Started with the cockpit bits of course. I am very impressed, but not surprised, with how everything fits and the level of detail.

I love LP11 as a base for chipping and pretty much any bare metal on small parts (whole airframe is another matter). It just looks great chipped and holds plastic almost as well as a primer.

I'm a big fan of hairspray chipping. It's a pain but IMO it achieves results you can't get with a silver pencil or the sponge method.

Tamiya's IP decal worked pretty well. The usual thick carrier film, but hit it with a flat coat and then come back with some gloss for the instrument faces, it should be fine.

Adding bits and wires to the BMW-003. Still need to do washes, highlights, etc. Added a touch of chipping to the main engine case and the stand.

Portside engine. Not going 100% accurate or doing every single piece of plumbing, but just making it look a little more busy than Tamiya did.

Starboard view again. Really needs some washes to make the details stand out and tone down the primary colors of the plumbing a bit. Oh and of course it still needs the intake cowling,

Top view. Plan to add a little heat staining to the jetpipe downstream of the combustors. You don't see heat staining on museum engines, probably because they were never run. Nor do you see much chipping for the same reason but I'd like to show a little wear and tear.

Piping on the engine is taking longer than the actual construction. Yes, chipping on this bird too, just not on the wooden wings or tailplane!

No, this isn't the late-war Luftwaffe "giraffe" camo scheme. Just a little color variation on areas that were wood. Obviously this looks nothing like real wood grain, just trying to get a hint through the upcoming overcoat. We'll see how it goes.

I know the wings, tailplane and nosecone were made of wood, but not sure how much of the rear fuselage was wood, or not. So I'll avoid chipping in that area just in case.

These aircraft weren't in service long enough (even those that didn't come apart in flight) so chipping isn't really realistic, I just want a bit in there to give it some flavor so to speak.

Would have left the landing gear off until after painting but there isn't really a good way to attach it once the fuselage goes together, leading to some interesting masking challenges. Fortunately, the spare set of landing gear doors Tamiya provides are very helpful for this. A cut down straw and some foam takes care of the rest. Still that annoying ghost seam needs some attention.

Almost finished, just a few more details to add/complete: pitot tube, cannons, gunsight and paint the DF loop antenna on the engine pod.

The ever-thick Tamiya decals show their film a little bit on the grey, but otherwise not too badly behaved.

Front gear door and retraction mechanism to add as well. Painting the main door retraction struts also, had to replace the fragile plastic rods with some brass.

Tamiya's canopy fits perfectly. I appreciate the effort they put into that as nothing can cause a build make you pull out your hair than a bad fitting canopy because it draws the eye.

Thanks Mr D. You can't go wrong with a Tamiya, at least in terms of fit. Sometimes their details get simplified and supposedly a few kits have accuracy issues, but for assembly they are great. Had to do this one after the A-20G since it was so painfully fussy to fit together. This is a nice change!

I thought about punching out each instrument individually but it's so small it would have driven me mad. Fortunately, the decal is sized perfectly to the panel so if you align it carefully, it turns out fine.

This kit doesn't specifically say it, but you can do both open and closed engine panel. Since the engine fits with pins and poly caps, you can change them out, which I intend to do. It's a nice touch and the kit is fairly cheap. Pick one up if you haven't already.

I agree,after a frustrating build. You can go to a Tamiya kit and get back to what the hobby is about. . . Enjoyment, satisfaction, reasonable accuracy and a decent finish. Good interior John, looks like the 162 is on track as I would expect from your good self. 🤘🥸🤟🥸👍
