After a health problem, I stopped modelling for a short time. I didn't want to continue the projects I had started because I wasn't in the mood for scratch modelling. I wanted to make a quick project - almost oob. Of course with a wooden propeller, because building one is just fun.
Working on two Pfalz D.IIIa (one as a triplane conversion) a long time ago was great fun and there was still a special kit waiting in my stash: a Limited Edition Dual Combo Pfalz D.III. No, I haven't forgotten the "a", this really is the forerunner of the D.IIIa. Eduard has re-released the D.IIIa kit often, but this Edition is from 2005 and was never released again. I hear some voices: Limited Editions are for collecting, not building. Never mind, I'm building the kit now!

I'm building the machine from the cover picture - and because there's a heart on it, I'm dedicating the build to my wife, who always supports me!

Excellent to see you Frank!! I can't wait to follow along with this. Which is sure to be another beautiful build. Any edition…Limited, or otherwise sounds like something to build to me!! But maybe I'm doing things wrong. Ha!!

Looks like an interesting project Frank. I must admit that I don't know much about WWI aircraft and your builds are often a lesson about the real machines as well as a lesson in modelling.

Thank you very much mates! Great to know that you are following 👍
Yeah Kyle, all kits can be build. But some collects rare kits as investment and hope to sell it later for higher prices. Once started the value goes near zero. But we have fun building them and that is invaluable!
@gorby You will see later that the Pfalz fighters are elegant planes!

Indeed. I take a great pleasure in opening up and building valuable kits. I would be a really horrible collector. Lol.

Good to see you back at the bench. I consider the Pfalz DIII one of the most elegant WWI planes and have two in my stash too. So I won't miss this build.
Keep it coming.

Kyle DeHart
The Pfalz really does have a lovely shape.
25 July, 23:19
Ludvík Kružík
I'm also glad you're back on the bench. I really enjoy watching you build models.

... by the way... I really like to buy Eduard limited edition models. They include lots of extras and often a publication with photos and information about the type whose model is in the box. I still have some of the limited edition models in my closet. Not because I just collect them, but because I haven't managed to build them yet. 🙂

Thank you very much mates! Your nice comments are highly appreciated!
I hope to show later new pictures showing the elegant lines even more.
@Ludvik Since this is an older kit in this case not a single word about the type! Only a ink jet printed manual, and one colorful, nicely printed sheet showing the six markings including decal placement. Anyway, the kit parts and PE are nice, a mask is also included.
@Bruce Ageing is not for cowards! But at least the fun is back with this project so I made also good progress.
26 July, 12:19

Now some colour comes into play! I drew some masks and had them cut by the plotter.

Happy you're back, but what the heck???
This is a speedbuild, never seen one made by you.
And it's going to be an elegant one 👍
26 July, 17:59
bughunter
Yes Christoph, that was exactly the reason why I selected this kit/project from my stash! Due to my two Eduard D.IIIa I was fully aware of the kit and I know what have to be done where. For the paint I used here Alclad and Mr.Paint so I could do all the masking and painting on one afternoon 🙂 MrPaint is the "modelling turbo"!
Even the rigging is not very complicated, no crosses inside the struts, and a single-bay biplane 👍

The speed with which you have progressed on this model is admirable. The paintwork turned out great and the different shades of silver depending on the material the paint was applied to look very good.

Beautiful progress!! You're marching your way right through this one!!
27 July, 00:48

That is a lovely machine with a lovely scheme as well. I really do need to do a few WWI subjects. Camo was in its infancy and making a reputation seemed more important at the time so what better way than to add a garish (some would say "striking") paint job? Though, I do NOT need to add more to the stash, I will be 100+ before I finish what I have. As you note, getting older is not fun, but it's preferable to the alternative! Good to see you back. 👍

27 July, 07:14
bughunter
Thanks to all for your wonderful feedback!

@Ludvik That is only one thin common layer of Semi Matt Alu. The underground shines through, like a preshading.

@John There are many very nice schemes available in my Pfalz references, especially in the "Pfalz D.IIIa at war" books (I have another D.IIIa Profipack in my shash). Regarding the second kit of this Dual Combo: The six Eduard markings are nice, but I will try to replicate a beautiful blue/red four-view profile painted by Ronny Bar in the Kagero book.
Regarding camo and colorful markings: The German printed fabric known as Lozenge had to task to avoid the detection of the aircraft type from far away (blur contours). The colorful markings were needed during dog fights with many fighters for quick detection of enemy, friends and leaders, as there were no radios yet (ok, some air-to-gound radios with morse code in two seaters; but no communication between fighters).

@J35J Then I hope the further steps will fulfill your expectations!
27 July, 11:33
Mr D
Nice ... very nice choice 👍👍👍 been considering one soon... Has it been a good kit ??
27 July, 12:07
bughunter
Oh yes, the Eduard Pfalz D.III series are great kits! There are small things which can be fixed and I mention them in my build reports. If you click on my Pfalz Collection you can see also my other builds of this kit.
The kit has also optional parts, e.g. for the D.IIIa two lower wings in different shapes. There was also a PE sheet for the IIIa with many more nice parts than on the little Profipack PE.
27 July, 12:55
Alec K
Taking a late seat. The subtle variation in aluminum color is excellent. I also like the painted-on insignia and markings 👍

New pictures are uploaded with the prepared undercarriage. At first I wanted to use the kit parts, but I checked my other Pfalz in the cabinet: the legs are very flexible. In this new case my legs had also a mould offset (that is something I hate on filigree plastic parts!) so for fix this it would made the legs more weak.
As many of my newer models has metal legs now I decided to do it here too. As other advantage they are finer and looks more scale.
27 July, 17:25
Ben M
Those offsets are so frustrating.

I was waiting to see how long your determination to build a model as an OOB would last. That's exactly how my builds are going. Every time I decide to build a model as an OOB, there is always some thing that needs to be adjusted. 😉
27 July, 20:19
Kyle DeHart
Outstanding work on that undercarriage. It looks wonderful
28 July, 08:23

Do you just wrap the stretched sprue around the struts of the suspension or do you soften it before by any means?
28 July, 09:23
bughunter
Another set of nice comments - thank you very much!
Michael, I have different colored sprues for such tasks. Some short run plastic do not work, but typically the Eduard ones and some others works nicely. They are very flexible if thin so I no not soften them. You just have to be careful not to create a snare when wrapping, because then the material can break. I secure it with CA.
28 July, 10:20
bughunter
The decals are applied. Only the wheels are not yet done, because I have to repaint them.
28 July, 10:53
Alec K
Superb work. For the legs (pic 32), do you first bend the brass tube and then squeeze it to shape?
28 July, 14:37
bughunter
Good question Alec! I squeezed at first and bend it after that, slowly and careful. I keep the brass between two plates and one leg in a vice to avoid that it moves outwards. See also pic 30.
Have not tried it, may be other way around works too?
28 July, 16:03

bughunter
Thank you very much! Good decision - it is a great kit! I need some fixes to be correct, e.g. the engine is a different 180hp Mercedes.
My D.III here is now a biplane. May be I can show some pics later.
1 August, 13:09
bughunter
Ok, today this build is running for exactly three weeks! I'm not yet finished, but many things are done already - including the rigging! Only two wires for control of the ailerons needs to be added. Also the airscrew and the spinner needs some attention.

Although this is a speed build by my standards, it remains incomprehensible to me how one is supposed to build such a model from an Eduard Weekend Edition in a weekend?
1 August, 20:38
Kyle DeHart
Yes gorgeous work, as usual. Looks like it is getting closer and a very quick build for you. I'm really liking it.

Good to see you, Alec. As you can guess, this is gonna be a big show. There's gonna be a lot of cutting, a lot of editing, and of course, I'll be scratching out new parts. At this point, I'm still planning the build process. But work on the model will soon be in full swing.

very intersting transformation. Following
4 June, 01:49
Ludvík Kružík
Welcome, Pierre, I'm very pleased to see your interest. I hope you find my rebuilding interesting.

The manufacturer of the Avia BH.9 model states 1/48 scale on the box. Actually the model is made in a slightly smaller scale 1/50. I don't mind that in this case. The Avia BH.10 is very similar to the Avia BH.9, but because it is a single-seat aircraft, it is smaller overall than the Avia BH.9. . So even if I build a single seat Avia BH.10 in 1/48 scale, I will be scaling down the fuselage and wing parts from the kit. I have been comparing the fuselage and wing parts to a 1/48 scale drawing of the Avia BH.10 and wondering how to scale the parts down to fit the desired shape and size.
4 June, 08:14

4 June, 19:35
Ludvík Kružík
Frank, you make a good point. The Avia BH.10 will add to my collection of Avia BH series monoplanes from the 1920s. They are very interesting and modern aircraft for their time, if only because biplanes dominated the skies at that time.
4 June, 22:19
Ludvík Kružík
I finished modifying the fuselage and wings to 1/48 scale.
6 June, 08:31
Ludvík Kružík
I started making new parts for the model.
6 June, 17:54
bughunter
Successful reshaping of kit parts 👍
Not very much left of the kit, but it looks like that way needs less work compared to a full scratch build.
6 June, 18:31
Ludvík Kružík
That's right. Due to the great similarity of the fuselage and wings of both Avia's, it is easier to modify these parts than to produce completely new ones. Still, there will be a lot of work involved in building the model.
At the moment I have the basic parts roughly ready. I still have to work on them. I will have to do some puttying and sanding. And then fill in all the details.
7 June, 10:33
Alec K
Nice progress. Watch, KP will release their 1/72 kit in 48 just as you finish… 😉 😄
7 June, 13:19
Ludvík Kružík
I'm not really worried about that. Even if it happens, I'm fine with it. Avia BH.10 in 1/72 scale is not very accurate. And if KP goes the route of enlarging parts of the 1/72nd scale model while making a 1/48th scale model (which I think is very likely), it will transfer all the errors of the original model to the new one. Plus, I really like these "crazy" rebuilds. It's a lot of fun for me. 😉
7 June, 14:23
Alec K
I fully agree, scratch builds and conversions are a lot of fun. I'll have to compare the KP kit to drawings before starting mine 👍
7 June, 19:51
Ludvík Kružík
Alec, before building a model you have to choose which machine you want to build. I'm building a first production run machine, but KP's 1/72 scale kit is a second production run machine. Otherwise there were machines with special modifications. And be careful which drawing you want to use. Some drawings are not very accurate (for example the drawing from Modeler 7/1986).
I have described the basic differences between the first and second production series machines in the attached photo.
9 June, 10:12
Alec K
Great, thank you! Do you have a drawing recommendation?
9 June, 15:11
Ludvík Kružík
Alec, you can find a lot of useful information about Avia BH.10 on Czech Modelforum in Pavel Kloucek's overviews.
Information about machines from the first production run can be found here: modelforum.cz/viewtopic.php?f=310&t=143236
And information about the machines of the second production series is here: modelforum.cz/viewtopic.php?f=310&t=143254
A lot of interesting information about the Avia aircraft designed by Benes and Hajn is in this book: nasevojsko.eu/nasevo..onstrukce-Benes-Hajn

I sent you a PM about the drawings.
9 June, 17:11
Alec K
Super, thank you very much.
10 June, 14:39
Ludvík Kružík
I am continuing to build the model by making a new cockpit.
12 June, 22:28
Ludvík Kružík
Unfortunately I only have one period photo of the cockpit, which shows the instrument panel and the right side of the cockpit.
I'm working from the drawing to create the controls and instruments on the left side of the cockpit and floor, with the help of photos of the Avie BH.11 cockpit.
Since the Avie BH.9, 10 and 11 have the same engine and very similar construction, I think most of the cockpit controls were designed very similarly, if not identically.
14 June, 21:52

15 June, 22:09

Your prop effort beats mine. I tried with sandwitched colored paper infused with resin but needed a painted color overlay. I need to try with correct colored card stock next time.
16 June, 01:20
Ludvík Kružík
Making a propeller out of coloured cardboard was an experiment for me. I wondered if it would work.
16 June, 23:43
Ludvík Kružík
I finished making the cockpit. Now I'm going to glue the bottom of the fuselage and then putty and sand the fuselage.
16 June, 23:54
Ludvík Kružík
It was time to puttying and sanding. We'll see how many times I have to repeat this cycle.
19 June, 21:47
Villiers de Vos

20 June, 05:29

I will buy shares of putty manufacturers. 😉
20 June, 08:04
Ludvík Kružík
Villiers, welcome! Good to see you again.

This aeroplane is very simple and there are very few small details on it. But the few that are on it, I'll be sure to pay attention to. 😉

Bughunter,
maybe your plan to buy shares in the putty maker will pay off. At least in my case the putty maker made a profit 😄.

I know the fuselage doesn't look good with a heavy coat of putty. But the hull needed that layer of putty on the bow. I had to fill in all the joints and minor unevenness. There won't be much putty left on the hull after sanding, but since the putty shrinks as it dries, it's hard to tell ahead of time where more putty is needed and where maybe not. In this case, more is better.
20 June, 10:15
Ludvík Kružík
The fuselage, wings and tail surfaces are ready for minor detailing. In the end I just needed one rough puttying, sanding, spraying surfacer, one fine puttying of minor defects, sanding again and final surfacer.

22 June, 16:40
Ludvík Kružík
After a short vacation I returned to building the Avia. I haven't had much time to build it yet.

I taped the tail surfaces with masking tape so I could spray thin strips of surfacer on the ribs.
To indicate the slight sagging of the canvas on the wing surfaces that were only covered with canvas, I started scraping these surfaces very gently with a round-bladed scalpel. Once I had completed this operation on both wings, it was my turn to cover them with masking tape so that I could spray strips of surfacer on the wing ribs.

I'll add photos of the work in progress next time.

I started adding details to the fuselage, wings and tail surfaces.

Ludvík Kružík
I'm slowly resuming my work. I've sprayed the rib bands on the wings and added some minor detailing to the left side of the fuselage.
3 July, 22:32

The top and side surfaces of the Avia are sprayed with the first of three camouflage colours.

Ludvík Kružík
Moreno Baruffini, thank you, I appreciate it.

Alec, when this Avia is finished, it will complete my collection of Avia BH-3, Avia BH-9 and Avia BH-11 monoplanes from Benes and Hajn constructors.
9 July, 22:23
Villiers de Vos
Still nailed to my chair.
10 July, 01:41
Ludvík Kružík
Villiers thank you for your interest.

Due to the summer season and its associated activities and the occasional babysitting of my 15 month old grandson, I have less time to build the model. Progress will be slower.
10 July, 07:36
Ludvík Kružík
The upper surfaces of the Avia are already covered with tri-colour camouflage. There was no time to spraying silver paint on the lower surfaces today. At least I know what I will do next time 😄.
12 July, 23:35
Villiers de Vos
Coming together nicely.
13 July, 04:54

The colors look great 👍
13 July, 18:13

The colours bring it to life!
And no worry about slower progress - family and life is very important.
14 July, 18:42
Moreno Baruffini
I totally agree with Bughunter!

Ludvík Kružík
@ Villiers and Alec
Thank you for your support, it is very much appreciated.

@ bughunter and Moreno
You are right, family is important and has a higher priority than building models. Don't worry, I'm clear on this point. 😉
17 July, 21:31
Ludvík Kružík
Today I had time and also the daytime temperatures dropped to a bearable limit so I took advantage of it and moved the construction a little bit again.
17 July, 23:10
Ludvík Kružík
I continue building the model by making parts for the landing gear, propeller and wings. I also printed the decals with the serial numbers.
20 July, 00:06
Villiers de Vos
Fantastic skills.

Presumably, you're approaching the finish line, Ludviku 🙂
20 July, 06:27
Ludvík Kružík
Mates, thank you!

Robert, it's true. Once I finish the individual assemblies, the model building and completion of the model will move forward quickly. 🙂

Nice details on the undercarriage - the kit seem to be short run.

This model seems to be workable ^_^
20 July, 12:17
Ludvík Kružík
@ Bughunter,
you're not far from the truth. During the building of my Avia BH - 9 and Avia BH - 11 kits, I received quite a lot of inquiries from Czech modellers asking if I was thinking about releasing the kit in a short run.
Unfortunately I don't have the equipment or experience to produce these kits. That is why I am sticking with my rebuilds and builds from scratch. But they say "never say never". So who knows, maybe someday... 😉

@ Guy Rump, Curatorm
Thanks for the kind words, it's a great inspiration for me to continue working on this project 🙂.

Skyhiker
Your hard work is paying off. Looking forward to seeing it all come together.
20 July, 14:54
Ludvík Kružík
Skyhiker, thank you for your contribution.
And I can at least partially satisfy your curiosity. I've attached the wings with struts and horizontal tail surfaces to the fuselage.
23 July, 21:47
Alec K
… and it has wings! Looking awesome 👍
24 July, 13:22
Villiers de Vos
Very nice progress.
24 July, 17:59
Ludvík Kružík
Summer weather and holidays are not very good for modelling, but I have noticed some progress. I am gradually making small parts. Most of them are in the semi-finished stage.
1 August, 09:12
Ludvík Kružík
Tomorrow (if nothing goes wrong) I will spray the Avia with glossy clear coat. Then all that's left to do is add the last few parts and indicate a bit of operational wear... and we'll be done. If there are no complications, it could be done in three days.

I spent a couple of hours cleaning up some parts that I cut of the frame
22 June, 18:33
Bozzer
These curbside chassis, really upset me. Just like the Volvo VN. If the manufacturer, went to the trouble, of making an engine, and separate frame parts, with other kits, then why would they cheap out, on kits like these? I love what you're doing with this though. Keep the pictures coming, buddy 👍
22 June, 19:35
Martin Oostrom
I didn't put up pictures of all the cutting and sanding. A summary:
All parts are cut, sanded and glued where possible. Only a few drops of filler were needed.
The cab consists of 10 parts that need to be positioned just right. **** job, but I think I managed.
Next up: Primer.
18 July, 09:20
Martin Oostrom
And primer is on after a monster session. 200ml primer + 50ml SLT = just enough.
Primer is zero paints grey. But a dirty grey.

Tamiya Bright Red for the chassis and Zero stone grey as main colour for the interior
19 July, 13:51
Martin Oostrom
The Zero stone grey was a bit depressing, so I mixed a batch 50/50 with white to lighten things up a bit.
Tamiya aluminium was airbrushed, and Tamiya black as well.
Done with airbrushing for now. Letting the paint cure before decalling.

Bravo mate!
Are those bolt heads, part of the kit?
20 July, 19:52

Thanks lads. The bolt heads are kit parts. Just moulded on.
20 July, 20:58
Bozzer
That's pretty good moulding. I thought they were PE mate.
I'll get some pictures up myself, tomorrow, of what I've been up to?
It's been a rollercoaster, that's for sure!

Great progress with the DAF

I do hope Revell will re-release all of its classic and colorful kits like this one. It will looks amazing with all the decals.
30 July, 07:16
Martin Oostrom
Started with the decals. They're a bit older and fragile. Should have read the instructions better. Would have made life a bit easier now.
I don't know what Revell were thinking, but some of the curves are too steep for these decals. It takes a lot of softener, a hairdryer and a boatload of patience to get them right. Even then they tore in places. And I've only done 5 pieces.
30 July, 17:09
Bozzer
Sorry to hear about your bad experience mate.
However, it's definitely made a difference, and I know, that it looks bloody fantastic!
This is why I'm not a big fan of decals. It's the worst part of any build, for me. Hence why I push myself, with my airbrushing? But, I have to be in the correct mood, in the correct conditions.
The decals on my Turnpiker, were terrible. The amount of decals softener that I used, started to affect the clear coat. Next time, I'm going to airbrush everything, and then put them both together, so you guys can give me your honest verdict.
But to try and airbrush those beautiful decals, that you have there, would take me years!
Do you think, you would have been better trying to copy them on your own decal paper, and trying it that way?
30 July, 17:51
bughunter
What I hate most about working with decals is the fact that there are no spare ones (at least for older, no more available kits).
So I wish you a huge amount of patience and luck! Take care, it will look great 👍
30 July, 18:02
Martin Oostrom
The overall quality of the decals is well enough. Thin, almost no decal film on the edges. It's just that on the rear of the cab, the trenches are so deep. Luckily this is the only part that has this. The roof has some extending bits, but there are seperate decals for those.
My life would have been a bit easier if I'd read the instructions more carefully. Revell wants you to decal some pieces, before glueing. That way all edges are nicely covered. I'm an advanced modeler, so I just did my thing...

The artwork on this one is a bit too complicated to airbrush, it would take me more than a few years.
It might take some time, but I'll finish this job in the end 😄
30 July, 18:10

If nothing else works read the F$!%ing Manual !🤣🤣🤣
30 July, 18:38
Goldman
Before starting to use a complex or questionable decal sheet I take a high resolution photo of it with my phone (an old school flat-bed scanner will be even better). My reasoning is that if I mess the decals I would be able to print a new sheet somehow. Luckily never had to actually test this theory so far...
30 July, 19:07
Martin Oostrom
RTFM is overrated.
Good idea Goldman. Should give that a go on future builds.
31 July, 19:01

Decals on the cab are done. Helluva job
3 August, 08:43
Bozzer
Cracking job, on that cab, mate!
I'm glad you opened up the grill, it makes a hell of a difference!
Take your time with this now, because it'd be a shame if something went wrong, at the final fence?
This was always destined to be an epic build. I can't wait to see it married upto the trailer
