Hi Stefan and others thanks for the kind comments.
Making the rock I used a high density foam from 'Bunnings' (big hardware store in Australia). It cost about $12 (aud) for Knauf Insulation 1200 x 600 x mm XPS Multi-Use Foam Board.
Gluing the foam board together I roughed the surfaces before gluing i also used tooth picks to add strength. Once dry, i cut the board using hobby knife then used real rocks from the garden to make the impressions. The foam board is great to cut and very easy to make impressions with anything you decide to use. o paint the rock I sprayed grey under coat (vallejo) then used four washes dark grey first, black, dark brown finished with light brown.
Dry brushed with a base grey from vallejo. I,ve learned all of this from others a great site is Youtube Video. This site goes though a lot of diorama building ideas and techniques. Hope this helps.
