David SmithThanks everyone for your generous comments. The kit is a bit fiddly in places - lots of thin struts and no location points - so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. However, I must say that the finished result is all I could have hoped for. The 'look' of the finished article is just what I wanted and I thoroughly enjoyed building it. The canopy masking set and resin missile system were superb. The decals too, although I only needed a tiny proportion of what was on the sheet.

nikfrostThe cast texture is Tamiya flat aluminium XF-16 very poorly sprayed by me haha, I think it was drying on its way from the airbrush to the surface and kind of built up.

Mr DWorked well to the effect 👍 Tamiya dries really fast , l use Velejo mostly, l found Tamiya to fast n thickens up in the pot, Velejo doesn't harden like Tamiya n definitely needs good clear coat.

nikfrostI always put a dollop of tamiya lacquer thinner in and two mixing balls, seems to keep it moving quite well.

Dave NormanPhotos of the completed model before I start work on the base. Eduard's 1/48th "Desert babe" plus additional accesories from Eduard including, AIM-7s, Boz pod, Skyshadow pod, paveways. Also added Master's pitot probe and some 3d printed intake and exhaust blanks purchased from a nice chap on Ebay. Paints used were mostly MRP-243 US Desert Sand (FS30279) with some MRP-185 Desert Pink RAF used to post shade and add some variation.

Roland SachsenhoferI think it's a really wonderful idea.... A few Star Wars themes are in the making, possibly here: I would also like to see a Tie-Fighter hovering over this base.
A nice encounter - magnets are actually being used in this project! Since I want to show the "Orlyonok" gliding over a water surface as well as standing still, I have prepared two versions of the props. In order to be able to change them stably, I attached magnets to the axis of rotation. The one on the engine was inserted through a hole from the outside. It sits on the tip of a toothpick, which has been inserted through the hole in the inside of the engine. The magnet now sits exactly in the centre of the engine diameter. The second magnet only had to be glued to the two ends of the propeller axles. Now, it works perfectly with a soft "click"! 🙂

Roland SachsenhoferThe Oryonok still looks a bit 'artificial', but in principle shows its surface colours, which will hopefully breathe a little life into it, are the traces of use and wear that I will still apply. The windows on the fuselage will of course also be drilled out and filled with clear white glue.
At the same time, the water base is now being worked on. This time I'm using a light filler on a polystyrene base as a base for this, with Vallejo water gel on top.
The magnetically interchangeable ahrwerk and propeller have worked - which is great news of course!

Roland SachsenhoferRobert, your hint made me to rethink and rebuild the whole thing a bit: the strip of water flown over is no longer deeply furrowed, but has been flattened - the picture material helped a lot.
You can see the whole thing now primed with Tamiya acrylic paint and coloured once, tomorrow transparent water gel from AK will be applied...

Roland SachsenhoferBefore I continue with pictures of the water base that was completed today, I'll show you a few snapshots of the completed 'Orlyonok'. As you know, I made it with interchangeable modules for both a land and a flying display; here you can see the 'land version'.
Tomorrow there will certainly be an opportunity to catch the aircraft flying by and photograph it in flight. 🙂

Desert MarlinThis project will have both pilots on the intercom and watching the engine startup process. That is why the same type figure is used in both cockpits. They both monitor the engine to ensure that the EGT and RPM is increasing appropriately. Each has their hand on the control stick to be able to open their MIC as they confirm everything is normal at start. The plan is to have the aircraft loaded with a Nuke (Apache Cruise Missile?). Seems appropriate to me for the days we live in now...

Seems like kit plastic never can compete with resin seats. 🙂
Though, I no longer crave for resin interior for the cockpit because of the work, but seats are ok.

Desert MarlinAs I have begun work on this kit, I am yet again struck by the lack of information in the variations and options provided in the kit. For example, the tail tip is not called out that applies to the 2000N version. While the nose of the 2000D is provided in the kit, it has to be modified to make it correct for the 2000N. Oh bother…
