Thanks for joining guys. Hornet is ready for primer. Overall a very good fit of the parts except bomb bay cover. There was an unusual gap that had to be filled. Found out some YouTubeers had the same issue. Canopy masking was ok, but very time consuming (recommend an after market masking set). The fit of the 3 canopy parts is perfect (just a small bend on the middle part of the canopy that could be easily compensated by not following the manual and glue the middle section first on the backside). Let me know in case you see any doubts - I´m kind of greenhorn to scale modeling and this is my first 1:72 scale kit ... thx

@Pietro and @Alec: many thanks - I appreciate your feedback. To answer Alec's question on the prop wear: props have been painted in aluminum first, then a very think layer of chipping fluid. Once dry I applied RLM02 and more or less immediately after applying the paint I chipped RLM02 so small areas of aluminum came through. After a layer of semi-gloss coat I repeated the same procedure with black over chipping fluid and finished with semi-gloss varnish. Small scratches were done with a weathering pencil. As it turned out quite acceptable I try to apply the same process on other weared areas on wings and fuselage … quite excited how it will show there

This is getting more interesting. Are Airfix paying you for advertising? 🙂

Thanks Jivko - I appreciate your kind feedback. It's my first Airfix kit and first 1/72 scale and initially it was planned as a test build for this scale before I do other planes like eduard BF109. Turned out different 😂

Nothing wrong with airfix, especially the newer kits - they can be quite nice 😀

@Michael: for this kit I totally agree. Just some small fitting issues, but nothing really to worry. On the manuals, especially paint scheme, there is room for improvement on this kit

Thomas, I'm following you. Quite literally. The plane has just appeared in a shop in Sofia. Accordingly, on my work table. I have a question. Are the pre-paintings aimed at two-tone aging?

@Jivko: happy to hear that I inspired you ☺️ . I hope you enjoy the build as much as I do and I´m very interested in your build. To be honest with you I don´t know yet ... I played around with some colors and decided to give it a try with this kind of pre color shading. I think it could turn out as a kind of tonal variation to make the big one color lower side a little bit more interesting. Not sure if I do the same on the upper side ... I will share pictures of the half side painted in RLM76 once it´s done. I'm not very skilled with the airbrush so I´m a little bit scared of this task 🤣

Today I finally managed to paint RLM76 underside. Pre-shading came out acceptable, even if it´s hard to see on the picture. Not sure if I should do something similar on the upper side or just use some stencil masks with a light color ... any ideas from your side?

@Jivko thanks - I will think about it … maybe just do pre-shading on some panels with lighter color on the upper side. I explained single steps on prop wear to Alec some comments above - check it and in case you have any further questions, drop me a message.

@Thomas, weathering pencil? I have AK 10033 aluminum, is that what you are working with?

@Jivko: I used white one from AK, but aluminum should be fine, too. Pencil was only used for the fine and longer scratches, e.g. on the prop that points to the right. Close to the spinner you can find a „X" shape scratch. That and all similar looking ones were done with the pencil

Hi Guys, just added latest status pics. I have a question to the more expirienced modelers here: in picture 18 you can see 2 Vallejo RLM colors I used. Both ordered 2-3 weeks ago from the same shop and the bottle design is different. Also the smell is different, but both are labeled as Model Air. I couldn´t find any information about Vallejo Model Air with the label design of the right one. Any info on your side? Is the right one a very old one? The one with the unusual (to me unusual) label design did not spray as good as the paint from the well known bottle design. Thanks

I received one with the right hand side labelling for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I assumed this was a new label??

I also got one with the new label and share your experience - it's crap.
One retailer told me this is the new formula and will replace the existing ones and another retailer did not know anything about new bottles.
I would rather switch to another brand than using the new ones.

@Guy and Thomas: thanks - so it seems to be something new ... It´s a pity that there is no official information from Vallejo. Looks like we don´t even know what we will receive at the time you place on order at any retailer. I don´t like that at all @Thomas: I would not say it´s crap, but different. I really like the "old" ones ... what a shame from a brand like Vallejo doing something like that 😒

ok - my comment was a bit harsh. I agree - and what I also missed to mention was that your Messerschmitt looks excellent! Like the subtle chipping and will copy the pre-shading concept in different colours 👍

I'm way behind. I will not make excuses for not using the technique with several colors placed in advance. I plan to test this on some plane I have in the scrap these days.

@Thomas: well, if your opinion is that they are scrap, why not to say that ... I think there is nothing wrong and we should be happy to be allowed to say our opinion. We all have different preferences so some brands work for one modeler, but don´t for others. I personally don´t get AK 3rd gen to work well on very fine airbrushing ... will come with experience ... Thank you for your kind words - I appreciate that and I´m happy you found some inspiration for your projects. The colors I choose were not ideal. The brown on black primer didn´t really show any big effect. White instead was very nice and could be blended really good into a shaded RLM76 and also on the upper wing side. So I don´t recommend brown as a pre-shading color on black primer. It might be different on grey primer.
@Jivko: I didn´t know we have a challange ... 😂

Small update available @Jivko: when I was thinking of how to do the mottling, I recognized that RLM76 has to go further up on the fuselage. Manual is quite misleading and I found one reference picture that made it clear to me how far it goes towards the wings. Hope this helps you for your project. Mottling and swastika to painted to complete paintwork

@Vincent thank you for your kind words. I'm happy with the result and to be honest, I didn't expect this result when I thought about a 2 layer chipping first time. It´s my first try and doing it on 1/72 scale was a bit "over motivated" but in the end I learned something new: the key is to be very careful when applying chipping fluid and not to overdo it

Impressive work! Your chipping is spot on!
I've read that masking chipped area can complicated (paint lifting with tape where the chipping fluid was applied) but you seem to manage just fine. Do you think the coat of varnish is what prevented paint lifting?

@Jennifer and @Clement: thank you so much for your kind words - I appreciate your feedback 😊 @Clement: I didn´t have issues with any kind of paint lifts. Maybe it was the semi-gloss varnish that gave a little more stick to the paints. But as this is the first time I try chipping with chipping fluid I don´t have any other experience.

Hi Guys, Jennifer: She is done - I didn´t upload any pictures of decal application or final weathering steps. I will share some more detailed pictures in the way I do it usually, a separate album with final shooting pics. It was a pleasure to see all your feedback, your nice words, your motivation, .... during the build. To be honest with myself, this is the first finished build I can count the mistakes I made and still see on one hand, definitely one of my best builds so far. I totally can recommend this kit, it has superb fitting and nice details. Room for improvement is on the manual, especially the paint scheme is a little bit misleading sometimes. Cheers & happy modeling to all of you 😊
