Yes, s correct. The blade tips go supersonic and the popping is actually mini sonic booms.

Donald, The main rotor blade tips don't reach the speed of sound but the tail rotor blades do. What you are describing is called blade slap. The primary cause of that 'popping' noise is a rotor blade flying through the vortex of the blade before it. It's usually most prominent when the pilot is pulling a lot of power and descending. Basically, the rotor disk is flying in it's own dirty air. 🙂

Thank you all. Kerry you are correct, I had a senior moment. I should be able to remember that stuff since I flew the Damn things.LOL. I remember we used to put our Huey's in a decent and pull power and make the blades pop at night when shooting practice approaches. Let the civillians know we were out there protecting them.

Clifford, I am guilty of copying some information I found on Wikkipedia mate, but I also remember seeing something of the subject on a documentary about how the rotor blades are constructed, so if I sound like a know it all, I apologise mate. :-/
