Martin is right. The best thing to do is learn by jumping in and building a kit. Don't expect your early efforts to be brilliant. But, every time you finish one, take a good look at what you could do better on the next one. (I wouldn't worry too much about things like weathering on early builds. You can always add that later on).

a model can certainly be painted with a simple brush, with no airbrush. but doing it correctly needs some skills. there are pleople that can paint a model with the brush and you will not see a difference with one painted with airbrush. i am certainly not one of them 😄 😄 in any case, the trick is to use very thin layers of diluted paint (same as if you use an airbrush)

As I said it's sometimes possible to brush it. Once I brush-painted an entire 1/72 PBY Catalina with a Tamiya aluminum pot. But if I would use that on my current model, it has details that would completely vanish because of the thickness of the paint. I would have to thin it almost as water not to clog up my perforated photo etch, it has holes of almost a hair thick. To get the paint to cover the shiny metal I would need multiple layers of it. But using it in my airbrush with an 1/2 part of thinner that can be done in a few stages with no risk of clogging. Here you see a primer of grey Tamiya XF IJN Gray and a finish of Lifecolor acrylic over that, and I can still add a matt varnish and not clog the holes. The models you chose should not have such problematic parts, but when you get experience you will notice if the paint on a model was as thin as it could be made. [img1]

another option to "make decals" is actually not use decals, but mask and paint whatever you want. you can use mask to paint many things, and then get the ones you can not make, from other kits. a national insignia of two planes of similar size and scale would be just perfect to be used for example. and of course, there are aftermarket decals set that can be used any way you want.

Dont worry mate, we all startet. My first model i build was a revell 1/72 corsair and i didnt even had paint for it. 😬

I can really recomment the tamiya thin glue and airbrush.

This F-18 was my first try using a crappy revell airbrush but damn i loved the result. I didnt had clearcoat or weathering stuff.

With the time and every model you learn something new and improve. I still try new things on every model and still mess them up.

I know it's a very old kit but 12 Euro sounds a reasonable price for a 1/35 kit.

I thought like 20 or 25 ish euro was the standard for models like this. Especially since it was made by tamiya who isnt exactly known for being cheap

It is a very old kit, sold for these prices Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf. F/G (Tamiya 35009, 1:35)

And it is a small model, so little plastic is used.

Concerning the nipper be aware that the ones for modelling have a special mode of cutting different from regular side cutters for cables i.e. With their mode of cutting almost no nub remains.

I'm not the best person to advise on weathering as I don't really know what I'm doing and don't really enjoy that stage - if I ever achieve a decent result it's always by accident. 😄

Having said that, don't feel you have to produce award winning models. As long as you are enjoying yourself and you are happy with your finished model, that's all that matters.

I wish you good luck. It's better to seal the decals and not have them peeling off like the one on my dozer blade when you start weathering.

The trouble is that many of the weathering tutorials will assume you have an aribrush. It is possible to weather well without and airbrush, maybe look on Youtube to see if there are any suitable videos which may help.

I am not a great modeler and I am not productive at all. Turns out, I like scale modeling very much, but mostly when I am bored.
Turns out, even though I do like fixing kits and making improvements, I would rather have scale model kits requiring little to no fixing.
Slowly but surely, still I get more and more practice. A recent "halleluja" moment was when I learned about this thinner mix for my Vallejo paints, using an airbrush, no more tip dry, also learned to use both my 0.35 (better for putting paint onto intricate details) and my 0.5 airbrush guns (so much more paint flow).

My kit stash size is starting to get rediculous. I also like investing into new tools, something I couldn't do before, couldn't afford it.

There seems to be some people, other than me, putting together and seemingly frequently completing very nice ship models, even including some ocean diorama, most impressive. 🙂

Some people seem willing to spend a lot of money on aftermarket parts, I can't justify doing that beyond some limit. I can't buy a large amount of 3d crew figures for a 1:350 ship, beyond some amount, it just seems way too expensive.

Looks like it's been well played with like I did with my models when I was a kid. That's good for a six year old. No photos were ever taken of my childhood builds (I didn't have a camera) but I suspect they were a similar standard - and I was a teenager, not six.

It won't break unless the decal is too old and brittle before immersion. However the decal glue is gone and you need to apply Microset or equivalent before placing the decal.
