BA-20 Construction
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/0/0/9/56009-10244-99-pristine.jpg)
Frame with exhaust and rear suspension dry-fitted
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/0/1/0/56010-10244-75-pristine.jpg)
Frame, exhaust, cooler, steering rod and suspension pre-painted
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/0/1/1/56011-10244-52-pristine.jpg)
Frame fitted to the lower chassis
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/0/1/2/56012-10244-68-pristine.jpg)
Wheels and brake drums pre-painted
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/0/1/3/56013-10244-15-pristine.jpg)
Wheels fixed (nearly no profile on the wheels) and weathering started.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/0/1/4/56014-10244-10-pristine.jpg)
Upper chassis with ejector pin marks.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/0/1/5/56015-10244-13-pristine.jpg)
Base coat inside upper chassis. I don't like the colour of the seats and will change this..
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/0/1/6/56016-10244-60-pristine.jpg)
Replaced handles on the engine hood with wire ones.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/2/3/0/57230-10244-60-pristine.jpg)
Outside door handles replaced with wire.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/2/3/1/57231-10244-45-pristine.jpg)
Inside door handles also replaced with wire.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/9/3/2/60932-10244-71-pristine.jpg)
Since the first door handles were a bit to big, I changed it using thinner wire.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/9/3/3/60933-10244-28-pristine.jpg)
The offset of the molds is quite challenging sometimes. Check out the position lights. Right side - the original, left side - reworked one.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/5/0/61250-10244-45-pristine.jpg)
Bulb of headlight made by using the head of needle!
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/3/7/0/61370-10244-27-720.jpg)
Tried something new for me as a brush-painter - PRESHADING! I don't know, if it will have any effect on the final result. I'll find out.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/3/7/1/61371-10244-21-pristine.jpg)
Headlights completed. The white bulbs do look quite good, but silver ones would been more realistic. At least the positonlights on the fender look better than before (check pic 12 for comparison).
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/3/7/2/61372-10244-19-pristine.jpg)
Taillights painted with silver, clear red and and a coat of gloss varnish.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/6/4/9/61649-10244-88-pristine.jpg)
First coat of paint is done. There isn't much left of the pre-shading.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/6/5/0/61650-10244-44-pristine.jpg)
Another coat of paint might be necessary.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/6/5/1/61651-10244-42-pristine.jpg)
A bit of the pre-shading can be seen on hood, but the painting isn't very smooth. The roof will have to be painted once more.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/8/4/3/61843-10244-64-pristine.jpg)
As long as you close the radiator covers, you can leave them as they are. Since I'll go to show them open, I cut off the excess, which isn't there in reality.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/8/4/4/61844-10244-51-pristine.jpg)
The radiator covers can be opened/closed from inside the car by a wire. I try to replicate this using aluminium foil and thin wire.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/8/5/1/61851-10244-55-pristine.jpg)
Radiator covers in place. You don't see much anymore of the opening mechanism.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/7/3/62773-10244-87-pristine.jpg)
Front with open radiator covers
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/7/4/62774-10244-55-pristine.jpg)
The only tool on this vehicle.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/7/5/62775-10244-70-pristine.jpg)
The upper chassis still needs to be pushed down at the back.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/7/6/62776-10244-87-pristine.jpg)
The wheels still need some clear satin coat, then a slight weathering will follow.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/0/1/6/63016-10244-60-pristine.jpg)
No scratches, just a bit of dirt.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/0/1/7/63017-10244-27-pristine.jpg)
Not very fancy, bit good enough for me.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/0/1/8/63018-10244-84-pristine.jpg)
That's it as far as I'm ready to go now..

Planned to be finished within one weekend.... 🙁 It shouldn't happen.
Lot of filler needed. Mold seams are quite extensive. It's more hand-crafting than just glue together, but it's still fun. 😄

![](/profiles/img/12987-s.jpg)
Looking good so far. I have a bunch of projects that started out as weekend builds😉

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Hi Roy, initial idea was to build it OOTB, just to get something ready, before I continue the other projects. 30 years ago it would have worked, but now...?
Once one looked at reference pics it starts. Hmm, this looks different and could be changed. And this, and that, and...

![](/profiles/img/11200-s.jpg)
Maybe it will last longer than only one weekend but I think the result will be great!

Thanks for the support, guys! I'm fighting with the interior white. I guess, this will become the only colour, I will spray in future. Need to get a bottle of spray white....

Nearly no progress. Just replaced inside and outside door handles with wire.
I had to break up the upper hull again, because it didn't fit straight on the lower hull.

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks, Holger!
Hmm, hast Recht, Frank. 🙁

Upps, sorry - Ralf! 😳 Hmmm, das Alter kommt durch!

If you were wondering, why there was no progress, have a look at pic no. 12 and compare right and left position light on the front fenders.
The offset of the molds is quite challenging sometimes. So I couldn't decide what to do until I made a decision today and cut off all the excess mold.
I also changed the door handles thanks to Ralf Schuster's advise (Thanks, Ralf). I hope they do look better now.

Some more pics added. I tried something new - at least new for me as a brush-painter - preshading. I have no idea, if this will have any effect on the final result. We'll see.

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks, guys! That's the motivation I need to get this one done.
@Roy: A bit more than 20 years ago I made a try with a badger airbrush and messed up a Tamiya Jagdpanther. So I decided that it is not my thing and continued with (H)airbrushes...
@Acki: Those big headlights looked so empty. What else should I do?😉
Scheint, da ist was hängengeblieben.

looking good frank, i have always liked the Russian armored cars i wish a company would do a new mold of one of them.
1 May 2013, 22:03
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks, William! I still do hope that MiniArt will hear the voices of Russian armour fans and do some BA-1, -3, -6, -10 based on their fantastic GAZ-AAA.
1 May 2013, 22:13
![](/profiles/img/12853-387-s.jpg)
thanks, frank i never thought about Miniart's GAZ-AAA might be able to kit bash that with the Eastern Express BA-6, add some photo-etch and a little elbow grease, might turn out a decent kit. now I'm going to be scouring Ebay

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks guys! Yesterday it got his first coat of paint and looks different now. Just 2 parts to add and construction is finished. Let's see, where we'll get to.
2 May 2013, 17:22
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
No, Holger! No progress on the 251. The BA-20 was planned as something within between to relax, but...

I've never built tanks. But my eyes say, this looks good .....well done

![](/profiles/img/10923-723-s.jpg)
Hi Frank, I'm looking forward to the result of the pre-shading with brush, but you are a master of painting with brushes,so no worry mate, great result so far on this BA-20

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks, guys, for your encouraging words.
@Philip: I've uploaded 3 more pics with the first result. The overall impression - uneven paintresult. The roof for sure must be painted once again. The other parts - I'm thinking about to leave it like it is with minor corrections, because it gives the BA-20 a used look. A coat with satin clear enamel should do it followed by washes and detail painting.

![](/profiles/img/10923-723-s.jpg)
That looks already fantastic Frank, keep us informed of the result of the paintjob!
This will be another beauty Frank😉 looking forward to the endresult

![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Some update on detailing. I thinned the radiator covers and added the open-/closing mechanism made of household goods. Once assembled to the hood you don't see much anymore of the mechanism.
5 May 2013, 14:26
![](/profiles/img/12716-321-s.jpg)
Great detail! But you better turn the headlights off or you'll drain the battery😉
6 May 2013, 12:07
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thanks for the hint, George! Turned off the lights and "took out" the battery...😉
6 May 2013, 15:50
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
More pics added. Assembly is completed. Now the wheels still need some clear satin coat. Then I will do some weathering, but not so much.
10 May 2013, 18:07
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Well, last 3 pics added. Just a bit dirt added, no scratches or heavy weathering. Nothing to win any prices, but it looks good in the showcase. So that's it for me for the time being.
12 May 2013, 14:28
![](/profiles/img/12716-321-s.jpg)
You can't get any better than making it look like the real thing! Great build!
12 May 2013, 15:06
![](/profiles/img/12974-745-s.jpg)
Maybe you could put it in a diorama with a bit of soapy water on the car and the crew washing it?😉 But i still like it 🙂

![](/profiles/img/12630-641-s.jpg)

13 January 2014, 10:37
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Thank you, guys, that you like my old BA-20.
13 January 2014, 17:38
![](/profiles/img/10244-398-s.jpg)
Ehrlich gesagt keine Ahnung, Jens.
