The Ugandan Army Air Force signed an agreement in 1965 and received five MiG-17Fs and 2 MiG-15UTIs in 1966. These were deployed with 25 Soviet instructors who overlapped with Israeli instructors. MiG-17F serials were U601 to U607 (the MiG-15UTIs no. U605 & U606).
Influenced by their Israeli instructors the first MiGs were camouflaged in a variant of IDF Blue and Brown on upper surfaces with Lt. Grey undersides.
In 1972, former president, Milton Obote, removed in Amin's coup in 1971 launched an ill-fated and rushed invasion from Tanzania. Uganda's counter-offensive saw the MiGs part of a bombing campaign along the border and into Tanzania, bombing depots and roads around Bukoba, and later bombing Mwanza airfield.
During 1973 and 1974, the Soviet Union started supplying MiG-21MFs and additional MiG-17s. By the late 70's and the end of the Uganda-Tanzania War, combat attrition had largely rendered the MiG-17 squadron inoperable. A number were also destroyed/disabled in the Israeli Raid on Entebbe in 1976.
U602 is well covered in modelling terms and there are decal sheets for this aircraft. Tom Cooper's excellent drawing shows the undersides and drop tanks light grey. But the accompanying picture (Alberto Grandolini) shows the fuel tanks quite reflective and so I think bare metal for those. Copying Casey Beckett's references for the IDF Ouragan Suez Ouragan | Project by Jarhead Air (1:72) I'll use Vallejo Model Air 71.113 Blue, 71.032 Gold Brown, USAF Lt. Grey 71.296.
