Album info

Hawker Typhoon Mk. Ib, MN529, pilot F/O Ian Handyside, 184 Squadron, 129 Wing, RAF Westhampnett, UK, June 1944,

MN529 was assigned to 184 Squadron on 1 June 1944, it was one of the first Typhoons with a four-bladed propeller in service. It was flown by F/0 Ian G. Handyside and in short order received invasion stripes which covered the letter N on the fuselage from the machine's individual markings. Therefore, this letter was written on the vertical tailplane. After several operational flights without a dust filter from the dusty R&R (refuel & rearm) type airfields in Normandy, it was sent for repair. After it was carried out, it was sent to 193 Squadron, but was shot down during an operational flight on 12 October 1944. Ian Handyside was promoted to Fl/Lt and continued operational flying until 14 January 1945 when his Typhoon was hit by anti-aircraft artillery, Handyside had to land in enemy-held territory and spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp.
