I am just so engrossed in it, and I have seen other builds on the net, and from what I have seen, it should turn out quite OK mate. 🙂

Your attention to detail is amazing Kerry and I mean it in the nicest possible way when I say you're a freak. You set the bar very high mate. 🙂
14 May 2015, 10:49
Kerry COX
Ben, Thank you for that fantastic compliment mate. 🙂
First and foremost, I am an engineer and a problem solver, and I just happen to present myself with a problem each build I do, and I just have to work out the best outcome for my self. I really cant explain it any other way, but my solutions always seem to be very complicated, but they are solved , and I think that this is the reason I love my hobby and so do all of my mates out there, it's the end result we all get and the tour we took to get there.

I also love the fact that we can all see what we do, INSTANTLY. A whole lot better than waiting for a magazine once a month, as here, We get a whole years submissions here in one week.

That drives all of us to do better, and show how well we have done it, and then hand out all the slaps on the back in the world, or, help someone with a kind and supportive comment and tip or trick.

I love being a freak, and that is the nicest thing you can call me, a badge I am happy to wear. 🙂

Cheers for that. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hey Kerry, dont you wish you have a 1/8 scale aircraft to put your engine into
14 May 2015, 17:32
Kerry COX
You should see the aircraft that this crowd make mate. I will find the link and take a deco yourself. Oh YES !!!🙂

This is looking pretty good Kerry. Love the extra detail with the locking wire.

Nice Work. I think this Kit is a must habe.
16 May 2015, 15:34
Kerry COX
This kit has been around for a while, and as the Monogram "Cyclone" radial is no longer in production, this one is the more challenging of the two.

Here is the link to where I got it.

Hey Kerry, are you some kind of machinist? I see you are using brass tubing and wire, very nice details.
16 May 2015, 18:50
Kerry COX
Good morning John, and I have been known to run a lathe or two in my day, as I am a qualified engineer mate. 🙂 But the copper and alloy will give the motor a sharp look and finish, because the original pushrod tubes failed in the detail dept miserably. 🙁

And it is beautifully detailed in everything else, so a bit of hardware was called for. :-/

cheers. 🙂
16 May 2015, 21:24
John Young
Hi Kerry, as others have said the level of detail is brilliant. What are you using for a reference?
17 May 2015, 08:06
Kerry COX
Hi John, I am gleaning as much visual information from Every photograph of the "Wasp" I can find on the web, and I have tried contacting Pratt and Whitney themselves for some more information, but they are kind of hard to nail down.

If you like, in the build pictures, I can post some of the images I have been using that shows the level of detail I am attempting to replicate if you like. 🙂
Cheers. 🙂

Hi Kerry, I'd enjoy seeing the images. I'm getting back into modeling after a 30 year hiatus :-P I'm aspiring to build some air to mud slow movers. When I get to the propeller iron I'd like to make fair effort at detailing and your work is inspiring me!
17 May 2015, 12:05
Kerry COX
Mr Young. 🙂 30 years away from our hobby is indeed a wee bit of time, but you will feel right at home here with all these amazing people. I spent some time away from it as I was just not being excited by what was on the market, but now, there is so much subject matter now, the choices really have become endless.

Welcome back to your second childhood......with attitude. LOL 🙂

Holy Moly what a nice progress Kerry!
17 May 2015, 18:36

Outstanding work Kerry. I like the secure wiring (I'm not sure if this sounds correct) on the bolts. The best model engine the I've seen.
17 May 2015, 20:38
Kerry COX
Bernhard, Thank you so much my friend, and all the other mates who have supported me.
That is the exact terminology mate. And you will see this tie wire in one of the images I posted, on the real engine, so I am not making up stuff to look good. I am really trying to copy what is actually there. ! 🙂
17 May 2015, 22:32
George Bacon
Terrific work Kerry! 👍👍👍. I always wanted to see one of these kits. Looks like you just need a little petrol and caster oil to start it up!
18 May 2015, 23:28

Wow Kerry this looks so authentic, fantastic work you show to us here ! 🙂
19 May 2015, 08:51
Kerry COX
Hanno, I thank you my friend and I had to pull back on the detailing a bit, as the wire ties were just too much, so The rest is just the push rod covers, the ignition and the 'go gear' on the back of the motor. 🙂
19 May 2015, 11:40
Kerry COX
I have just done some major surgery on the oil line connections on the heads.
I cut the pins that the hose was originally attached (Img 95), drilled a hole where the peg used to be (Img96), cut the tip off a dressmakers pin and replaced the cut pins with metal pins(Img97), making the whole thing look 1000% better with new hosing that is not deformed. (Img98) 🙂
20 May 2015, 01:07
Steve -
Kerry, Well aren't you doing just a great job. 👍 Always wanted to do one of these models and you sure make it tempting to search one out; 'cause its not like I don't have enough un-built models in my stash already 😛
Here in the U.S. we call the secure wiring your doing , "safety wiring" .
.............................................FYI: navyaviation.tpub.com/14014/css/14014_116.htm
If memory serves, 🤔 there is an expected "correct number" of turns (of the wire) between the bolts/nuts to be FAA acceptible.
20 May 2015, 06:25
Kerry COX
On NO, don't do the correct number of turns of the wire on me mate :-O !!!
But from what your link says, it is ok to have the twist start and finish at each bolt head.
"Step 4. Pull the loop tight against the bolt head. Grasp both ends of the wire. Twist them in a clockwise direction until the end of the braid is just short of the second bolt."
I tried to do just that with each one I have done, and I am NOT undoing them for anyone. LOL 🙂

But thanks for the info mate. 🙂

Haha, Steve, you brought back an old memory. Let's ship Kerry off to Memphis, TN to learn how to use a set of these princessauto.com/en/..st-plier/A-p8434854e
20 May 2015, 10:27
Kerry COX
Hey Rex. Do they see them in 1/8 scale for idiots like me I wonder Ha Ha Ha 🙂
20 May 2015, 11:21
Kerry COX
The tests start after the carburettors' are tuned Christian 🙂
20 May 2015, 11:22
Steve -
Ben: you are too right 😛 - we're a small but select sub-group of the IRCS-PIA (international rivet counters society-Pain in ...well you get the idea) 😄

Rex: as good as Kerry is doing on his own, it would be a shame to give him a real tool- he might do himself an injury 😄 😄

Kerry: please understand I wasn't criticizing your efforts- mighty fine as they are 👍. I "only" meant to pass along some of my surplus of totally irrelevant facts--🤔 learned at my father's knee- sitting near the fireplace - on cold nights- strumming our guitars- and listening to the cattle low in the back ground- or some such drivel 😉
21 May 2015, 04:52
Rex
LOL, Steve,,,,,,,I just thought of a Great Purple Heart story. "there I was, in Millington, minding my own business, I had just finished riveting a Pabst Can on the side of a Phantom, when the Gunny walked up to me to teach me how to safety wire some bolts. I looped the wire through the first bolt head, inserted the wire into the wire tie pliers and gave it a spin. I woke up with a Navy Corpsman standing over me, with blood gushing out of my thumb,,,,,,,seems you aren't supposed to leave a foot of wire sticking out of the side of the pliers when you spin it up" (Purple Heart because it was during training for 'Nam and the wire was made in China?,,,,,,lol)

"Next week is going to be worse,,,,,,I will probably make 10,000 modelers mad at me when they teach me how to use the pressure washer to clean an aircraft"
21 May 2015, 06:07
Kerry COX
Oh my Lord.!!! Where have you guys been hiding all these years. 🙂 🙂 🙂
The IRRC-PIAS have been after me for years to become a member, but I keep knocking them back based on the "Artistic Licence" clause in the IPMS's constitution, but now that I see their membership includes you lot, I just might have a change of heart and accept their lucrative offer.

As for Rexe's "Bleeding heart" story, I only have one question. Was the Pabst can a full or partially consumed one. ?🙂

Did the thumb recover well ? (( 🙂 ))

21 May 2015, 11:10

Kerry, the Pabst can part was real,,,,,,,,they used those old steel cans as "practice patches" to teach how to repair battle damage. I wrote the fictional wire pliers part just for you. (as a man hurt in the real Marines, I can tell you that there weren't Purple Hearts given out for Stateside training injuries, hah)

Jeffrey Riedesel
Awesome project!
22 May 2015, 05:59
Kerry COX
Thanks Jeff, I am just about finished, and I am waiting on a large P&W 'eagle' Decal from Pratt & Whitney that I will be putting on a plinth that the engine will eventually stand on. Hopefully it will look as good as my mind eye sees it !. 🙂
22 May 2015, 06:26
John Young
@Kerry - I'm confident this will look brilliant on the stand.

@Rex - Did you start with 100MPH tape or jump straight to sheet metal work? ; )
22 May 2015, 10:54
Kerry COX
Yes John, my imagination was inspired when I looked at the P & W website and saw that they sell merchandise all relating to the brand, and so I bought a 6" decal for the plinth and a "Wasp" tie pin and a peak cap (Baseball type) with the P&W logo embroidered on it. 🙂
22 May 2015, 11:05
Christian Bruer
That comes out better and better. I much like the transparent oil lines with metal clamps!
22 May 2015, 18:45
Rex
Kerry, you just have to show us a pic of you wearing that P&W ballcap.
22 May 2015, 19:04
Rex
John,,,,,some might not believe this,,,,,but, in the military aviation community, we were "counting rivets" from the very first day of airframe training. In the Jet community, you have to account for EVERYTHING that was around the jet engines,,,,,tools were counted and you couldn't bring extra unauthorized tools in the tool box, etc.

And if you drilled a rivet out of an airframe (very common thing to do), you had to account for both halves of the rivet when it parted and came off. So, that makes Aviation Mechs some of the pioneers in the field of Rivet Counting. FOD was such a big deal, so it made sense to not want to be "that guy" that left a wrench lie in the wrong place, or missed counting half of a rivet and finding out that you caused an engine to succomb to Foreign Object Damage. Heck, even in the Prop community, if you have ever been hit by a stone thrown up by a prop that can pull an airplane at 400 mph, you won't soon forget that.
22 May 2015, 19:10
Kerry COX
Rex, Good morning. 🙂 5.28am here in Oz.
Mate, you are talking to a qualified engineer here, (Industrial plumbing) and I do totally understand what you are talking about when It comes to being vigilant and being totally aware of all that is in your 'zone'. and being accountable/responsible for all you use/touch. Other flags I fly include being a small engine technician, (stationary Honda powered fire pumps) and motorcycle engines.
As for being around "V" vehicles, I have no experience, but your time in the flight line must have been just as enjoyable as it could be, knowing you got everything 'right'.
Even modelling today, I am quite pedantic about having everything 'in it's place' or well contained, as the last thing I need to hear is my floor space at my feet give a healthy burp from feasting on anything I failed to account for.
I should imagine your much the same.
22 May 2015, 19:52
Kerry COX
Christian, thanks for your comment on the oil lines and clamps. I am using for the clamps some industrial air-conditioning chrome 'duct' tape that is used when joining the tubes of ducting.
It's as thin as aluminium foil and the adhesive is really strong, but I dab some superglue on the fold over just to make sure.

As for the opaque oil lines, I got ticked that the original tubing would not 'bend' in a nice curve, so I got some basket weaving vinyl tubing and stretched it to hell for the right 'scale' and it took a good curve with no 'kinking'.
But I just seem to find more things to improve each time I am at the bench.......Is that normal. ????? Hell yes LOL 🙂
I will be more than happy to show you me and my new cap mate, including the tie pin on it for good measure.

Here is the link. Cheers. 🙂

Clifford Keesler
Awesome Kerry!!!!!
22 May 2015, 20:06
Kerry COX
Thanks Clifford. 🙂 It is a great kit to build, really engrossing in it's complexity.
The sequencing (As I am learning) is vital, as it is so easy to get over confident with it as it all comes together. :-/
22 May 2015, 20:17
Kerry COX
The amount of 'handling' is taking its toll, as I will have to do some clever masking off to repair the loss of some paint on some parts. :-/
22 May 2015, 20:19
Augie
kerry.. gloves.. that helps
22 May 2015, 20:53
Kerry COX
Augie, I have used all types of gloves to protect what is done, but with the amount of handling these types of models get is more that the 'usual' amount and, even with the gloves being used, it is just where it has 'worn away' I have to repair.
22 May 2015, 21:09
Steve -
Never fear Kerry: I'm positive you will solve the "handling problem" with your usual dynamic flare and all will be spiffy keen* in the end. The P&W 'eagle' Decal will be a super classy look , to help bring the model to life 👍!

*Spiffy - An elegant appearance; Keen - Attractive or appealing

😢
'Course walking around with the Pratt & Whitney logo on your head and the pin stuck in your 😳 ????, will be a boon to the overall effect.....I'm sure 🤔 ...sorta 😄 😄
22 May 2015, 21:40

Augie, A 'fair enough' from a fair maiden is what I live for. Cheers. 🙂
No excuses on my part mate. 🙂
23 May 2015, 01:33
Kerry COX
Steve, now I know what 'spiffy' is, I shall now go and get all 'spiffed up' and go and have some lunch with a couple of friends. 🙂
Yeah, If I am going to wear the hat and logo, I had better get all clued up on the 'wasp'. :-/
23 May 2015, 01:37

Hey Kerry, the big Wasp looks amazingly authentic ! Al that wiring, the oil tubes and matal surfaces are indistinguishable from the original !
Simply masterly !
29 May 2015, 06:46
Kerry COX
Hanno, Yes mate, it certainly has all you want for realism, and when I took it to our club meeting, I had a hard time explaining it doesn't start. !!
I am just having to be patient and wait for the items for the display base to arrive from the Pratt and Whitney online store, and when that happens, I will add all the final items.
29 May 2015, 07:11

nice progress on the little brother also... wonder how you will display the large engine... When looking on youtube you can find some engine stands for testing:

Rui, the seam lines I will call 'weld' seams. LOL 🙂, but I do know what you mean mate. 🙂and thank you.🙂
Hanno, you will be pleased to know that I sent a photo to Pratt & Whitney and they have asked me to consider building one for their display room of their Merchandise Store. 🙂
Augie, One of few words, and what you have said is everything to me. 🙂

Vegard Øksenholt
Kerry! Top notch quality, as always. And I'm thrilled to hear that P&W want you to build one for them, but not surprised that you got the offer. You've moved so fast on your dio lately, how did you manage to finish this? 🙂
29 June 2015, 22:34
Kerry COX
Vegard, the "Wasp" was finished a long time back, but not "Completed" as I really needed the decals of the P&W logo for the display stands I have in mind and prepared for the model, and now I have these items, it was a matter of placing the valve covers and wiring harness on the right plugs, as now, I will decide which will be the most 'effective' way of displaying it. 🙂 👍
29 June 2015, 22:39
Vegard Øksenholt
Ahh, that's right, I remember we talked about that earlier. Damn alzheimer 😄
29 June 2015, 22:46

Yes we did 🙂.

Steve, I am grateful for you kind words mate, and I fully recommend this kit to all those who like building engines, as nothing is missing, except that the push rod covers leave the model wanting and that's why I made new ones. 🙂 👍.

It is true that a lot of what is said here is "Lost in the translation".
Your comment was so funny, I almost fell on the floor from laughing so loud and hard, and the word "Bugger" is an Australian 'slang' word for a humourous person, which you are. LOL 🙂
So, I hope that clears up any concerns you may have had..You funny bugger.
LOL 🙂
As for the "wasp" I am going to get an other one. 🙂

A bit 'chunky' on the finer detail, like the pushrod covers and the top of the cylinder heads, but that is the challenge we all face with modelling.
Getting it as close to the real deal as possible. 🙂

Album info

The "Wasp" was one the very first 'Radial' engines built, and this kit has every last nut and bolt on show.
A very well detailed kit by an American model maker that really specialises in RC kits.
There is going to be a LOT of 'clean up' to be done, as the ejector pin marks are quite prominent, along with the mould seams and 'flash'.
But with some careful attention to detail, like the tye wires between the various bolt and nut heads, it should look quite presentable.
