I had to do a bit of work to rescribe he panel trenches. Even after very careful glueing of the fuselage, they didn't even come close to matching up over the seam. Looks much better now.

Thanks Gary, there's always plenty of room, so feel free to stretch out and make yourself comfortable. I'm getting close to done on the F-20, but his is a dual build with a F-18 Hornet. That one's been side-lined due to a missing canopy, but a kind soul on another forum sent me a replacement, so hopefully the whole thing will get back on track soon enough.

Thanks Jeramy. I just really like trying to capture the essence of the scene off the comicbook pages. That's sort of why I include the artwork on the wooden bases... it makes me feel like it's jumping off the page and into my hands. 🙂

There are several 1/24 scale Area 88 figures that came boxed with the old Takara 1/100 boxes - strobez.ca/wp/index...-100-scale-projects/ - I started working on one of the Shin ones "off the side of the workbench".

So, this half of the project is basically done. I still have to struggle a bit with Shin's "flaming unicorn" crest on the tail. Getting homemade decals on anything other than a white background is always tricky. Let's see if I can outfox it this time...

Thanks Tim, Villiers, and Thomas. I did put a led for the trolled sonar bay back at the stern. It is apparently not bright enough to be really visible. Probably not noticeable after finished.
I prefer to use Led tape light as it has build in resistors so I don't need do calculation to figure out the resistor value. Once that is sorted, what left is just connect the led unit with a battery and a switch. I think it is better to ask a trained electrician as the circiut I built don't last long and I don't really know why.

Hm, how long did it take to make the nice looking ocean surface? It certainly looks like a fun project.
I wish I knew how to make such ocean surfaces, as it really seem to complete a model with such a diorama.
I am no expert on led's but my impression is that one has to be careful that the voltage to the led's is controlled to specs, so they don't burn out shortly after and end up being un-repairable inside the model. Also, something about connecting led's in parallel, pattern iirc, to avoid one dead led blacking out all the rest of the leds in a serial connection, iirc.

Thanks Treehugger, THomas and Tim.
As for the sea base, you can check a YouTube channel called ''studio blue ocean'', I basically followed his videos. And treehugger did a pretty good summary for LEDs. The voltages is very important and it is always needed to put some resistors in series to potect the LEDs. The size of the resistors can be calculated with ohms' law. There are small circuit boards for LEDs which can be used to make everything easier.

Thanks, Rui and Villiers. I just masked the hangar as I am going to paint the outside. I will get better hangar photos once finish. The trumpster kit comes with the hangar and the ceiling is in good detail (I only add LEDs to the ceiling). Only the walls need additional work to add details, like handrails, supports etc.

@Hang Li: For the 'oil canning' effect. Did you have accurate plans for the frame spacing or how did you come up with the pattern you used? I have to say that is look really convincing after some more weathering effects are applied on top.

thanks Ingmar, Gary and Villiers. As for the 'oil canning' effect, I found some photos which are somewhat visible for this effect as reference for the pattern and I have to simplifie the pattern to make it practical. So it is not quite accurate. I got some pre-cutted masking paper in 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm and I just picked one that I believe is most suitable.

Thanks, everyone. As for the material used for the sea base, I normally use high-density insulation foam (blue sheet from my early photos) and clay. I think many people build diorama this way. I believe there are more sophisticated methods nowadays. I saw someone using CFD modeling to simulate the wave pattern and 3D printing the entiry sea base in Chinese formus.

I tried the 3D printing method once, but only for something like 10x10cm, as that is the maximum for my printer and I did not see how I could glue several pieces together without visible seam. The seascape was generated in Blender and I have to say it looked stunning! BUT I feel a lot of the final effect and realism comes from painting and here you are doing a superb job! I will definitely take your work as my inspiration for my next take on displaying water!

I started on this, and funny thing, the instructions have you carve out the rear fuselage and replace it with some other parts, but after I do that, I look at my reference picture above and realize that the rear fuselage on this plane more closely resembles the original fuselage without the other part. So now I'm gluing back in and puttying the parts that were originally there... that'll teach me to look at reference pictures more closely! I've done a bunch of minor assembly and painting, especially of the interior.

From Wiki: "From 1941 onwards all military and many civil Tiger Moths were outfitted with anti-spin strakes positioned on the junction between the fuselage and the leading edge of the tailplane, known as Mod 112". I think the (new) Airfix tooling gives this option (unlike the old-tool kit I built a few months ago), but, no, your Batavia examples didn't seem to have the said anti-spin strakes.

The Kora models decals aren't really worth it. They are missing the wing markings entirely. All I ended up using was the markings on the prop and the tiny lettering under the "v.v.c." On the cowling. Also included are some resin wheels which don't seem different or better than the ones in the kit. The Dutch decals sheet is nice. I have often had problems with their decals shattering but these seem strong.

First pictures of the first steps in the construction of a B-17G, whose mission role particularly appealed to me: I had long been fascinated by the sea rescue missions of this B-17 equipped with a droppable lifeboat! So I was delighted when I found one of the rare kits on the subject here on scalemates.
A few months ago I had already built an Academy 'Flying Fortress' in an early B version, the kit qualities of which I thoroughly enjoyed. The accuracy of fit is not far from 'perfect' and the details that are often missing in these Academy kits have to be added wherever it is important. In this case that means A set of etched parts for the cockpit and nose area, as well as an exterior set, especially for the engines and undercarriage, and resin tyres, also from Eduard. Not to forget: the seat cushions from Kits World were used in the cockpit

That makes me happy, Łukasz and Finn!
The SB-17G is slowly taking shape. The V-position of the wings needs to be changed: in my opinion, Academy has set a much too steep angle here! The corrected position of the wings also results in the distances at the wing-fuselage bonding points.... the fit here would be excellent!

In preparation for the surface colours, I have now done the following: I have masked those stripes over the black primer that are to remain visible as black lines separating the NMF surfaces from the large yellow zones using suitably wide Tamiya masking tape. I also masked the areas on the leading edges that carry the rubber 'de-icers'.
Next, the anti-glare areas in front of the cockpit and on the inside of the engine nacelles are sprayed, then.... then come the Alclad metal colours!

The new pictures are already close: the high gloss level comes from the sealing of the decals.... now it will be adjusted with different clear coats.

Now the sea rescue SB-17 has been completed!
A final challenge was the attachment of the lifeboat: as the original photos show, the gunwale should be more or less flush with the underside of the B-17, but this was impossible to achieve with the moulds of the kit boat! I have now created a new gunwale with Tamiya masking tape and painted it yellow after cutting it to size. After that, and with careful adjustments, I was able to fit the boat correctly.
I am very pleased to have found this kit here on scalemates from a colleague, so that I have been able to realise an old dream: I have always been very enthusiastic about this version! Thank you for your input and your motivating comments!

Great build with perfect masking and painting!
Crazy! The sailors might first lose their ship and then be bombarded with a boat!
Seriously, how did they drop the boat exactly where it was needed? Flying low? With a parachute?

Another masterpiece.
There is an A7V in Australia.

Thanks mates. 🙂
Wim: I wasn't impressed with the Gasoline range either and certainly not impressed with the prices. Mine cost probably 1/3 of what that kit cost and I enormously enjoyed the built – probably more so than any kit I've ever done.
Wilky: At least the Aussies had the sense to save one – I'm glad they did.

Thanks Rui. Coming from one of the best armour modellers on here, that means a lot. 🙂

Holy s#*t Gorby. This is AmazIng! I am about halfway done reading the brexit thread and... the rivets, THE RIVETS!!! Very educational, and definitely very entertaining. Not surprised you left this boring lot for the "others"😉 😄. I am starting a scratchbuilding project myself, but it will be of kinder garden variety compared to your undertaking. Cheers 👍

Wow, impressive work Gorby. The build log on Brexit is awesome. I'm going to use that rivet idea for sure! Oh and I did get the Kryten reference. I saw an episode filmed!

Thanks very much mates!😉
The rivets were far from the most enjoyable part of the build but these early tanks would look naked without them. I'll look forward to your scratch-build Alec, no doubt it will be astounding.

Thank you for your nice words gorbygould, but I think they're a bit exaggerated. I've still a lot to learn with Mates here, including with you 🙂

Scott: I was well impressed with your build and I referred to your photos to help with mine, so thanks.
Bart: Yes that bugs me as well. I did put a load of lead inside the tank, but it isn't heavy enough to weigh it down sufficiently. I'm going with the experimental super extra heavy-duty barbed wire excuse.😉

Thanks for the offer Scott but I've mentally moved on to my new project. 🙂
My workroom needs to be stripped and rebuild before that can start though. 🙁

Tanks are not my metier, but this 100% scratched model is really impressive 😳 Very nice ideas in build report, and even the tracks are scratched 👍

Thanks very much Frank, your praise has made my day! 🙂
Up until this, tanks were of little interest to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed this build, probably more than any model I've ever done. It kept my brain working right to the end. I'm not saying that there will be no more aircraft from me, but there will certainly be more AFV in my near future. 👍

Thanks Capt & Pietro.
I would have loved to add some figures Capt, but certainly at the time this was built there were no WWI British troops available in 1/48.

I did do a full build report...on another site, a site which has now unfortunately died. It was only yesterday I removed the dead link to the report - I don't know if that pushed this post to the top of the feed, I though that just happened when you added more photos.
Thanks all for your comments and likes. 🙂

Thanks Kesa. This was my first full scratch build - I only built it because there wasn't many WWI vehicles or tanks in 1/48 at the time. It sort of got me hooked on scratch building. 🙂

Well man good for you. I assume scrach building is pretty hard so you've definitely outdone yourself. And with all the small details i assume you've got a pretty steady hand for a man your age (no offence ofcourse)

It's easier that you think Kesa, although it probably best if you start with adding small bits on kits.

There used to be a WiP on another site but that no longer exists. I've been asked a few times for some photos of the build so I if get a chance I'll post some - no promises though.

I've been asked on a few occasions to show some work in progress photos so as I've finally managed to get some I've added a few.
You should feel relieved I haven't posted every photo of the build and I've whittled the original, many thousand word essay into significantly shorter, easily forgettable segments. 🙂

It was very daunting when I started as it was my first full scratch-build, but I ended up really enjoying it. 🙂

Thanks very much Djordje. 1/48th was my favourite scale as well, which was the main reason I built it....now my favourite scale is 1/72 and there is one in 1/72. That would have saved soooo much work. 😄 😄

Yes, but I haven't seen this in 1/48 before and you did it so well! And scratch built means it's that much special. I don't check scalemates too often and I could have missed this gem.

This was my first full scratch-build which I learned a hell of a lot from, so I am glad I went though with it. 🙂

Not sure what this release is all about? This is a just a rebox of the ‘unlimited’ edition Kurfürst that is still completely ‘sold in’
I say it how it is. I have paid into this company so that is my prerogative. I got your backs guys! No one rips off our community on my watch! Huuhhh!
