Ok, this looks challenging.

Any thoughts on how much nose weight is going to be required?!?

David Culp
How. That's quite a project. I'm getting worn out just by looking at the photos 🙂

I have spent four hours today just cleaning parts and drilling holes so it's almost a kit now. Next I have to drill for steel rod that will run inside the length of the wings to prevent them from sagging over time.

This is where it gets interesting. Otherwise I know how much weight the nose will need. Very much!

Ambitious! Let me take a seat!

Some serious modelling going on here. May I suggest - for a future project - to fill the windows like in your project with clear resin? I cover the outside with regular Sella Tape and just pour the resin in. The result are windows that are beautifully flush with the fuselage, can be sanded and polished.

Desert Marlin
Excellent idea for the windows! Alas, I added them about 17 years ago...

Desert Marlin
The Flight Engineer panel for the C-Model is against the side of the fuselage and not across the deck behind the co-pilot. No details added as it's not visible outside the main canopy. Colors are all that is really perceptible though the vacuform...

My dad was a flight mechanic on these at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA in the late 60's and early 70's. He was in the 314th Troop Carrier Squadron.

Using CA glue with "Zip Kicker" to speed up the filling/drying process. Also have some Bondo Resin on hand just in case.

Joining the party.
That fuselage fit issue looks familiar (though not this size of course) - I used to heat the fuselage halves in boiling water and press/tape them to sth straight so they get the correct shape).
My guess is they are warped while being taken out of the mold.

Nose Weight: 130 grams estimated.

I may use CA and "Bondo" to hold the fuselage together... If I boil the two halves, I am a little concerned about what it would do to the round window inserts...

Great looking so far, Mark! I used to fly out of McClellan from 2005-2007, and there were a lot of huge hangars there.

Gordon, my dad was a flight mechanic. Charlie Lawrence. Glad to hear from you. I worked in the phase dock on the KC-135E aircraft. The 940th/314th AREFG was an awesome place to work. I left in 1992.
24 August 2023, 03:13
Desert Marlin
The belly of the aircraft is definately going to require a little Bondo...

Best of luck, this is some serious modeling you're attempting here!

I like what I see. The kit challenges, but you will prevail. 🙂

A very cool and unusual airplane. Following.

What a work ! Sadly, Anigrand did not improve with resin bubbles ! My XB-42 was full of them and it took a lot of time to get them rid off. And the kit is so heavy with the huge lead i had to put in to compensate the rear propeller that i let it scarcely on its landing gear alone, in public exhibitions only... But it is so beautiful !! Thanks to Anigrand to provide those strange things, but they are really time consumers to grow out of their box ! 🙂 Good luck with this beast !

A true heavy weight category, isn't it? 😉
24 August 2023, 09:51

The bubbles will be overcome!!!

It was a painful process to fuse the fuselage halves, to say the least.

Structure is built. I need to finish working the wing root seams down...
29 August 2023, 04:54

Time to finish sanding and add the canopy. The canopy will be a bit of a challenge as I have to add support rails to the interior of the structure so that the Evergreen Canopy Glue will have sufficient surface to grab onto and hold the canopy. Then seal it from the outside with CA glue. My goal is to make the mating seam completely disappear when painted…
2 September 2023, 17:36
Desert Marlin
Time to prime and seal. The Alclad black microfilmer and sanding sealer seems to be a good place to finish the priming step. Will use the Tamiya surface primer first.

Hi Mark, I'm enjoying someone else doing a Anigrand kit which I don't mind doing (though I only do their 1/144 models). They aren't perfect but their subject matter is worth the work I think. BTW I thought contra-rotating propellers for port and starboard are common on multi engine planes.

Łukasz Gliński
I'm impressed with the canopy look, always struggling to flush the vacu ones into the fuselage
4 September 2023, 08:07
Desert Marlin
Thanks Carlo. It's a challenge, for sure, but I am up to it! The video of the C-124C startup appears to all be counter clockwise rotation on all four engines. I dunno. I was not a "recip" mechanic. I only worked on jets.
5 September 2023, 05:16
Desert Marlin
Thank you Łukasz. The canopy is a work in progress until the final seal coat goes on.

My nose weight calculation turned out to be very realistic. It can still sit on its tail, but also sets on its nose properly. I think I need to make an A-Frame tail brace and hang it from the tail skid...

Impressive beast !
CA is a good filler, you're right : one can improve this quality by sprinkling talc before the gue has dried. It is rather easy to sand, and useful to fill big gaps like those you met between the wings and the fuselage.

Great job. Nice finish. The idea of a steel rod is something I'd not considered. The amount of weight required is impressive and your calculations seem spot on. Fortunately you had the space in the nose for that amount of weight. Thanks for sharing.

So cool, this thing looks huge. Excited to see how it finishes.

Such small wings for such a fat fuselage!!! How did this thing fly?

Great work Mark!

I am down to checking the markings for silvering, adding the gloss and dull coats and then removing the window masks!!!

I do need the "DANGER -> PROPELLER <- DANGER" marking. I will have to come up with that somewhere...

I'm told that Hobby Lobby carries decal paper, but you'll need a color printer and decal coat; best of luck. Also, what is the wingspan of the finished kit?

I built this for my dad. He was a flight mechanic on the C-124 with the 940th MAG. He passed in 2019. This Thursday would have been his 89th birthday. Miss you dad!!!
