Joyride - M3 Grant in Pittsburgh 1941

Album image #1
Photo sourced from here: tankarchives.ca/2018..can-generals-in.html

The Pressed Steel Car Company in Pittsburgh produced the first M3 Grant tanks for the British Army, which resulted in this great image. I won't be recreating it exactly, but will be keeping the flags and workers on top.

On the Way Models has this excellent article on the M3 Grant from Hasegawa: onthewaymodels.com/a..ing_the_M3_Grant.htm
It's mostly acceptable but the turret is a complete joke as the hatch is centered and the turret itself is the wrong shape so that will require some work.

Pair of 1/76 figures from Airfix, both are German soldiers but I'm going to convert them into civilians.

I have no idea where these originate. They're a light blue so their details wash out in the photo but they are decently detailed. They both have peaked caps on and seem to be British or German from North Africa, but I can't find anything matching on Plastic Soldier Review. They're going to be the "tankers" here.

Just getting started on modifying some of the parts. Here are the Master metal barrels, went in pretty painlessly but making sure they were on totally straight was admittedly difficult.

Originally there were some pioneer tools on the chassis here but I've filed them off. You can see here in this photo ([img1]) that there were still some bits attached where pioneer tools would be fastened down, but I can't actually see any holds of any sort in my reference photo. I may add them back later with wire or PE bits.

Drilled out one roadwheel section with my pin vise, and very quickly realized that I'm going to need to use an electric drill. That'll be a project for later.

The tracks from OKB Grigorov finally showed up. Here's a quick look at them, they're pretty good quality. I plan on using the method On The Way Models recommends (onthewaymodels.com/a..ael_resin_tracks.htm) to work with them. It's a pretty old article but I couldn't find anything on youtube about resin tracks for some reason. Maybe I was searching the wrong things.

A bit of work on the bike guy, he's going to be bald and you can see I've shaved off the suspenders. I'll come back with some putty to clean up the head and his shirt. I also plan to put some spokes in the wheels with some wire.

Album image #9
The back of the tank is cleared off. It was irregular so I had to use some tamiya putty to fill in gaps, hopefully that worked well enough. I used dots of glue to add back the missing rivets.

Album image #10
Wheel progress is what slowed me down the most. This was painful to do since they're so thick. They're not even done yet, there's still a lot of irregular spots so I'll have that to look forward to.

Found this thread (britmodeller.com/for..-as-supplied-colour/) where the poster Kingsman visited the tank in the picture which is apparently at Bovington now. I was originally going to buy the Gunze olive drab since I thought I needed it but the color of the paint underneath is actually closer to the Tamiya OD.

Great project idea JC. funnily enough I just got those Master barrels too. Haven't yet plucked up the courage to invest in the OKB tracks though...

I took one look at the tracks in Hasegawa kit (here's a pic I found online for reference: flic.kr/p/2ifSgii) and knew I was going to need some aftermarket bits. Luckily I wanted to order the Canadian Dry Pin tracks for the Sherman from OKB as well so the shipping didn't hurt as badly. Haven't worked with resin tracks before but there's going to be more of that in my future so I just decided to bit the bullet here.

Will follow along for sure JC. Barrels look very good indeed. I've not used resin tracks before either so will be keen to see what you think. 🙂

Thanks to everyone who has liked and commented. I'm actually going to be away from my modelling tools for the next few months but I'll be back to modelling and posting on scalemates afterwards. 😀

Finally back to working on models again. Putting this one on hold for a bit because the front gear that comes with the kit is terribly misaligned. Going to move onto a different project I had the models for already for now. I'm planning on doing a M4 Sherman at some point in 1/72 so I'll be able to substitute the front wheels from that onto this since the Sherman and Grant share some parts. The Sherman is going to be the Canadian version so I'll have a different set of tracks and gears for that.
