Len,
Did you scratchbuild the rack for the flak curtains? If so, will you be putting the flak curtains on? That would be very authentic and VERY unique! .

Len,
That's a serious mottle coat! Is that all with airbrush? Any lessons learned you could pass on about the paining and weathering? It looks fantastic!

I did scratch build the flak curtains. I used aluminum foil folded over a brass rod and then cut to shape and painted. I think it came out ok but a little paint came off in one spot while installing it inside the glass so the shiny foil is slightly visible. I just uploaded a couple more pics that show the curtains. For the mottle coat I just used an airbrush stencil to randomly spray pattens of white/very light gray over a coat of black One-Shot Primer. I then painted the two ghost grays with AK acrylics but used the mottle stencil again with Ammo by Mig acrylics because of their slightly different hue. I also picked out a few panels and panel lines to simulate touch-ups. The nonskid walkway markings were part guesswork, part artistic license because most photos I could find had different patterns amongst different jets. I went with something appeared to be what the Silver Foxes had. I made it by masking the areas and then stippling some Mr. Surfacer on with a brush before painting for the texture. After the base coat painting I came back and airbrushed a darker gray and did some dry brushing of another gray. The paint job is far from perfect and would never win any contests but I hope it represents the tired look after time at sea. Now I just need to finish the carrier deck base I have planned.

Len,
What did you coat the windshield with? It's looking pretty legit!

I sprayed a thinned coat of clear green on the inside after masking the other panels. If I recall correctly it was about two parts Mr. Color Leveling Thinner to one part AK Real Color Clear Green. I should have done it before painting the inside framing black but didn't decide to do the green tinting until after I'd already done the framing.
