My Honda bike is giving me Post Traumatic Sanding Syndrome and is a major mojo killer. This is a build to get the juices going again.
Simple cockpit - a seat and some black paint - "nothing to see here" equals a speedy build. Glad I didn't buy the Aires cockpit 😉
I did buy the exhaust, so some work there was needed. Best result was to thin the cowling. As it is an older kit, the parts are a bit crude, but fit is okay. Almos build her in an afternoon, only her legs remain and then some painting.

Oh cool. I like the Draken. I've got the Hasegawa kit (and the Revell boxing too), so I'm interested to see how different the AIrfix one is.

Peter and Spanjaard, is there room left to park a 90% finished Vigilante, a just started Fouga Magister, a halfway Graf Spee and some scratchbuild junk???
Greg, I wanted a 1/72 Draken. The Hasegawa's are a) very expensive b) hard to find c)ace combat or area 88 versions mostly. The Revell boxings are almost impossible to find. Which left this ancient Airfix kit, picked up at last years European Scale Modelling event. Cost me a whole €30 for 5 kits, this one, Airfix's SH3 Seaking, TBD1 Devastator, P38 Lightning and a Hasegawa Phantom. All older second hand kits, all unbuilt and decentish. In now way comparable to a new kit. This Draken is based on a mold from 1971.....
For the green I'll use some olive drab, for the blueish colour I could use some tips. Grey and silver underside are covered. Then this Klassieker (in Dutch) will be done!

I love old kits, so no worries on that front. I wanted a Draken for my Area 88 project but got the Revell boxing too soon, because I ended up with the Hasegawa one as well. If you're still interested I'd be willing to let the Revell one go for a reasonable price,
However, maybe you're not because you're off to a great start already.

I used RLM 75 on my Dutch F-84F and F-104G, very close to exact color match.

Thanks for the offer Greg, but unlike Kerry I only build one of each subject 😉
Thanks for the colour Clifford. Keeping my stash up to date sure helps. Of the 203 bottles of paint, I have exactly 0 RLM75.... I do have a Vallejo RLM74. I might use that instead. If you won't tell, I won't 😉

Start mixing Martin, it's really not that hard (said the man with 150+ paints in the stash 😄 )

No worries Marty, plenty of room between the Starship Enterprise and the Type 7 or the Cylon Raider and the V1.

Preshaded the top. Classic black annoyances. Too thick and grainy, too thin and spidery. I need more practice.

After the thinning it was. I KNOW these things, somehow I FORGOT to apply them properly. Luckily it is preshading, an extra coat of thin colour should save the day (I hope).
Just painted the underside with Vallejo RAL7046. Again not the exact colour, but close enough.
I'm so happy I don't do shows where realism is demanded 🙂

It's a magical creature Peter. It starts out as a regular plastic toy, but once glued to a jar lid and painted gold, it brings smiles to young girls faces for days!!!

😄 way to go Greg 👍
Painted the leading edges and lower fuselage. Intakes and legs are to be painted next. Then Decals, a matt varnish and some nav lights.

I am a late arrival at this build and I do apologize Martin. 👍
As for the show pony, I never liked the ones with the tatoo's on their thigh's. It made them look cheap. ! hehehehe
But the Draken, I am really impressed with.
The whole process with the pre shading and pencil squiggle marks looks confusing at first 😉
But I do love the work bench collection of all the bits and end's, as it's just like mine, with all the vital bits in amongst it all .....................some where. !
👍 🙂

No need to apologize Kerry, I'm glad to have you here. My preshading doesn't always (NEVER) works, as I tend to use too much colour afterwards…. I might luck into the right amount someday, perhaps, hopefully. I need the pencil lines as I airbrushed the camo freehand, otherwise my camo isn't historically correct 😉 I only masked the underside and the demarcation between grey and camo.
I know the bench is a mess guys. Funny thing is, somehow I remember where everything is. It's rare for me to have to search for stuff on the bench.
"Already knew about me" How long did it take to learn that, big fella?
One's got to love himself before he can love someone else properly!

It's strange how we can have a God almighty mess on or near our cutting mats, but can locate exactly what we need without looking. Uncanny that. ! 🙂
As for the 'pre shading'. That is something I am yet to attempt, as I guess that when I do I will then understand what the fuss is all about. hehehehe 🙂
One thing I do know about Peter is............................he is DEEP. Something I like. 👍 😉

I think "philosophical" is the word you seek young Cox. Be careful Yoda, I am not above having your bed short sheeted you know!
I can never find anything on my bench. Even the pot of glue sitting right in front of me.

If preshading is done properly, you get a subtle shade around panel lines, recesses etc. If I don't try, it will never work 😉
I'll settle For progress Spanjaard

The 37year old decals weren't as good as new. Some silvered, some crumbled along the edges. Result is somewhat acceptable.
I also glued her pointy nose before painting a matt varnish.

I'm with you Martin. I keep trying to get the persuading done properly. I think it worked pretty well on my recent B-1 build, but far from perfect. It's easy to both over and under do it. This Draken really came together quickly. Even with the Pny interlude, you got it done in record time.

Greg, this was meant as a mojo restorer. And it obviously worked. I don't think I've finished a kit this fast as a reborn modeller. Using only 31 parts surely helps 😄
Now it's on to new (or resuscitated) adventures!

glad to see it finished. very nice
about the decals, it looks like you did you place them over matt pain. A thin layer of bright varnish may have make those old decals stick a lot better and avoid the silvering.... and then you can cover everything with whatever you prefer, matt, bright, satin.... to also protect the decals.

Ammo paints are satin, that shouldn't be the problem. Will give an in between gloss layer a go next time. See what happens. I've got a SH-3 kit from the same vintage, remember that one? 😉

Well done MArtin! I guess one will not see this old Dog built in such a very good way....
The silvering Decals disurbs a little bit the overall Impression, but when one knows that they are 40+ it is ok.
Congrats.. Superb Job on this
