I'm not worthy (plainly a load of tosh, but I need to keep up the pretence of looking humble). 😄

26 October 2020, 16:30

Yes frank, this thing only existed as a very poorly thought out patent. I've been looking through Google patents and it's amazing how many other misguided monstrosities are buried in there.

Daniel: 😄 😄 😄 What a fabulous contraption - I'm half tempted to build it.

You're too kind Rui, but I know that I'm not good at painting because I don't enjoy it, so I usually rush it to get it over with. I just enjoy putting the bits together – perhaps I'm channelling my inner toddler with the Lego I used to love playing with.😉
17 November 2020, 16:34
David Taylor
Im the same Gorby, prefer the modelling aspect rather than the painting.
17 November 2020, 17:12
Rui S
Well, i've to say that I also, prefer the construction part, even if it's a dio, but without paint it dosen't work. I even avoid painting subassemblies 🤔 but because I like dios, I've to handle figure painting. They are too difficult and take a lot of time, AHRRR 🙁
17 November 2020, 20:08
gorby
Tell me about it – I've just painted 51 1/72 figures for the dio for this monstrosity, although admittedly I stop short of following your lead and didn't paint their nails.😉

And again a real cool project...just getting in now, but what i see is fantastic...i really love your Scratchwork! Which Side is front?? The big roller i think, that would mean the cannons look backwards...absolute crazy!

Thanks very much mates. You will be seeing this monstrosity again when the diorama is complete. 👍
I'm sorry to disappoint you – my next project is to reduce my ludicrously excessive stash of ELEVEN kits! What on earth possessed me to buy so many?😉
Scratching the ridiculously is very addictive, so I'm sure I won't be able to stay away for long.

Michael: Yes the giant roller is at the front. It does take some brain readjustment to understand why ALL the main guns are pointing towards their own troops. What was Jehlik thinking! 😄

Absolutely😎, awesome build
22 November 2020, 08:03
Michael Valentan
Only 11 kits in stock?? Oh my god, that explains why you do that much scratching...i have 10 times of you in stock and always find something to build...from scratch...and every time i made a scratchmodel it comes out as a plastic-kit from a large manufacturer in the next year...last thing to build was a "Boarhound"...should be on display in Vienna in last June (GO Modelling)....will sadly never happen again due to Corona and austrian officials....

And i still wonder if the tank of jehlik was for America in the first line or for export to some "not so heroic" country...to shoot at fleeing soldiers was very popular in former times...
22 November 2020, 12:14
Daniel Klink

22 November 2020, 13:59
gorby
😄 😄 😄 – Oh yeh! Robo vac with attitude. 😄

Thanks very much matiepoos I'm pleased it meets with your approval. Not sure about the weathering myself, I sort of closed my eyes and threw mud at it.

Yes 11 kits Michael – but they seem to be 11 eternal kits. It seems that even if I build a kit, I count the stash afterwards and it's STILL 11 bloody kits – how does that happen? I even took one shoe and sock off last time I counted them.😉

Annnyyyway – more bloody sandbags to make. 🙁

Hahaha ok. I do not ignore you, and surely don't mind look at your work 👍. Don't quite understand, why you didn't paint their nails, hehehe.😄 Looking forward to see the dio here😎
28 November 2020, 13:29
gorby
Of course I painted the fingernails Rui, you're just not looking closely enough.😉
I stopped short of painting the whites of their eyes because people start shooting when they see the whites of their eyes and that seems downright antisocial to me.

Q: I posted a question some time ago, and then someone replied, and then I posted another comment as an update, but the last comment doesn't show in the newsfeed, is this intensional? The original post, did show up in the popular newsfeel.

I worry nobody can see my updated comment in the newsfeed, on this older post of time.
I suppose there might be a delay in the system/database, but then I wonder what this delay time might be.

Q: Is there any convenient way of scratchbuilding railings along the side of the ship, for 1:350 ships?

I had this idea, but don't have the tools for it. Basically using metal rods, then clamping hard on 3-4 places to flatten spots on the rod, then drill holes in those flat spots, then pull a wire through the holes later. But chances are I think the whole rod will bend every which way when clamping hard on some spots to flatten the rod in places. I suppose working with styrene rods might be simpler, but then, when drilling holes in the flat parts, the styrene will likely snap or melt if ever coming in contact with liquid glue.

One other idea I had, was to maybe try scrape the photo etch railings, to try round the otherwise "square looking" horizontal parts, making them look thinner than the "rods" standing upright, making them look more like maybe some wire than welded metal pieces.

I have seen Tamiya having some aftermarket product for the rods, with metal wire, but only for the Japanese Yamato ship, which doesn't look like most other ships I would think.
24 August, 09:09
Martin Oostrom
Wow. The vertical rods are about 3-5cm diameter in real life. That equates to 1-1,5mm in scale. The ropes are 1cm in real life? So you'd need 0.03 wire? The maths is from the top of my head, so I could be wrong of course.
I wish you the best of luck in pulling that off. And I call shotgun on the build!
24 August, 09:19
Treehugger
I have some 0.1 mm metal wire. 🙂
Hmmm, maybe I could try combine that with some styrene rods, but square ones.
Hmm, 0,2 mm styrene rod might work.
Not having a precision drill mounted vertically with a wheel/lever will not be fun though.
Admittedly trying to straighten out a metal wire that's been on a roll, will be a pain, or at least have to be pulled out tight adding press/tension in the parts.
24 August, 13:49
Treehugger
Oh, this was easy. Though, styrene rods are flimsy if accidentally knocking your hand into them, if finishing a model with styrene rods as railings.
The 0.2 mm drill bit is VERY weak, the 0.3 mm drill bit is much sturdier(!) There are no 0.1 mm drill bit in this UStar (UA-260 drill bit set 0.2 to 1.5 mm).
Hm.. I think a better idea, is to just use thin thread, maybe easier to handle and it will relax more nicely instead of potentially causing a stiff bend along the side of the ship if the vertical rods are a little unsymmetrical along the hull, if using the stiff brass wire even if just 0.1 mm thick.

The wonky brass wire is the very start of the brass wire on the roller, presumably the rest of the wire is all smooth.

OK, so I am doing another Phantom. Almost as surprising as me doing an Eagle. 😄 LOL

So, I was asked to do one to use the landing gear and exhaust set by 3D Chute Expert out of Taiwan. My club Pres has a page that he highlights builds and products, and 3D is one of the companies he showcases. So he sent me this set, which is not in the database here yet. But to the build.

This is the Academy kit. I LOVELOVELOVE this kit. This is my 3rd one. The only drawback to the kit is the gear wells, but I think I have the best way to do them figured out now. Still the only part of the kit I detest. So, as I wait for the Eduard PE for the cockpit to get here, I moved right on to the landing gears. As I said, I was given this set to try out, and I will give my honest opinion. You all know I dont mince words. LOL That being said, these things are great! The detail is superb. They fit right into the wheel well with no hassles. I simply hit them with some gloss white, a dirt wash as this is going to be Col Olds's plane as it flew, not as the museum piece. Did a couple of the lines black and poof, thats it. No need to add any parts from the kit (aside from maybe landing lights) as they have every detail already on them. A total winner in my book.

And as to the subject matter. If you dont already know, Col Robin Olds (he eventually made Brigadier General) was one of the best pilots to grace the cockpit of an aircraft. Triple ace between WWII and Nam. Definitely should read up on him. There arent many, if any, left like him. If youre a Phantom phan and a USAF guy, this plane is a must do. 🙂

Landing gear installed and wings together. Intakes together and done with the latex paint method. Got the PE for the pit finally, so that has commenced as well.
18 May, 20:17
Donald Dickson II
OK, PE installed for the pit. The lading gears came with wheels as well. And they are just as nice as the gears. Just gotta add a little dirt to em. And the seats from the kit. I could have sworn I had some resin seats in my parts box, but alas, no. I ordered the PE belts to dress up these. They are pretty good aside from no belts. I need to redo the oh shit handles.

Cheers Don, I'm definitely giving that a try. Just got to find some paint 😁👍🏻 which I've just learned from a quick google search is known as "emulsion" here in the UK ! 😁

Its a mess, but it works pretty well. 🙂

Got the tires on, front landing gear on. These things look fantastic in place. Again, cant recommend them enough. Ill be using his products more often I think. Also, I got one seat done with the PE belts. Man its tedious. Doing just this convinces me I will NEVER do a freaking ship. LOL
29 May, 02:17
Donald Dickson II
OK, back to this one. Primed and silver sprayed a bit. You can see the blue spots. Thats masking fuid. Once I paint the camo over it, I will scrub the paint and get the chipping effect his plane has in the pic.

Thats the plan anyway. LOL

2/3 of the initial camo on.

Dog sitting at a friend's house for a couple weeks so had to bring half my bench with me. Getting a bit of work in.

Working on the decals. Not going to do much by way of stencils. But the couple I did do by the cockpit are driving me nuts. They arent silvered, but I can dull them down. Grrrrrrrr.
19 August, 02:38
Donald Dickson II
Thank you Augie. 🙂

Welcome Capt. 🙂

So, as discussed, no way am I doing all those stencils. I did the few for emergency egress and a couple warnings, and thats sufficient. I once spoke with an HH-43 pilot who told me half the birds he flew didnt even have the US Air Force on the tail. I am pretty sure the planes being pretty was the last thing on their minds during that war.

Anyway, this is her. Just have to do the little things like bay doors. Then the part I hate the most. Weapons. Blargh. So next trip to the bench will be that. Last update until I finish. 🙂

🤣 someone else who hates doing the weaps!! I do mine first now, and I mean ALL of the supplied weapons , even if I don't need them, cos I know I will on another build, might as well go through the pain as few times as possible 😆. Looking very sweet btw.

How good and detailed do you think the kit is?
16 August, 19:38
Cristian A
Hi Shar, the details are good enough for a 16 EUR kit but the build is not easy, struggled a lot with the canopy and cockpit. It's not a perfect representation of the real Alligator as it is built after the initial variant / prototype (EOP above, no camouflage scheme and paint references for it, no countermeasure system under the back landing gear and the nose is a bit different as well). The panel lines are recessed, so hopefully weathering will go smooth.

The entire interior is lined with upholstery, which is primarily used for noise-insulation. Until yesterday, I broke my head because I didn't know how to repicate it… After a conversation with a mate (thx Hanno), the brilliant idea came to me: Fimo clay.
The material can be processed excellently and is solid in the oven after 30 minutes at 130°. The most important thing is that it does not become bone-hard but left elastic and can even be sanded.

This morning I was curious and unpacked the chassis of Jam-Screw. As already written, the quality is outstanding. But everything is so filigree that you have to be very careful and not to break anything when handling. I had to improvise a bit here and there. In the end, I was finished after 2 hours. Including preparation for laying the cables.

A waterproof green rubber mat is laid on the cabin floor of the SeaKings of the German Navy. However, not under the equipment rack and not in the area of the „shower cabin" (radaroperator workstation). There, the rubber mat was left out, shortened and folded upwards.

At the points of the mountingpoints and other hatches, access covers (probably also made of rubber) are incorporated into the rubber mat.

I have hardly any experience with 3D printed parts, especially concerning the flexibility. The material used by Jam-Screw is quite brittle. Therefore, I decided to disconnect the axles and insert a wire. This also has the advantage that you can align the wheels precisely afterwards, especially because they are flattened.

Result of a modeling mini task: DIY FOD covers.
I wanted to be very „smart" and install the exhaust pipes from the outside after painting. I overlooked that the opening in the fuselage is much smaller than the „hidden" end. Therefore, I had to improvise: I sawed off the outer end and inserted them obliquely from the outside.

🙂 🙂
As usual I installed the door without glueing via 2 x piece of 0,26 mm wire. I drilled 2 holes (0,24 mm) from outside through the door into the fuselage.
Who can find the two places? 🙂

Top right, along right edge and within the flange to the left?

Today I finished one of the last complex parts for the fuselage. The whippers. What do you think: how many individual parts does a windscreen wiper consist of? 🙂

You missed the wiper mechanism spring 😄

Joking, I have no idea how you manage to cut and drill such microparts.

Never before have I completed a tailrotor in this quality in such a short time! Thanks to Jam Screw!!!🙂🙂🙂 Compared to the original, all this is great: even the kink at the back edge of the blades is reproduced correctly.

These four pictures begin a project that should result in one of the largest models I have ever attempted. Not the biggest - the 1:32 Liberator holds my record here - but close!
However, the impressively large box contains surprisingly little and, also surprisingly, large components such as the fuselage, wings and tailplane are already assembled. Incidentally, these are made of fibreglass and require their own treatment.
These parts are also stable and clean. A bit of filling was required, as the traces of glue and filler on the seams are very rough and show air pockets. This will now be sanded, the cockpit sawn out and the windows drilled - well, modelling a little differently than usual! 🙂

The panel lines look ok I guess. I mean, I would be happy with those panel lines.
