in stash. --> amazon.de/Perfekt-bi..tungen/dp/3837511634

Very Nice plumbing 👍 😄 Nice progress.
The figures look good but the one with the head looking upward looks a bit forced. I think the eyes could do part of the rotation not the head, just my two cent, Mate 🤔

Thanks Olivier! I´m quite happy with this technique as it applies to all scales and is quite easy and cheap, achieving nice results.
@Rui: Thanks and you´re right, the position of the head brings pain in the neck 🙂 I cut the necks a bit and rotated the heads to a more healthy position 🙂

I'm glad that my humble constructive opinion matters . Thx 👍
IMHO, one thing that i have noticed in the modelers who use these extremely well detailed heads is that they leave the necks too long and end up ruining their very realistic appearance even when they are excellently painted😎

@rui the proper length of necks is a tricky job. Lots of factors such as age, constitution, body shape etc need to be considered. I struggle here as well figuring out the best solution. Though I appreciate any hints 🙂

Thank you for your encouraging comments, mates! Your patient attention to this neverending project is much appreciated!
@Slavo: For an American Chopper he definitely misses a beard, though it´s only a German Chopper :-D
Next face completed during the weekend. This one was not going as well as the first one. As the expression is different to the first one, the surface and details are much smoother. Found it quite tough to place highlights and shadows at the right spots. Challenged my patience seriously.

I think this is my first time with an ICM mold. The kit has a lot of flash and is very subtle in its markings. This creates a bit of a challenge cleaning things up because I have to stop and figure out what to take away and what to keep. But I think when everything is cleaned up it should be pretty straightforward.

There was one piece that was too big to fit. The instructions said that it was the backing for the control panel for the navigator. I started filing it down but then realized that Revell screwed up the instructions and it was actually the pilot's headboard. Now I have to repair the headboard.

Well I blamed Revell for getting the instructions wrong but when I checked the ICM instructions they had the same mistake. The piece clearly belongs behind the pilot if you look at the kit. So either the engineers who designed the kit got it wrong or the graphics department got something wrong. Either way I went with the kit and not the instructions.

Hi Skyhiker 👋
Always pays to give paint good drying time before more work, l like 48hrs on main airframe, probably why l tend to have couple of builds on the go ..... something to do between drying periods.
Looking good , l always hand paint my wheels, lve done 67 in 2yrs 🫣
Good luck on next steps 👍

I got the base layer of RLM71 down. I'm not happy with the windows but I couldn't sand them down flat without damaging a lot of details. I'll have to see how it looks when the paint is dry.

Good job on the camo, every plane probably has variations in camo so box art is good, it does work well as a camouflage that pattern, breaks up the profile well.

As I said on Focke-Wulf project, I'm starting to clear out the shelf of doom and this project was a parallel to the The Battlefield - The Black Knight of Berlin (part 1) | Album by strobez (1:144) - mainly because the Platz boxes came with two kits in one. However, even though I've long since finished the Black Knight project, the "alternates" have sat warming the shelf ever since. About time I completed them. Truth be told, some of the early pictures in this project are also the same ones published as part of the Black Knight ones... but they're separate projects and represent a twin build process, so I'm hopefully forgiven.

Now with an updated pic. Does anyone else have a problem with Tamiya XF-16 Aluminium getting a bit "splotchy" using Tamiya masking tape? No matter how long I let it dry (and in this case is was almost a whole year!), I always seem to end up removing a bit of the paint and leaving "tape marks" behind. I'll have to remask the coloured bits and give it another coat of XF-16 I think, but what a pain.

Got the decals on. The Platz ones went on like a dream, but for the larger yellow numbering on the engine cowl, I cut up some decals from the Hasegawa F11F kit I had leftover after one of my Area 88 builds (AREA 88: F11F-1 (Gary Macburn) | Project by strobez (1:72)). The ancient decals disintegrated almost instantly on my first attempt. I got it done eventually. Now just the propellor and a few minor adjustments left to work on.
