First pictures of the first steps in the construction of a B-17G, whose mission role particularly appealed to me: I had long been fascinated by the sea rescue missions of this B-17 equipped with a droppable lifeboat! So I was delighted when I found one of the rare kits on the subject here on scalemates.
A few months ago I had already built an Academy 'Flying Fortress' in an early B version, the kit qualities of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The accuracy of fit is not far from 'perfect' and the details that are often missing in these Academy kits have to be added wherever it is important. In this case that means A set of etched parts for the cockpit and nose area, as well as an exterior set, especially for the engines and undercarriage, and resin tyres, also from Eduard. Not to forget: the seat cushions from Kits World were used in the cockpit

That makes me happy, Łukasz and Finn!
The SB-17G is slowly taking shape. The V-position of the wings needs to be changed: in my opinion, Academy has set a much too steep angle here! The corrected position of the wings also results in the distances at the wing-fuselage bonding points.... the fit here would be excellent!

In preparation for the surface colours, I have now done the following: I have masked those stripes over the black primer that are to remain visible as black lines separating the NMF surfaces from the large yellow zones using suitably wide Tamiya masking tape. I also masked the areas on the leading edges that carry the rubber 'de-icers'.
Next, the anti-glare areas in front of the cockpit and on the inside of the engine nacelles are sprayed, then.... then come the Alclad metal colours!

There was not much to see of the SB-17 for a short time - the application of the yellow required extensive masking!

Looks like the installation of a new boiler... but is the very first shell of the 'Trevithick', the first steam locomotive....
The vintage kit doesn't appear to be bad and quite well thought out, only the plastic material in an unhealthy-soapy looking green plastic made me a little uneasy. But it will be fine! 🙂
I'm really looking forward to the next steps - a highly interesting and refreshingly different topic!

The main assemblies have now been completed. Care must be taken here to clean up the numerous ejection marks and the many moulding protrusions, but that's the only thing holding it up 🙂
The colours on the parts shown are, apart from the primer with black acrylic paint, Alclad II metal paints, namely Gunmetall, Steel... and above all Alclad ''Panzer Grey''. Traces of various shades of pastel crayon brown have been applied on top with a dry brush.

Hello Rene, the seat is happily yours, but the show is already over 🙂
I am proud to present you the completed 'Trevithick'! It was great fun taking photos of this gearwheel, linkage and flywheel work of wonder. Please excuse the resulting large number of pictures.
This time Alclad paints were used for the colour scheme, but not only from the metal range: what you see here is Alclad's 'Panzergrau' primer, together with 'Gunmetal' and 'Smoke' and similar shades. I have replaced the plastic parts for the push rods with metal bars. I hope you like the result as much as I enjoyed building it!

Wasn't happy with the "light blue" the kit called for. Bought some Testors blue metal flake, and blended some gloss white in to try and get a closer approximation of the engine color. Also took some liberties with the oil pan. Instead of keeping it blue, I mixed some flat aluminum with some flat brass. Two shots of the intake manifold show the light blue previously used, and the darker custom shade I mixed.

After most of the parts were put together, I ran a black wash over all of it to highlight the textures and give it a "oily/dirty" look. So used to doing that with acrylics, that I forgot that it wants to remove the paint I'm going over. Overall, not too bad for the first model I've touched in 25 years.

And I thought starting my third such kit from KP/RV Aircraft is self torture. The truth is, once you had finished one of them in the past, the frustration decreases with each new one.

Any idea how you will treat the taxiing lights?
5 May, 07:34
Thomas Kolb
Marius, I honestly don't think this kit is so terrible. There are some fit issues for sure, but I have built much worse kits. I constantly keep reminding myself that I only do this for relaxation and fun, and not for a competition or as a profession.

Are you referring to the swiveling landing lights underneath the intakes?
5 May, 07:50
Marius
Thomas, I share your opinion about the kit and hobby too actually. The kit is dreadful in a few areas, but overall more than decent. I finished two of these already and I must say, they really stand out my collection, despite the kit's reputation.

Yes, I was refering to those lights. If I remember it correctly, there are some transparent parts included in the kit, but the intakes are completely flat, where the lights should go. I made the mistake to install those lights in the closed position, instead of the more interesting setup, when they are deployed downwards. In any case, it's just a heads up, in case you might want to add some extra detailing.
5 May, 08:34
Thomas Kolb
Yes, I see your point regarding those lights, but I will probably just stick to my usual middle road - easy to accomplish and still produces a cool result. 🙂

Martin von Schreckenstein

7 May, 21:23

Martin, I saw your MiG-23 project - it is way more ambitious than mine! I am not so meticulous, just very, very slow, only having an hour or two to spend here and there.
8 May, 07:53
Thomas Kolb
A bit of a setback here. I just realized that I had foolishly been following the assembly drawings and thus ended up with the wings upside down. Bottom side up and vice versa. It may not be something that is easily noticeable, but knowing myself, I would never be able to unsee it now. So I am backtracking my steps and need to change the way the wings are facing without ruining the fuselage. Mamma mia, what a noob mistake-a to make-a.

Hi Thomas, nice progress. I think the Tamiya paints are my favourite so far. They apply well and they don't smell so strongly.

Cristian, yes, they are mine too. They also react superbly well to the Mr Color Leveling thinner and level out to perfection. Too bad that the color range is a bit narrow, you need to mix almost everything.

If l cut an item of the spru and it has a possibility of mix up, l up a little bit of making tape with part number on it to label it up, l do this as made this mistake before with wheel bay doors !! " Wanded when so much sanding needed!" 😆.
Every build has it's niggle...once it's been on shelf a month...soon forget, good work
8 June, 22:21
Thomas Kolb
Mr D, yes, it's a good tip. But it doesn't help when the assembly drawing is wrong! The best is to constantly keep referring to real photos - sometimes even apex companies, such as Tamiya, Special Hobby or Eduard make silly mistakes.
9 June, 06:18
Mr D
I know, I'm doing a Tamiya and they missed of colour required for 3 different parts!
9 June, 08:41
Thomas Kolb
The masking of the standard single seater is a pretty relaxing task, but Iván The Terrible (no 20), with its blotchy, multi-color camo is proving a real challenge. I am trying to add the colors in the order as they were applied on the real aircraft to make the pattern realistic, but man, it is tricky!

Great MiG! I suppose the original one did not survive Israeli air raids during Six Day War…
30 May 2023, 17:33
Marius
Thank you Franconian for the comment, I am happy you like it!

I can't tell much about the number 2300 itself. But as a matter of fact, the SyAAF was by no means battered in the first day of the war, unlike the wide spread perception. I have written a little bit about this in my Syrian MiG-21F-13 project (MiG-21F-13 - Syria - 1967 | Project by Redicus (1:72)). There were plans made even before the war to evacuate the aircraft to the northern airbases in case of an Israeli attack. Since Egyptian bases were hit first, there was some time to save most aircraft. A few Syrian MiG-17s were still hit on ground, but most Syrian MiG-17s lost during the Six Day War were actually lost during ground attacks against the advancing IDF shot down by ground fire during rather uncoordinated or chaotic actions. I don't have exact numbers right now but I can recheck the literature if needed. It is hard to say how many actually survived the Six Day War, but many certainly lived long enough to see extensive action later in 1973. I am actually working on another Syrian MiG-17 from 1973 (with camouflage painting).
